GOPENG: The Perak government will provide additional aid to the next of kin and personnel of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) affected by the recent accident in Teluk Intan.
State Women, Family, Community Welfare, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee chairman Datuk Salbiah Mohamed said that Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad would announce the aid in greater detail.
'The Menteri Besar has just returned (from an official visit abroad), and we will hold a state executive council meeting to determine the assistance that will be provided by the state government.
'Previously, emergency assistance of RM1,000 from the Social Welfare Department was given to all the next of kin and personnel involved in the accident,' she told reporters.
In the incident that occurred at 8.50 am on May 13, nine FRU personnel were killed and nine others injured when the truck they were in collided with a stone-laden lorry on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, while returning to their base in Sungai Senam, Teluk Intan.
Meanwhile, Salbiah said a total of 18 entrepreneurs from Perak would participate in the five-day Consumer Fair & Trade Expo 2025 in Brunei, starting June 25.
She said the state is targeting RM1 million in sales during the exhibition, with products on offer including food and beverages, health and beauty items, handicrafts, dairy products and baked goods.

A brighter outlook for businesses with solar energy

PETALING JAYA: Solar panels are a significant long-term investment, but many consumers and businesses believe they are worth the cost. IT executive Muhammad Zubair A, 43, from Hulu Kelang, installed a solar panel system in 2022 after seeing his electricity bills surge. Zubair's 9kW solar system cost about RM40,000, with a deposit of RM10,000 followed by monthly payments of RM500 for five years. He explained that the solar panels create a 'contra system' on his bill, where the electricity he generates during the day is offset by the power he uses at night. Initially, his bill dropped to between RM90 and RM100. However, a new electricity tariff structure implemented in July caused his bill to rise to RM300. Despite the increase, Zubair believes solar power still makes a difference. 'Without solar I think it will be much higher,' he said. The high cost of electricity also prompted businesses to switch to solar. YC Global House Sdn Bhd director Yee Chen Wen said the online business installed a solar PV system last year. He said the change significantly lowered their electricity bill, which was a primary concern due to their constant use of air conditioners and computers. Yee views the investment as a necessary long-term strategy and noted that a 15 to 17kW solar system is a viable investment for many small businesses. The government is currently reviewing the Net Energy Metering programme and is expected to announce a new scheme this month. This follows the revised electricity tariff structure to ensure a more equitable distribution of energy subsidies.

[UPDATED] Govt allocates RM3mil for Intan to become regional centre of excellence

PUTRAJAYA: The government has allocated RM3 million to strengthen the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) as a centre of excellence for public service in the Asian region and globally. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this includes a research and development (R&D) fund of RM1 million to enhance the capacity and capability of public officers in service delivery, particularly in new focus areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, and post-quantum cryptography (PQC). Another RM1 million in R&D funding will be allocated to boost Intan's capability as a reference centre in governance and best values, human capital development, organisational management, service delivery, and best practices in public–private collaboration. The remaining RM1 million will support R&D for the publication and implementation of the Intan Country Report, similar to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and World Bank Reports, for the nation's public service. Anwar also announced that the APEL.Q @ Intan initiative, which was approved under the 2025 Budget, will continue in 2026 with an allocation of RM1.5 million.
