Alor Gajah Flood Mitigation Phase 1 ready by 2026
ALOR GAJAH: The Alor Gajah Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) Phase 1 project, which began in August 2022, has now recorded physical progress of 66 per cent and is expected to be fully completed in January 2026. State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Senior Exco Datuk Rais Yasin said that despite a slight delay of four per cent from the original schedule due to utility and land issues, the overall implementation of the project is still on track. 'This project is expected to benefit 1,275 residents who are often affected by floods, especially in the Taman Sri Bayu area, surrounding housing estates and several villages in the Rembia state constituency,' he said when met by the media after accompanying Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh to inspect and attend a briefing at the project site in Seri Pengkalan, here today. Earlier, Ab Rauf spent almost 30 minutes inspecting the location, which was also attended by State Public Works, Infrastructure, Public Amenities and Transport Exco, Datuk Hameed Mytheen Kunju Basheer, State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Exco Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan and Melaka Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) director, Ir. Mohd Adnan Ahmad Fauzi. Meanwhile, Rais said the high-impact project which includes the construction of a 10-hectare flood reservoir has now achieved 87 per cent progress, in addition to the one-kilometre Sungai Alor Gajah upgrade work in Taman Sri Bayu 2 which has reached 62 per cent, and the construction of a 350-metre flood barrier has been fully completed. 'More importantly, when the original project worth RM17 million is completed, the flood area will be reduced is an estimated 418 hectares,' he said. Rais added that the Chief Minister's visit, which is the second time to review the progress of the project, is a sign of continued support for efforts to improve the drainage and flood protection systems in the area. 'God willing, this project will be completed as expected and will provide great benefits to the residents. Although there are minor delays, everything is still under control and in implementation,' he said. - Bernama

Johor exco: Drivers can use six-lane upgrade on PLUS highway near Kulai from next year
JOHOR BAHRU, July 25 — North-South Expressway (PLUS) users are expected to begin enjoying six-lane convenience as early as next year when a four-kilometre stretch of the Kulai to Sedenak highway widening project is opened in phases. State Public Works, Transport, Infrastructure and Communications Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said the stretch was part of Phase 1, Package 1, involving a 14-kilometre widening project from Kulai to Sedenak costing RM249 million. 'Construction work began on June 28 last year and is expected to be fully completed by June 28, 2027. As of now, project progress stands at 16.44 per cent compared to the original schedule of 20.02 per cent, a delay of 3.58 per cent. 'Therefore, the state government has held discussions with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), PLUS Malaysia Berhad, and the contractors involved to ensure the project is back on schedule by this September,' he said in a Facebook post today. For Phase 1, Package 2, the widening works covering seven kilometres from Sedenak to Simpang Renggam began on June 22 with a cost of RM160 million, and is currently at the initial construction stage. The project is expected to be completed by Dec 22, 2027. Meanwhile, for Phase 2 involving a 16-kilometre stretch from Simpang Renggam to Machap, the main contractor was appointed on July 1 and is expected to commence site work this Sunday, July 27. This phase costs RM439 million and is slated for full completion by July 27, 2029. The highway widening project is implemented to improve traffic flow along the main southern route of the country and support the state's infrastructure development agenda under the Maju Johor 2030 initiative. — Bernama

Kelantan seeks federal funds to upgrade Gerik-Jeli highway safety
KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government has formally requested federal funding to upgrade the Gerik–Jeli stretch of the East-West Highway (JRTB) to improve road safety and user comfort. State Public Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin confirmed the application was submitted through the state Public Works Department (JKR). The proposed upgrades include five key components: slope repairs, overtaking lanes, corrugated metal drainage pipes, New Jersey concrete barriers, and solar-powered streetlights. 'The state is also procuring LED warning signboards that illuminate at night to alert motorists, especially in low-visibility areas,' Izani said. The request follows concerns over frequent accidents, including wildlife-related incidents. Izani addressed the issue during the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly in response to a question from Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil (PAS–Kuala Balah). To mitigate wildlife hazards, the state is collaborating with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) to establish an elephant feeding corridor in Jeli. 'Hotspot identification is currently underway,' Izani added. For tiger conservation, movement corridors have been mapped, with plans to implement monitoring and protection measures under the Conservation Assured | Tiger Standards (CA|TS) framework. Additional safety measures include wildlife crossing signs and regular patrols by PERHILITAN personnel to guide elephants away from the highway when necessary. – Bernama

Kelantan plans two R&R stops along key highway corridors
KOTA BARU: The Kelantan government plans to develop two Rest and Service Areas (R&R) along the Lingkaran Tengah Utama (LTU) Expressway and the Kota Baru-Kuala Krai (KBKK) Highway to support local economic growth and tourism. State Public Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin said the proposed sites are in Laloh, Kuala Krai for the LTU alignment, and Bukit Bakar, Machang for the KBKK route. "These facilities are expected to create economic spillover effects, as improved connectivity drives local development,' he told the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly at the Kota Darulnaim Complex on Tuesday (July 22). Dr Izani said while the designs for the R&R sites have yet to be finalised, the state supports incorporating traditional Kelantanese architectural elements.
