REAL I.D. enforcement at the Columbus Airport
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) says they have not experienced many issues in the first week of enforcement. However, they do expect to see a spike very soon. Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson says the lack of issues is due to many Georgia residents already having a compliant I.D. . The Georgia Department of Drivers Services says licenses issued after 2012 are Real I.D. compliant. 'It's just a handful of folks that maybe are just moving to Georgia and haven't gotten their I.D's yet,' Howell says. Due to the size of the Columbus Airport, if someone's I.D. is not Real I.D. complaint it is communicated to that individual. This differs from bigger airports as those without a complaint identification will receive a red card with a QR code that shares all acceptable forms of I.D. No matter the size of the airport, Howell says once someone has been identified as non-compliant, they are then separated and subject to additional screenings. 'We've been recommending those folks that don't have their real I.D. or one of the other accepted forms to get to the airport a bit earlier than our usual two hours ahead of their departure time,' Howell shares. TSA says they expect to see an increase in delay time and those without a Real I.D. or other acceptable form of identification. 'The potential for that to happen grows when you have additional volume and a lot more additional infrequent travelers planned over the Memorial Day Weekend and those other holiday weekends in the Summer,' Howell explains. He recommends getting the Real I.D. sooner than later. 'The whole purpose behind it is really to raise security and it goes right in line with everything else we're doing at security checkpoints,' Howell says. 'We want to make sure the person that's presenting that I.D. is who they're supposed to be and that they're getting screened at the most state of the art technology that we've got available at security checkpoints.' What happens if you don't have a Star ID and need to fly
HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) — The much-anticipated May 7 deadline is now here for flyers. 'Today is the beginning of enforcement to have a Real ID or an Alabama Star ID to enter the TSA checkpoint and catch a flight at our airport and across the country,' said Mary Swanstrom. Cullman County DA says 58 Hanceville PD cases deemed 'unprosecutable' by grand jury Swamstrom is Huntsville International Airport's public relations manager. Many have lined up outside of DMVs across the country for weeks to get the Star ID before the deadline, but what does traveling look like for those fliers who don't have it? 'When TSA opened this morning, they did have separate lines for those who would have been Real ID compliant and then those who would not, because if you were not carrying a Real ID compliant ID or a Star ID, then you can expect extra screening,' said Swanstrom. TSA is recommending passengers without a proper ID come to the airport three hours early so they don't miss their flight. Huntsville woman found guilty of murder in social-media fueled 2019 shooting Ro Patel flew from Houston to Huntsville this morning, she described long lines and many people getting turned away without the right ID. 'They had to go over there and fill out some kind of paperwork or something, and I could see the frustration on their face because they weren't prepared for the day,' said Patel. Because she flew out on the start date of enforcement, she said United Airlines sent her a courtesy text, reminding her to bring her Star ID or passport. 'It said, make sure you have a Star on your identification,' she said. 'Today is the day that it starts. It was a long text saying, 'Hey, go to this website, make sure your ID looks like this.'' While TSA is offering the grace period of just extra screening, airport officials say they do not know how long it will last, so you should get your Star ID as soon as you can. Airport officials say they had nearly 1500 passengers flying out Wednesday morning, and only 38 did not have a Star ID or a proper form of ID. You can find proper forms of ID on the TSA website. Real ID enforcement at Birmingham Airport considered a success
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Transportation Security Administration's 'Real ID' enforcement started Wednesday. From this day forward, if you're heading to the airport, you need to you have your Star ID, U.S. passport or military ID. So far, the TSA, which organized the operation, is pleased with the public's response. 'Real ID initiative is moving along wonderfully, no issues with any wait time, and truly Alabama has definitely hit it out of the park,' said Tara Corse, who is the Federal Security Director for the TSA in the state of Alabama. Gov. Kay Ivey signs bill that largely wrestles control of the Birmingham Water Works Board out of the city's hands CBS 42 spoke time with passengers and TSA agents at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport on Wednesday. While no one was turned away from a flight, Tara Corse said about 40 individuals had to undergo enhanced screening. This is just day one of the REAL ID enforcement. Kim Hunt, Vice President of Communications for the Birmingham Airport Authority, reminds the flying public that having the proper ID in the days ahead is important. 'What we do know is that if you show up for a flight and you don't have the Star ID or an alternative that's acceptable to the TSA, you will most likely face delays, some sort of enhanced screening, and there's also the possibility you may not get through the checkpoint,' Hunt said. Other forms of acceptable ID include a U.S. passport or military ID. Those under the age of 18 are not required to have a REAL ID. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Waiting room fills up in Dothan troopers' office as Star ID deadline approaches
DOTHAN, Ala. (WDHN) — It is less than a week away from the enforcement of the Real ID, and lines at the state troopers' office in Dothan are getting longer. Time is slowly winding down before Alabama residents are forced to get their STAR ID. This new form of identification stems from the Real ID Act, which was passed in 2005, and serves as another way to enhance security measures for residents seeking to fly domestically, enter military facilities, or access government buildings. With the May 7th deadline just around the corner, anyone who does not have a STAR ID can expect to encounter problems. 'If they do not have the Star ID on their driver's license at the time they wish to travel, they won't be able to gain access onto that aircraft,' said ALEA Senior Trooper Kendra McKinney. Throughout the day, many Wiregrass residents packed the Alea State Troopers' office, hoping to get their new form of ID before the deadline. However, according to Senior Trooper Kendra McKinney, the deadline is not what people think it is. 'May 7th is not a deadline, it is just the enforcement date when it will be taking place,' McKinney said. 'There's nothing to worry about, you'll still have that chance. Unless you are planning to travel within the next three months, then yes, go ahead and try to get that star on your driver's license.' For those still seeking to obtain their Star ID, they will need to visit a driver's license examiner's office. Walk-ins are welcome at the ALEA office; however, the office recommends scheduling an appointment online. To expedite the process for everyone involved, Trooper McKinney requests that all parties bring the necessary documents to the office. 'You'll need to have your birth certificate; that way, we can confirm your identity,' McKinney said. 'Along with your Social Security card, and two pieces of mail that show your residency within the state of Alabama.' Trooper McKinney is also warning the public of a potential scam that claims people can apply for the Star ID online, when in fact, that is false. The new identification can only be obtained in person. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Watch out for scams when getting your Star ID
ALABAMA (WHNT) — The May 7th date is looming for fliers. That's the date TSA will start asking for a real ID or 'Star ID' if you're in Alabama. Trooper Brandon Bailey with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said this form of identification creates a safer, more secure way for people to fly. 'We can securely identify who you say you are when you get on these planes and try to cut down and make traveling a safer experience for everybody,' he said. Alabama Attorney General announces lawsuit against TikTok, ByteDance Inc. Although millions across Alabama are scrambling to get the ID, you'd rather get caught waiting in line than lose your identity to a scam. 'You've got to have multiple forms of ID for this, said Karen Reeves. 'That's why it does open us up for identity theft. So if we were to go to a bogus website and put all this information in, someone would have everything they needed, you know, for identity theft.' That's why the Better Business Bureau of North Alabama is warning people against scammers offering an easy 'order online option.' 'It is federally required that you show up in person to get a star ID, and that comes back to just simply so we can identify, we can lay hands on those documents and we can scan them in and so we can certify them,' said Bailey. While you should make it a priority to get the real ID if you plan to fly in the near future, it's key to know who and where to give your information. 'Scammers always want you to feel a sense of urgency, so I would just say take a few minutes, think about it, go to the actual the DMV website, and it's going to give you all the information there,' Reeves website has all the required documents to get your Star ID, including where you can make an appointment.
