Hurricanes Fans Voice Displeasures At Embarrassing Game 2 Loss
The Carolina Hurricanes have a loyal and dedicated fanbase that generally loves and supports them through thick and thin, but even the 'Caniacs' have their limits. Game 2 was that limit. After a terrible opening frame, that saw the Hurricanes with as many shots on goal as goals against (3), the fanbase let them have it. Boos are raining down in Carolina after the Panthers finished the period up 3 👀 — B/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) May 23, 2025 The boos came hot and heavy heading into the first intermission and it wasn't the last time they came out either as the fans kept it up throughout the game and especially toward the end. It was one of the most embarrassing losses in franchise history, a 5-0 drumming at home by the Florida Panthers after having already lost the series opener. The Canes knew they needed to be better, but they folded as quickly as they possibly could. And not only were there the boos, but the fans also started a "Shoot the puck!" chant on multiple occasions that echoed throughout Lenovo Center. Never heard a 'shoot the puck' chant before but we like it — The Hockey News (@TheHockeyNews) May 23, 2025 And they were justified in that chant too. "What did we have, seven shots at that point?," said captain Jordan Staal on the chant. "So I don't blame them. It's been a staple of our team for so long. We did give up a few good opportunities to shoot and passed up on a couple plays that were not bad plays, but the way the puck's been bouncing and stuff, it looked ugly. Our M.O. has always been to shoot first, ask questions later and we weren't doing that tonight. We didn't create enough chances or really anything." Thursday night's game featured the lowest amount of shots on goal from the Hurricanes (17) since the start of the Rod Brind'Amour era (2018-19). In fact, it was just the 10th time ever under Brind'Amour, regular season or playoffs, that the team has had fewer than 20 shots on goal. The Hurricanes are struggling something mighty right now after having a relative cakewalk to the Eastern Conference final with two straight five-game series against the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals. They head to Florida now as they look to change their fortunes and avoid yet another Eastern Conference final sweep. Jalen Chatfield, Scott Morrow or Alexander Nikishin?: Carolina's Blueline Still Up In The Air Before Game 2
Who will be on the blueline tonight for the Carolina Hurricanes? That's the million dollar question right now as the team prepares for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Final series against the Florida Panthers. The Hurricanes have been missing the services of veteran defenseman Jalen Chatfield, who's been a top-four staple for the Canes all year. Chatfield was injured in the team's last series against the Washington Capitals and has since missed Carolina's last two games. The defender was practicing this morning and is nearing a return, but his status is still up in the air for tonight. In his place, the Hurricanes have alternated between a duo of rookie defensemen: Alexander Nikishin and Scott Morrow. The issue is that neither player has really distinguished himself. "Those are our two options if Chatty can't go," said Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour Thursday morning. "I think for both, it's a tough spot to put them in. Rookies who haven't had a lot of NHL experience. One guy that doesn't understand English that well. It's just not ideal for this time of year. I think those two are our best options and if Chatty can't go, it will be one of them. Scotty, I think he understands our game better because he's been playing it for a year and the flow of playing one game and coming right back to another game I think is a consideration. Those are all things we'll have to figure out if Chatty is unavailable." Nikishin played in Game 5 against the Capitals and had two egregious turnovers in the early goings of the game (one of which ended up in a goal although it was ultimately called back for offsides) and only played a little more than 10 minutes. Morrow played in Game 1 against the Panthers and was a -3 in 12:18 of ice time. At this point, we're really splitting hairs over who's the better option because the truth of the matter is that neither seems ready for the moment. The Canes really just need Chatfield to play. Alexander Nikishin To Make NHL Debut
Image Highly touted prospect Alexander Nikishin is set to make his NHL debut tonight for the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 against the Washington Capitals. Defenseman Jalen Chatfield will miss tonight's game due to a lower-body injury. Advertisement Nikishin, 23, had long been considered one of the best prospects outside of the NHL, setting records and dominating the KHL. The defenseman will have the chance to prove himself in a high-pressure situation as the Canes look to close out their second-round series in Washington. The 2020 third-round pick is a towering figure and has all the tools to be successful. Being paired alongside Dmitry Orlov should also help given the language barrier. Let's see what the rookie's got. Be sure to check out the Carolina Hurricanes 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs Hub for all postseason stories! Frederik Andersen Exits Game 4 With Apparent Injury
Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen has exited Game 4 against the New Jersey Devils in the second period after absorbing a big blow in his crease. Less than five minutes into the second period, Timo Meier, who was engaged with Andrei Svechnikov, collided with Andersen as he drove to the net. The 220lb power forward made contact with Andersen up high and the Danish netminder collapsed back into the net. He was able to skate off the ice under his own power. The officials called a major on the ice to review the play, but determined after that there was no penalty, probably due to the contact from Svechnikov. However, it's tough to say that Meier did all he could to stop his momentum, as while Svechnikov did make contact with Meier, the contact didn't seem enough to be enough to force the Devils forward to hit Andersen. It seems almost like Meier's weight comes from his back, up into goalie. Pyotr Kochetkov is entering the game in goal for Carolina after Frederik Andersen was injured in this collision with Timo Meier#RaiseUp | #NJDevils — Hockey Daily 365 l NHL Highlights & News (@HockeyDaily365) April 27, 2025 Regardless, it will now be Pyotr Kochetkov's net for the foreseeable future as Andersen was ruled out for the remainder of the game. The Russian netminder played the majority of Carolina's games this year and while he was hot for stretches, he finished the year on a not-so-great run.
