12 Dead in Rehab Center Fire in Central Mexico
Israa Farhan Twelve people were killed and three others injured in a devastating fire that broke out at a drug rehabilitation center in central Mexico, according to the Guanajuato State Attorney General's Office on Sunday. The blaze occurred at a rehab facility in the violence-stricken state of Guanajuato, which has been heavily impacted by drug cartel activity in recent years. While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, authorities have previously documented attacks on similar centers by criminal groups attempting to forcibly recruit recovering addicts. State prosecutors confirmed that forensic teams have begun gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses in an effort to determine the origin of the fire. The facility, designed to help those struggling with addiction, quickly became a scene of tragedy as the fire swept through, leaving little time for escape. Drug cartels in Mexico are known to target rehabilitation centers, viewing them as places to identify and coerce vulnerable individuals into joining their ranks. These attacks are part of a broader pattern of violence associated with criminal competition and forced recruitment. In a similar incident in April, gunmen stormed a rehab clinic in the northern state of Sinaloa, killing at least nine people. Officials suspect such attacks are aimed at punishing those who refuse to work for the cartels. Mexico continues to battle rising levels of violence linked to drug trafficking and organized crime. The fire in Guanajuato adds to a series of deadly incidents highlighting the urgent need for greater protection of healthcare and rehabilitation facilities across the country. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

A man fell to his death from a hot air balloon that went up in flames during a Mexican festival Sunday, after he heroically saved the lives of two other people onboard in a horrific accident caught on camera. Harrowing footage posted on X shows the man dangling from a rope that he became entangled in as the basket above him, a raging inferno billowing smoke, floats higher and higher above the ground in an overcast sky. The balloon is next seen gliding along a sunny, bright blue sky when the desperate man, just a black dot from the vast distance, lets go and plummets many feet to Earth. The 40-year-old man, identified only as Luicio N. by the police, died in the fall, according to the Riviera Maya News. — Collin Rugg (@CollinRugg) May 13, 2025 'I regret to inform you that during the First Balloon Festival, part of the Enrique Estrada 2025 Fair organized by the city council of this municipality, a person lost their life after an unfortunate incident while aboard a hot air balloon,' said Secretary General Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza. The terrifying incident began on the ground when the hot air balloon, participating in the Zacatecas First Balloon Festival at the Enrique Estrada Fair, caught fire with Luicio and two other passengers sitting inside. Lucio heroically leapt into action, grabbing the two passengers out of its basket and guiding them to safety. But as the balloon moved, Lucio became entangled in its lines and was lifted into the air with it. He dangled from the rope until his fatal fall, according to the local outlet. Police arrived at the scene to recover the hero's body, and paramedics took the two injured passengers to a local hospital, where they were treated for first-degree burns. Cops are investigating the accident and encouraged hot air balloon operators to take all safety precautions, the Riviera Maya News reported. 'We have asked the State Attorney General's Office to conduct the corresponding investigations to clarify the facts and determine responsibility. We urge all municipal authorities to strengthen their verification mechanisms to avoid these types of risks during their activities and festivities,' Reyes Mugüerza said.
