Would-be church attacker arrested upon release from medical facility, Texas cops say

A man who last November told North Texas police he planned to attack a church has been arrested and faces numerous charges, authorities said Thursday. Tino Napoleon Ross, 33, was detained after police in White Settlement found improvised explosives, guns and ammunition in his van during a traffic stop last fall, the Star-Telegram reported at the time. Ross was arrested Wednesday after he was released from a medical facility in Wichita Falls, police said in a news release. He has been charged with possession of prohibited weapons, unlawfully carrying weapons, and resisting arrest, search or transportation, police said. Investigators believe Ross planned to attack a relative's home in White Settlement and that he was researching other locations, including places of worship, to attack, according to the statement. Officials with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms conducted a search at Ross' home in Oklahoma and seized materials that were used to build the explosive devices, police said. The ATF is evaluating the case for federal review that could result in additional charges, according to the statement. The FBI Dallas Joint Terrorism Task Force also helped with the investigation and interviewed the suspect. White Settlement police initially responded to the 9200 block of Jason Lane at about 5:30 a.m. on Nov. 26, 2024, after receiving a call from a neighbor about a suspicious vehicle, the Star-Telegram previously reported. When police arrived, they found Ross experiencing a mental health crisis. He had a handgun in his lap, officials said at the time. A search of the van revealed the IEDs and other weapons including a rifle and an AR-style pistol, police said. Ross is being held in Wichita Falls and will eventually be transported to the Tarrant County Jail. White Settlement police will hold a news conference on Friday to release video and more details from the investigation.

The owner of a Fort Worth burger restaurant is recovering after he was assaulted inside his business, according to a statement from his family. Carlos Rodriguez was attacked at the Fuego Burger restaurant, at 4400 Benbrook Highway in west Fort Worth, on May 13, according to a police report. Rodriguez will be away from the restaurant for two to three months until his doctors give him the all-clear to return to work, his family said in a statement shared on social media. Rodriguez' wife, Christie, and their son will keep the restaurant running in his absence, they said. 'While we may not be operating at our usual pace, please know every meal is still prepared with love and dedication,' the family's statement says. Nehemiah Green, 24, of DeSoto, has been arrested and faces a charge of assault causing bodily injury in the case, according to the police report. Fuego Burger was a finalist in a past Star-Telegram 'Burger Battle' contest for its signature sandwich, a green chile cheeseburger with crispy cheddar jack cheese. Fort Worth police did not immediately provide more details about the incident Wednesday afternoon.

Kennedale ISD substitute accused of showing sexual material to students, police say

A Kennedale ISD substitute teacher has been arrested after parents say she showed sexually explicit material to their children. The substitute teacher, identified in court records as 38-year-old Ashley Nicole Evans, was booked at the Tarrant County Jail and released on $50,000 bond on Wednesday. Evans faces two misdemeanor counts of displaying harmful material to a minor, according to court records. According to a search warrant affidavit obtained by the Star-Telegram, multiple students at Kennedale Junior High School reported to school administrators that Evans had talked to them about drug use and pornography and showed them sexually explicit material on her cellphone. Parents Daphne Todd and Ashley Baker told WFAA-TV that they were notified of the April incident via an e-mail from school officials and a phone call from police this week. Baker's 14-year-old daughter and Todd's 14-year-old son were both in the junior high school class that Evans was teaching at the time, the mothers said. 🚨 More top stories from our newsroom: → School closures could save millions. Court records indicate that a second alleged incident took place in January. 'I'm disturbed because you have to be mentally ill and a very perverted, sick person to be in a classroom full of pre-teens, like teens, and be watching that kind of stuff,' Baker told WFAA-TV. Kennedale ISD issued the following statement to the Star-Telegram: In April, the district received a report regarding inappropriate conversations between a substitute teacher and students. In accordance with district policy, the substitute was immediately removed from access to all campuses and law enforcement was notified. Since that time, additional allegations have been made as part of the ongoing investigation with law enforcement. The District is actively cooperating with appropriate agencies. We remain committed to the safety and well-being of all students and will continue to take appropriate action in accordance with district policy and legal requirements. Kennedale police declined to release additional details, citing the ongoing investigation.

‘Really brutal': Azle teen recovering from roadside assault by ex, family says

A North Texas family is seeking justice after a police investigation found that a teenage girl was assaulted by her ex-boyfriend, who is accused of hitting her, choking her and throwing her out of a moving car. The ex-boyfriend, who is a juvenile, has been arrested and the investigation is continuing to determine whether anyone else will face charges in the case, Reno police said in a news release. The 16-year-old girl, identified by her family as Lily, left her home about 11:30 p.m. May 3 and got into a car with a group of friends, her aunt Rachel Brown told the Star-Telegram. The group then drove Lily to a remote location on Jay Bird Lane in Parker County and stopped the car, saying there was something wrong with the vehicle, according to the family. At that point, Lily's ex-boyfriend opened the car door, dragged her out and began to beat and choke her while others recorded video of the assault, Brown said. The boy was the father of a baby Lily had miscarried three weeks prior, Brown said. At the time of the assault, the girl was recovering from a procedure to help her complete the miscarriage, she said. In the video of the attack, the boy is seen focusing hits and punches on her abdomen, Brown said. 'It was really brutal and intentional,' Brown said. The ex-boyfriend also took Lily's phone and money before getting back into the car, her aunt said. Lily then tried to retrieve her belongings from the car and the assault continued, Brown said. The car began to drive away, and the ex-boyfriend pushed her out of the moving vehicle, she said. 🚨 More top stories from our newsroom: → School closures could save millions. But would they help students? → Student charged in Frisco stabbing will receive diploma → Last TCU-area dive bar is a restaurant with surprises [Get our breaking news alerts.] A passing motorist saw Lily on the side of the road and allowed her to use his phone to call her family before driving her to the Azle Police Department, her aunt said. She spent a few days in the hospital being treated for internal injuries and road rash that came from being pushed out of the car, her family said. Reno police said their officers responded to the Azle Police Department to interview the victim and she was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The ex-boyfriend was arrested May 6, according to the statement from Reno police. His name has not been released because he is a juvenile. Police said he is charged with robbery, family violence assault by impeding breath, and family violence aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. Family violence charges include dating relationships under Texas law, police said. No other arrests have been made, Rachel Brown said. 'The four other people in the car have faced no repercussions,' Brown said on Wednesday, May 14. 'We're told by law enforcement that things are happening, but we're 11 days out and they haven't faced any repercussions.' Brown believes the other teens in the car were part of planning the assault. 'They planned it out, to take her out there and set her up,' she said. Since being released from the hospital, Lily is 'extremely jumpy,' has been experiencing anxiety and can't sleep, Brown said. 'It just seems to be, in the younger generation, that violence is kind of cool,' Brown said. 'We as a family think it's important to show that it's not.'

Sexual assault on American Airlines flight result of ‘culture of indifference,' lawyers say

The sexual assault of a woman onboard an American Airlines flight was the result of indifference and profit-driven policies at the airline, the woman and her lawyers told reporters on Wednesday. The woman, Barbara Morgan, filed a lawsuit against the Fort Worth-based airline in federal court in California on April 24. Morgan reported that she was assaulted by the man sitting next to her on a 2024 flight from San Francisco to Dallas, the Star-Telegram previously reported. Morgan was traveling with her husband to visit their son, who had recently completed military service and graduated from Harvard University, she said during a online press conference Wednesday. The airline assigned Morgan a seat separate from her husband and told her she would have to pay extra to be seated next to him, according to the lawsuit. If Morgan had been allowed to sit next to her husband without an extra charge, the assault never would have occurred, her lawyers said. When the man started groping her Morgan said, she froze in fear and was afraid of reporting it immediately because of the possibility of retribution from the man, Cherian Abraham, or from other passengers if the plane had been diverted as a result. Morgan's lawyers also allege that American Airlines was negligent when it allowed Abraham to fly with the airline, according to the lawsuit. Abraham had been previously reported to American Airlines for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman onboard a flight in 2023, Morgan's attorneys said in a statement. Abraham, 55, also is named as a defendant in the lawsuit. Representatives for American Airlines and a lawyer for Abraham did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'When [Morgan] reported her assault, American Airlines both failed to respond and completely disregarded her,' Daisy Ayllon, a lawyer for Morgan, said. 'This lawsuit seeks to hold both the individual and the airline accountable, and to send a message to other survivors: your voices matter, your safety matters and you deserve to be treated with dignity when you fly.' Abraham has been indicted on a federal charge of abusive sexual contact after authorities said he groped a 22-year-old woman onboard another American Airlines flight in a separate incident earlier this year, the Star-Telegram previously reported. 🚨 More top stories from our newsroom: → Texas, Fort Worth officials warn of dire impacts of Head Start cuts → 2 arrested in North Texas triple homicide. 3rd man exonerated → Woman assaulted on American Airlines flight files federal suit [Get our breaking news alerts.]
