Perak targets 20 entrepreneurs to expand market abroad
TELUK INTAN: Perak aims to target 20 entrepreneurs in the state to expand their market by showcasing local products abroad throughout this year. State Women, Family, Social Welfare, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, said her party, in collaboration with the Perak State Entrepreneur Secretariat (STeP), is always trying to bring entrepreneurs to participate in various expos and exhibitions abroad. She said that among the exhibitions or trade expos that Perak entrepreneurs will be participating in are the 'Brunei Consumer Fair 2025', 'World Expo Osaka 2025' and 'Fine Food New Zealand 2025', which will take place this month 'I always emphasise to the agencies involved to jointly help entrepreneurs or companies that have the potential to be taken abroad (promote their products) by solving the problems (constraints) they face. 'The state government is indeed very supportive of Perak entrepreneurs who dare to explore the global market which actually provides wider and larger opportunities and space and not just being too dependent on the domestic market,' she said. She told reporters after officiating the release of a container of cordial products from Syarikat Ameen Products Sdn Bhd to Mali, Africa, at its factory in the Light Industry Park here today. Meanwhile, Salbiah said one of the challenges entrepreneurs face in expanding their businesses or increasing product capacity is the lack of industrial parks in several districts of the state. 'When some of our entrepreneurs want to expand their products or markets, they face constraints in terms of size to expand their products. 'So, the state government sees the need (to develop industrial parks) by identifying suitable areas,' she said.

Sarawak to become ageing state by 2028 amid citizenship application delays, says Fatimah
Fatimah visits the state NRD in Kuching. KUCHING (May 30): A total of 628 citizenship applications, out of the 1,567 received between 2018 and last year, are still being processed as of April 30 this year, said State Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah. She said the applications were submitted under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution to the state National Registration Department (NRD). 'The Sarawak state-level Special Working Committee has also received 66 citizenship applications under the same Article from September 5 last year and February this year,' she said following a working visit to the NRD at Bangunan Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang here today. As of last month, Fatimah said the state NRD had received and approved 42 applications for the inclusion of the 'K' indicator in the MyKad for the children involved. Of these, 27 applications were processed in Sibu, 12 at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Kuching, and one each in Mukah, Bintulu, and Miri. She added that the Special Task Force, meant to address citizenship issues, received 5,243 applications across Sarawak in 2023. Of those, 2,602 were approved for the issuance of identity documents, she disclosed. 'The task force's Technical Committee, which convened on May 15 this year, also approved 3,885 out of 7,981 applications received in 2024. However, out of the total 13,224 applications received overall, she said 6,737 were rejected for various reasons such as having foreign documents, lack of proof of birth in Malaysia, lack of certification by community leaders, and incomplete supporting documents. On the Endowment Fund Sarawak (EFS), Fatimah highlighted concerns on Sarawak's declining birth rate and a shift in gender ratio. 'Based on the statistics we have, Sarawak recorded more baby boys than baby girls. As this trend continues, our boys may grow up facing a limited choice of girls as future spouses,' she remarked. She said not only is Sarawak experiencing fewer births in recent years, but life expectancy is rising. 'Sarawak's life expectancy is in the 70s, which is relatively high, though still below Singapore's 80 years,' she noted. With life expectancy increasing and birth rates slowing, Sarawak is expected to become an ageing state by 2028, she pointed out. 'We must prepare for this. What are the needs, the support systems, and the challenges faced by senior citizens? These are the questions we must address,' she said, stressing the need for early preparations to ensure senior citizens can live with dignity and enjoy a good quality life. Statistics from her ministry showed there were 9,381 births as of April this year. In comparison, 30,235 births were recorded in 2024, with 33,743 births in 2023, 32,740 births (2022), 28,261 births (2021), 33,964 births (2020), and 36,117 births (2019). ageing state citizenship applications fatimah abdullah lead

Melaka boosts disabled entrepreneurs with grants, training and business support, says state exco
MELAKA, April 28 — The Melaka government, with the support of various agencies, has been implementing several programmes to empower Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) who are interested in entrepreneurship to improve their standard of living. State Women, Family, and Community Development Committee chairman Datuk Kalsom Nordin said one such initiative is the Two Years Empowerment Programme (2 YEP) by the Social Welfare Department, which provides a grant of RM5,000 for the purchase of business equipment and capital. 'For the 2023 to 2025 period, a total of 45 individuals benefit from the 2 YEP, of which 22 recipients are PwDs,' she said. 'The 2 YEP not only provides financial assistance but also appoints certified training providers who offer structured and professional training and guidance,' she said at the Melaka state assembly sitting in Seri Negeri today. She was responding to a question from Datuk Lim Ban Hong (BN-Kelebang), who inquired about the state government's efforts to support disabled individuals interested in business or running hawker stalls. Kalsom said the training also includes modules on basic business management, finance, digital marketing, and product development. This approach aims to enhance the competitiveness of participants' businesses and strengthen their ability to sustain their entrepreneurial ventures after the programme ends. She added that, in addition, the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) has introduced the 1 OKU 1 business registration scheme (S1OKU1P), which offers free business registration specifically for disabled entrepreneurs nationwide. 'S1OKU1P has been in effect since October 23, 2012, to encourage this special group to legally venture into business and improve their standard of living,' she said. 'As of March 31, 2025, a total of 1,324 businesses involving disabled individuals have been successfully registered. She added that there are other programmes aimed at supporting disabled entrepreneurs, including the Business Financing Scheme for PwDs from the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA); the fast track business licence facility by local authorities (PBTs); the Special Driving Licence for PwDs by the Road Transport Department (RTD), and Business Equipment Assistance from the Melaka Islamic Religious Council (MAIM). — Bernama
