Melaka draw up plans to address flooding in Bemban state constituency

JASIN: Flooding problems that frequently affect several areas in the Bemban state constituency are expected to be resolved by next year through the implementation of short-term and long-term solutions. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said some of the flood-prone areas identified included Kampung Asam Kumbang, Lubuk Kasau and Tehel. 'This includes various immediate measures undertaken, such as river deepening and the construction of embankments by housing developers at Sungai Asam Kumbang to ensure smoother water flow. 'The state government, through the relevant departments, will also carry out follow-up actions such as installing stone-filled wire cages in the area to reduce the risk of overflow during heavy rains and to prevent riverbank erosion,' he told reporters here today. He said this after officiating the Jasin Municipal Council (MPJ) Prihatin di Hatiku Programme in conjunction with the Bemban state constituency's 'Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat' (WRUR) programme. Meanwhile, he said the issue of renewing electronic cigarette or vape business licences in the state would be coordinated at the Melaka State Executive Council (MMKN) level soon. He said they are gathering information from all local authorities (PBT) in the state regarding vape sales premises that have not renewed their business licences.

Melaka poultry farm shut over odour and fly complaints

JASIN: A poultry farm in Simpang Bekoh here has been ordered to shut down immediately following ongoing complaints over foul odours and fly infestations that have caused discomfort to residents. State Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the company failed to resolve the issues despite being repeatedly fined. 'The revocation of the operating licence falls under the authority of the Melaka Department of Veterinary Services director, and the premises will only be allowed to resume operations once the company meets five stipulated hygiene and the satisfaction of the residents. '...as long as the company fails to take corrective measures and comply with the conditions, the factory will not be allowed to operate,' he told reporters at Taman Kesang Damai here. Earlier, he launched the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme under the Bemban state constituency, which was also attended by the State Housing, Local Government, Irrigation, Climate Change, and Disaster Management Committee chairman, Datuk Rais Yasin. Elaborating, Dr Muhamad Akmal said the farm closure, which has been in effect since June 18, involves the main coop housing between 70,000 and 80,000 chickens. He said the main issue was poor management, as the company had only assigned 12 workers to handle 16 coops, resulting in inefficient waste management that led to foul odours and fly infestations. 'This (closure) action is not intended to burden the operator, but rather to safeguard the well-being of residents in the area and to ensure that all companies involved in the state's livestock sector comply with the prescribed regulations,' he said. Meanwhile, he said the WRUR programme, which provides a platform for the public to voice their concerns directly, reflects the state government's commitment to addressing the people's issues comprehensively, in addition to strengthening governance based on the needs of the people and ensuring that no community is left behind. '...four state constituencies have completed the WRUR programme, and we are (conducting the programme) in the fifth, where we will be stationed here for two weeks with the full involvement of state government machinery, including departments, agencies, and local authorities,' he added.

Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy urges eligible to apply for new rice cards

Eluru: State Housing, Information and Public Relations Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy has said that six types of services have been made available, including issuance of new rice cards, division of cards, change of address, addition of members, removal of existing ones and surrender of cards. In a statement issued on Thursday, he said that an opportunity has been provided to register at the nearest village and ward secretariats seeking new ration cards. Similarly, an opportunity has been provided to correct the wrong Aadhaar number seeding in the rice card. He said that the government is preparing to issue new rice cards in the form of smart cards in June. He said that the Election Commission of India had issued orders in March last year to stop the issuance of new cards in the context of the 2024 elections. As per the orders issued by the Supreme Court to make e-KYC registration mandatory, there was no opportunity to issue new cards. However, he said that in the wake of the 94.4 per cent completion of the e-KYC process so far, the opportunity has been provided for the issuance of new rice cards. He said that there are a total of 1, 46, 21, 223 rice cards in the state and about 4, 24, 59, 028 people have registered their names through these cards. He said that about 6,45,765 people have been exempted from e-KYC due to the clause that children under five years of age and those above 80 years of age do not need to do e-KYC. Similarly, 3.94 lakh people have already registered for changes and additions to their rice cards. He said that smart rice cards with QR codes will be issued in June this year. He said that all the details of the family members will be on those cards and all the details will be visible when the card is scanned. By linking this card to the database, the data will also be automatically updated in the system. He said that by scanning the QR code, the ration details for six months will be known. He said that it is easy to get ration anywhere in the country with a smart card. He said that there are a total of 6, 20, 146 rice cards in Eluru district and about 17, 31, 461 people have registered their names through these cards. He said that 16, 15, 078 people have completed e-KYC in the district so far. He said that due to the clarification that children below five years of age and those above 80 years of age do not need to do e-KYC, about 25,030 people were exempted from e-KYC.
