Galway café to close after 22 ‘wonderful' years
Steam Café made the announcement through social media over the August Bank Holiday, saying that it 'doesn't feel quite real'.
Owners Alan and Claire explained that the decision to close the business has been 'really difficult' but it feels like 'the right time'.
The full announcement reads: 'This doesn't feel quite real but we wanted to let you all know that after 22 wonderful years this will be our last season. Steam has been our whole life, we have grown so much, built so many amazing friends, had so much fun, learnt so much and enjoyed every moment.
'Thank you to all our wonderful customers and friends a lot of whom have been with us from the beginning. Thank you for supporting and believing in two whipper snapper young ones fuelled with a very hazy vision to build Steam into what it has become today. We are beyond grateful.
'It is really difficult to leave a thriving business but for various reasons it feels like the right time. We have been building a health and fitness business for the last few years so our plan is to develop and expand this.
'The immediate future is two more busy months with us at helm but we felt this was the moment to break the news.'
Café regulars and well-wishers took to Steam's comment section to wish Alan and Claire well in their new venture.
One commenter said: 'Really sorry to hear this news but wishing you every success in your future venture. Your extremely friendly team will be sadly missed.'
Another added: 'Gutted, going to miss Steam. Thank you so much for the years of such friendly service and the most unbelievable food and coffee. Wishing you both all the best with the new venture.'
Overall, the café-goers seemed to share the same sentiment of support for the duo, but sadness that a well-established Clifden spot will be closing.
There is still plenty of time to get your coffee or food fix from Steam Café, however, with the popular spot remaining open until the end of the summer season.
