Report will mark conclusion of Jersey child online safety review

A report is set to be produced as part of a review examining whether measures to keep Jersey children safe from harm online are sufficiently Children, Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel said it had finished gathering evidence and aimed to release the report, with recommendations for the government, in September. It said six public hearings had been held as part of the review and it had received a number of submissions from key stakeholders and members of the of the panel, Deputy Catherine Curtis, said "key themes" had emerged as part of the investigation. She said: "The contributions we have received have helped highlight both the progress that has been made and the significant challenges that remain in keeping children safe online. "Key themes that have emerged include the growing risk of exposure to harmful content on social media platforms, the need for better digital literacy education both in and out of school and the use of mobile phones."The States of Jersey said several government policies had been introduced since the review launched in February, "most notably the ban on mobile phones in schools"."Our next steps will involve analysing the evidence received in detail and preparing a report with clear, actionable recommendations," Curtis added.

A Jersey yachtsman hopes to reduce the maritime industry's emissions by using hydrogen power to fuel boats and racer Phil Sharp has used an £347,000 grant from the States of Jersey to develop a hydrogen-powered sailing plan now is for his company, OceansLab, to scale this sustainable technology to larger vessels, including ferries."I have always been keen to push a new clean tech that we can adapt to the marine environment," he said. "This is the moment to try and kick-start the industry to demonstrate technologies that we can embrace for like inter-island ferries but also short sea shipping and longer-term, deep-sea shipping," he said."My goal is to get this technology into real vessels and ships as quickly as possible in order to reduce the detrimental effect we are seeing from the maritime sector."OceanLab uses hydrogen fuel cells and solar said the company was currently trying to commercialise the technology in order to have a "greater environmental impact" and has recently moved into a production centre to start creating and assembling the technology to Sharp also said the company has been visiting schools to teach them about clean energy on the island.

Rouge Bouillon In St Helier has reopened after emergency works to fix the "sudden appearance" of a road surface depression, the States of Jersey "slight dip" in the pavement needed immediate attention to protect public safety, the government states' infrastructure and environment team said the concave depression near the pavement was probably caused by "the recent spell of hot weather, which may have triggered a failure in the asphalt".The government said the road was monitored regularly after a sinkhole appeared in 2024 and the road was closed on Thursday evening for repairs. In December 2024 a sinkhole caused cracks to appear in the walls of a building on the corner of Clarendon Road and Rouge Bouillon, at the bottom of La Pouquelaye after a water main burst. I&E said the building was considered unsafe due to a risk of was poured into the road to underpin the building and the road reopened in May.

Investigation as five JT phone network sites damaged in Jersey

An investigation has been launched by police after "malicious damage" was made to five of JT's mobile phone network States of Jersey Police said the damage could cause potential service disruption across the island. The incidents took place at the different sites this week, twice on Wednesday and three times on Thursday. Police said officers had identified a possible suspect who was described as a man in his 40s to 50s wearing a black fleece with green trousers and blond hair. Damage occurred at both La Mare Wine Estate and Les Pres d'Auvergne on Wednesday, and at Les Landes Road, then Ville au Bas Stables and the La rue au Cerf area on force added additional security measures had been implemented at the sites, and there would be an increased police presence in the areas. Members of the public have been urged to stay away from all mobile phone sites.
