Heavy rains batter Kerala: Roads and railways disrupted, crops worth crores destroyed
Torrential monsoon rains accompanied by gusty winds continued to lash Kerala on Tuesday, disrupting road and rail traffic, flooding low-lying areas, and damaging crops worth crores of rupees. The incessant downpour over the past four days has battered agricultural land, particularly in the high ranges, and triggered incidents of uprooted trees, house wall collapses, and electrical short circuits across the state. Since the onset of the monsoon last week on May 24, three casualties have been reported, prompting the state government to open a dozen relief camps in affected districts, officials said. In Wayanad, 242.74 hectares of farmland have been destroyed due to rains, flooding and strong winds, while agricultural crops in 101.47 hectares of land have been lost in neighbouring Kozhikode district, authorities said. The falling of uprooted trees on railway tracks has caused great concern in northern districts since last night. Several trains are running four to five hours behind schedule due to blockages caused by fallen trees. An electric line fell upon the track in the Kozhikode-Areekode route following the uprooting of a huge tree, authorities said. It took a few hours for the authorities to clear the track and restore normal train traffic on the route. According to railway sources, many trains, including Thiruvananthapuram-bound Vande Bharat Express and Parasuram Express, reached their destinations late. State Public Works Department Minister PA Mohammed Riyas visited the railway tracks near Kozhikode to assess the damage and said the railways had been alerted to manage trees along the tracks. 'Meetings and review sessions with people's representatives were held as early as April. However, this time the weather has changed drastically, which is part of the challenge,' he said. According to the local meteorological office, heavy rainfall was recorded Tuesday morning in Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts, with Vellanikara in Thrissur reporting the highest rainfall at 114.7 mm, followed by 113.4 mm in Kozhikode city and 113.2 mm in Kannur.

New statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inaugurated at Sindhudurg
Nine months after a grand statue of Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj collapsed at the Rajkot fort in Sindhudurg, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday (May 11, 2025) unveiled a new and bigger statue at the same location. 'A grand statue of Shivaji Maharaj will inspire future generations. An attractive statue has been erected in record time. This statue will stand for at least 100 years. It will lead to the development of the surrounding area to boost tourism,' Mr. Fadnavis said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had tendered an apology to the warrior king after the statue Mr. Modi had unveiled collapsed in August 2024. The Government had thereafter announced the construction of a new statue at the same location. A police case was also registered in the matter. Speaking on the security situation in Maharashtra, the CM said the Government had reviewed security and was in a state of preparedness. 'Special attention was given to the region's challenging weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and storms typical of the Konkan belt, during the design and construction phases. The statue has been structurally reinforced to withstand extreme weather. Even in adverse conditions such as storms, the statue is designed to remain unaffected and stable, ensuring long-term safety and durability. The statue stands 91 feet tall with a 10-foot pedestrian base, making it the tallest statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in India. The structure has been engineered for durability, with a projected lifespan of 100 years. A ten-year maintenance guarantee has been secured with the builders,' Mr. Fadnavis said. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other Ministers of the Maharashtra government were also present at the unveiling ceremony. The statue was built at a cost of ₹31.75 crore by the State Public Works Department. The work was completed by the senior sculptor Ram Sutar's company. The sword-bearing statue stands 60 feet tall and is made entirely of bronze. A stainless steel framework has been used to support the statue, and high-grade M50 concrete and stainless steel bars have been used for the pedestal. The concept and design were verified by the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.

GENERAL MUKAH, April 23 (Bernama) -- The construction of a 11.6-kilometre road linking Kampung Medong, Lebrasau and Kampung Klid road in Dalat District here, valued at over RM74.18 million, has fallen more than 70 days behind schedule, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said today. 'I will hold a meeting on April 30 to determine the constraints faced by the contractor. This project is already more than 70 days behind schedule, which is not a good sign,' he said. Originally slated for completion on July 19, the project's new target date has been revised to Jan 27 next year. Uggah noted that the contractor has given assurance that the project can be completed by the revised deadline. Uggah, who also serves as the State Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, stressed that Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had directed all state projects to be completed within the approved timeframe.
