Active mobile (SIM) subscriptions in Kenya increased by 6.7% to 76.2 million for the quarter ending March 2025, resulting in a penetration rate of 145.3%. Likewise, broadband services saw an uptick during the review period as Starlink's usage dipped. Fixed Internet service subscribers rose by 8.1%. Active mobile subscriptions in Kenya grew by 6.7% in Q1 2025, achieving a penetration rate of 145.3%. Broadband services witnessed an increase, with Starlink usage experiencing a decline during the same period. Fixed Internet service subscribers rose by 8.1%, while satellite Internet subscriptions dropped by 9.9%. The operators' many consumer winback initiatives throughout the reference period are reasons for this increase. During the same period, new entrant Starlink saw a sharp decline in public goodwill as subscription and user numbers dipped. Starlink lost more than 10% of its members in the first quarter of 2025. During that period, the company's subscriber base decreased by over 2,000. In sharp contrast, local service providers saw an uptick in their performance for the first quarter of 2025, having absorbed some of the users that defected from Starlink. Subscribers to fixed Internet services increased by 8.1% during the reference period, mostly due to an increase in terrestrial fixed wireless subscribers. Satellite Internet subscribers decreased by 9.9% compared to the second quarter of the 2024/2025 fiscal year, mostly due to a decrease in subscriptions to Starlink Internet Services Kenya's Low Earth Orbit satellite Internet service. As per the recent sector performance report by the Communications Authority of Kenya, mobile data/Internet subscribers increased by 1.9% to 57.2 million, from 56.1 million in the previous quarter. The need for better internet speeds has led to greater adoption of 4G and 5G mobile services. 'Mobile broadband data volume rose by 1.4 percent, reaching 576,458.8 Terabytes. However, the average mobile broadband consumption per subscription marginally declined from 13.1 GB to 13.0 GB,' the report states. During the reviewed quarter, data/internet subscriptions rose across all speed bands, with the biggest number of subscribers occurring in the 10–30 Mbps internet speed range, followed by the 2–10 Mbps band.
