King and Queen get lavish welcome as they touch down for whistlestop Canada tour

King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in Canada for a 24 hour visit to North America and were welcomed by the Governor General, prime minister Mark Carney and other dignitaries The King and Queen received a ceremonial welcome as they touched down in Canada for a whirlwind visit to the nation's capital to attend the State Opening of Parliament tomorrow. Charles - making his first trip as head of state - and Camilla touched down in the capital Ottawa at 1.30pm local time, on board a Royal Canadian Air Force jet dispatched to bring them across the Atlantic. The Queen wore a pale pink fringed Anna Valentine coat dress, Chanel shoes and, in a diplomatic nod to her hosts, a diamond maple leaf brooch, which was originally a gift from King George VI to the Queen Mother. ‌ ‌ The historic trip, lasting just 24 hours, was brought together after newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney, former head of the Bank of England, invited the King to attend the state opening of parliament. Charles will on Tuesday attend the event and deliver the objectives of the new Canadian government, much the same as he would do in the UK, but without the formality or royal regalia. Schoolchildren from Ontario and Quebec joined dignitaries including the Governor General, prime minister Carney and representatives of Canada's three indigenous groups, to welcome the King and Queen before they were taken to a local park to kick off a community event. Senior aides at Buckingham Palace said although the visit was indeed short, the King would hope its impact would be felt deeply by Canadians amid rising tensions with the United States. President Donald Trump provoked outrage after taking aim at Canada with a trade war and threats to annex the country as America's 51st state. Royal sources said the trip would be 'soft power in action' while Ralph Goodale, the High Commissioner for Canada in the UK, said Their Majesties visit would 'reinforce the power and the strength of the message' to Donald Trump that 'Canada is not for sale'. ‌ The King and Queen will travel to the state opening tomorrow in the 1902 State Landau carriage, while Charles will sit on a throne carved from a walnut tree from Windsor Great Park. The late Queen Elizabeth II was the first sovereign to deliver the speech at the state opening of the Canadian parliament on October 1957, her first visit to the country as head of state. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson commenting about the trip has said: "The King and Queen are very much looking forward to the programme, mindful that it is a short visit but hopefully an impactful one." ‌ Steven Guilbeault, Canada's minister of identity and culture, said: "His Majesty's delivery of the Speech from the Throne to open the 45th Parliament is a momentous occasion, one that brings Canadians together in celebration of our rich history, our democracy and the institutions that serve us all. "This visit offers an opportunity to showcase the special relationship between Canada and the Crown, while also highlighting the strength, diversity and unity that define us on the world stage." ‌ Steven Guilbeault, Canada's minister of identity and culture, said: "His Majesty's delivery of the Speech from the Throne to open the 45th Parliament is a momentous occasion - one that brings Canadians together in celebration of our rich history, our democracy and the institutions that serve us all. "This visit offers an opportunity to showcase the special relationship between Canada and the Crown, while also highlighting the strength, diversity and unity that define us on the world stage." ‌ Arriving in Ottawa on a Royal Canadian Air Force Airbus CC-330 Husky, Charles and Camilla stepped out of the aircraft to an impressive display of pomp and pageantry, with a rousing musical performance by the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces and a 25-member Guard of Honour from the Royal Canadian Dragoons, for which the King is Colonel-in-Chief. Almost a dozen dignitaries waited to greet them at the bottom of the steps as they stepped out onto Canadian soil for the first since the King ascended the throne in September 2022. Among those waiting in the beaming sunshine included newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife, Diana, who the King greeted warmly and kept a prolonged handshake. ‌ Representatives of Canada's First Nations communities were among the welcoming party, including Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, who was wearing a rare treaty medal that was given to one of the original signatories of Treaty 2 - which established land reserves, education and other provisions for the First Nations. Cindy showed the King the silver medal, which show two people shaking hands and were a gift given on behalf of Queen Victoria to the 9 First Nations who signed the treaty - one of which was her ancestor, Chief Richard Woodhouse.. ‌ Fourteen-year-old Lila Graham from Carleton Place, Ontario, who since the age of four has asked for food bank donations in lieu of birthday presents, presented the Queen with a posey of flowers. 'They're beautiful,' she said while the King enquired about the Coronation medal pinned to her navy blue dress. In March, Lila became one of the youngest recipients of the King Charles III Coronation medal for her community service, having helped secure over 771kg (1,700lbs) of donations for Lanark County Food Bank. The King and Queen, who flew from the UK earlier on Monday, then went over to listen to an Algonquin group playing drums. Speaking to Governor General Mary Simon, Charles said 'the drum has a lovely skin on it,' before going on to greet dozens of schoolchildren from Ontario and Quebec who had gathered to greet the royal couple. One of the school groups comprised of pupils enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, a youth achievement programme that encourages personal development and was founded by the King's father, Prince Philip, in 1956. After shaking as many hands as they could, the King and Queen got into the waiting car and headed to their next engagement at Lansdowne Park.

Charles lands in Canada for whistlestop visit amid country's tensions with Trump

King Charles and Queen Camilla have kicked off their whistlestop trip to Canada, which has been described as a sign of strength and support for the country amid a war of words with Donald Trump. The royal couple landed in Ottawa this evening marking the first time that Charles has been on Canadian soil since he became King and head of state of the country. The King and Queen were greeted by Canadian Mounties and flag waving schoolchildren. The Queen wore a pale pink fringed Anna Valentine coat dress, Chanel shoes and, in a diplomatic nod to her hosts, a diamond maple leaf brooch, which was originally a gift from King George VI to the Queen Mother. Schoolchildren from Ontario and Quebec joined dignitaries including the Governor General, prime minister Carney and representatives of Canada's three indigenous groups, to welcome the King and Queen before they were taken to a local park to kick off a community event. Senior aides at Buckingham Palace said although the visit was indeed short at just two days, the King would hope its impact would be felt deeply by Canadians amid rising tensions with the United States. Later today, the King will hold audiences with Canada's first indigenous Governor General, Mary Simon, the King's representative in Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney, and there will be a short ceremony to swear in Camilla as a member of the Canadian Privy Council. Charles and Camilla's events will conclude today with a short reception for lieutenant governors from Canada's 10 provinces and the territorial commissioners from the three territories. The trip comes in the wake of verbal aggression from US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Canada should become the 51st state of America, prompting outrage. When new when Canadian PM Mr Carney met Trump at the White House in the days after his election victory last month, he told him in no uncertain terms Canada is "not for sale". However, the unprecedented trip, which will be Charles' first to Canada as King, will also see him walk a diplomatic tightrope. He faces the difficult task of balancing his duties as Canada's head of state and his role in Keir Starmer's attempt at maintaining strong relations between the UK and the US. The centrepiece of the trip to Canada will be tomorrow (Tuesday) when Charles and Camilla will attend the state opening of parliament, similar to the UK parliament's opening ceremony but without the formality or royal regalia found in Britain. They will travel to the state openingin the 1902 State Landau carriage, while Charles will sit on a throne carved from a walnut tree from Windsor Great Park. The late Queen was the first sovereign to deliver a speech at the state opening of the Canadian parliament in October 1957, her first visit to the country as head of state. During their two-day trip, Charles will become only the second monarch, after Queen Elizabeth II, to attend the state opening of Canada's parliament and deliver the speech setting out the government's legislative agenda. Charles will be delivering the words of the Canadian government, similar to a UK State opening of parliament, but commentators will be looking for any veiled references to Trump. The King istravelling with his wife less than a month after former Bank of England governor Mark Carney's Liberal Party election victory, fuelled in part by its opposition to the US leader. Mr Carney's rival, populist Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, was in the lead until Mr Trump took aim at Canada with a trade war and threats to annex the country as the 51st state, comments denounced by the ex-governor. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson commenting about the trip has said: "The King and Queen are very much looking forward to the programme, mindful that it is a short visit but hopefully an impactful one." Steven Guilbeault, Canada's minister of identity and culture, said: "His Majesty's delivery of the Speech from the Throne to open the 45th Parliament is a momentous occasion, one that brings Canadians together in celebration of our rich history, our democracy and the institutions that serve us all. King Charles and Queen Camilla embody Britain's special bond with Canada

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will be in Canada next week. They'll be visiting the nation's capital, Ottawa, between May 26-27. While they've both visited Canada on previous occasions, this is their first visit to my country since the Coronation. Their two-day itinerary is fairly packed, all things considered. The King and Queen will greet the troops of Canada's senior-most armoured regiment, the Royal Canadian Dragoons, on May 26. They will attend a community gathering at Lansdowne Park open to the general public, and be part of a ceremonial tree planting. They're scheduled on May 27 to ride down historic Wellington Street in the 1902 State Landau, an early 20th century horse-drawn carriage owned by the United Kingdom and used by the British monarch on visits to Canada. His Majesty will also be delivering the throne speech for prime minister Mark Carney's Liberal government in the Canadian senate. This is the main reason for the Ottawa trip, and it's of great historical significance. It's the first time this has happened in Canada since 1977, when his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, honoured our country in the same fashion. It's nice to see that our two countries are paying a considerable amount of attention to this Royal visit. No-one is suggesting their usual comings and goings are ignored, of course! But when Charles and Camilla travel abroad and participate in goodwill tours, the people and the press will generally have a light awareness and little else. Why is it seemingly different for Canada? There could be a few reasons. Charles and Camilla are putting themselves in front of the public eye for a good cause, which certainly helps attract interest and attention. Carney's invitation to King Charles to deliver the throne speech on behalf of his Liberal government – a good public relations move on his part, to his credit – has created a heightened awareness of this special visit and an appreciation of the historic bond between Canada and Britain. King Charles III has always had a soft spot for Canada and its beautiful landscape, too. It began with the young prince's first trip to the Great White North in 1970. The Globe and Mail observed at the time: 'He had never been in North America before, but he appeared totally at ease.' He has since visited many Canadian cities, communities and provinces, including the Northwest Territories. He famously went ice diving in 1975, living up to the nickname the press gave him for a spell: 'Action Man.' Charles wrote about this watery excursion in his journal: 'There were fascinating ice crystal formations and icicles suspended under the ice and inside the layers of these wafer thin crystal structures were large white shrimp like creatures.' There was also his highly publicised 1983 trip to Canada with Princess Diana, a ski trip to beautiful Whistler, British Columbia with Prince William and Prince Harry, and his first visit with Camilla in 2009. The latter excursion was of special interest to Her Majesty, who has Canadian roots. They visited Dundurn Castle in Hamilton, Ontario, which is where her great-great-great-grandfather, Sir Allan Napier MacNab, lived when he was joint premier (or prime minister) of the Province of Canada between 1854-1856. The ties that bind, indeed. Best wishes to King Charles III and Queen Camilla on their trip to Canada. Rest assured that Canadians, Brits and others around the world will be watching with interest. Their Majesties' itineraries for the two-day visit, May 26-27, were released on Tuesday. 'This will be His Majesty's first visit to Canada since his Coronation — a momentous and historic occasion that underscores Canada's identity and sovereignty as a constitutional monarchy,' Canada Heritage wrote. In addition to delivering the first throne speech from a monarch since 1977 , here's what the King and Queen are scheduled to attend on their quick trip. Monday, May 26 After arriving in Ottawa, where they'll be greeted by troops from the Royal Canadian Dragoons — the most senior armoured regiment in the Canadian Forces — the royal pair are set to attend an early-afternoon community gathering at Landsdowne Park, which will be open to the general public. 'Their Majesties will meet and engage with Canadian individuals and organizations showcasing Canadian identity and diversity and take part in various activities,' according to the itinerary. Within an hour, it's off to Governor General of Canada Mary Simon's residence at Rideau Hall, where the provincial Lieutenant Governors and Territorial Commissioners will have a chance to meet with the monarchs. King Charles will also be joined by Viceregal representatives, community groups and school groups for a ceremonial tree planting. The rest of the day includes an audience with Simon and Prime Minister Mark Carney. The Liberal leader extended the invitation to King Charles on a visit to the U.K. immediately after his swearing in as Canada's prime minister in mid-March. 'That clearly underscores the sovereignty of our country,' Carney said when the visit was first announced. Tuesday, May 27 Day two of their visit begins at the Bank of Canada with a ride down Wellington Street aboard Canada's State Landau — a luxury 19th-century carriage — and accompanied by RCMP Musical Ride horses. On their last visit in 2022 to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Charles and Camilla visited the home of the ceremonial equine team to meet riders and attend a special performance. His Majesty was appointed an honorary commissioner of the RCMP in 2012. In 2023, he was presented with Noble, a horse given to him by the RCMP to mark his acceptance of the role of Commissioner-in-Chief of the RCMP during a ceremony at Windsor Castle in England. Both the scheduled 25-minute ride and their arrival at the Senate of Canada are open to the public. Outside the Senate, 'The King will receive full military honours which will include a Royal Salute, a 100-person guard of honour from the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment, an inspection of the guard and the band, and a 21-gun salute.' The speech from the Throne to open Canada's 45th parliament is scheduled for 11 a.m. from the Senate Chamber. The last monarch to do so was the King's mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, in 1977. The pair will close out their morning with a public wreath-laying at the National War Memorial to mark the 25th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Their Majesties are scheduled to depart later that day. How many times have King Charles and Queen Camilla visited Canada? This will be King Charles' 20th official and personal documented trip to Canada. His first came alongside his late parents, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1970 when he was 22. Their last visit in 2022, when Charles was still Prince of Wales, lasted three days and saw them arrive in St. John's before visiting Ottawa and then the Northwest Territories. A trip in 2017 was also three days long, starting in Iqaluit, Nunavut, before moving on to Ontario's Prince Edward County and finishing up in Ottawa and Gatineau, Que. Visits in 2014 and 2012 lasted four days, while a trip in 2009, their first to Canada as an official couple and the Queen's first of five visits to date, was a nine-day excursion that brought them from Newfoundland, through Ontario and Quebec, to British Columbia. The King's longest stay in Canada came in 1975 when he was serving aboard the HMS Hermes. The longest official visit was the first leg of a cross-Canada Royal Couple tour with the late Princess Diana in 1983 — an 18-day stay throughout Atlantic Canada. Warming up at Canada House In advance of this visit, Their Majesties visited Canada House in London on Tuesday to mark the 100th anniversary of the High Commission of Canada in the United Kingdom. 🇨🇦 Happy 100 years to Canada House! Ahead of Their Majesties' visit to Ottawa next week, The King and Queen have visited Canada House to mark a century since it opened in June 1925. Canada House has become a symbol of Canada in London and a showcase for Canadian art, culture… After viewing an enormous floor map of Canada, His Majesty was presented with keys to the building first opened by his great-grandfather, King George V, in 1925. 'Your presence here today launches your journey to Canada next week. This will be your 20th visit, but your first as reigning monarch,' said Ralph Goodale, High Commissioner for Canada in the U.K., per the Daily Mail. 'Your dear mother Queen Elizabeth II often said to the delight of Canadians that a journey to Canada felt like coming home. We hope that you feel exactly the same way.'
