How to play Elden Ring Nightreign smoothly on Steam Deck?
Elden Ring has always been a favourite on Steam Deck, so it's no surprise that Elden Ring Nightreign, the new multiplayer spin-off, is also getting plenty of attention from handheld players. Even though it's not Steam Deck Verified yet, it still works fine. Gamers just need to adjust a few things first. Unlike the original game, Nightreign is only marked as 'playable,' which means it might not work perfectly out of the box. That said, this roguelike version is a great fit for quick sessions on the go. Once players tweak the graphics settings, the game holds up well with smooth frame rates and fast loading. Best Steam Deck settings for Elden Ring Nightreign To get the best experience, keep a balance between visuals and performance. Here's a recommended setup: Resolution: 1280x720 Texture Quality: Medium Antialiasing Quality: High SSAO: Medium Depth of Field: Low Motion Blur: Low Shadow Quality: Low Lighting Quality: Medium Effects Quality: Low Volumetric Lighting: Low Reflection Quality: Low Shader Quality: Low Global Illumination: Low Grass Quality: Medium With this setup, you'll get around 30 to 40 frames per second during most of the game. There's no built-in frame limiter in Nightreign, but the Steam Deck lets you set one. To avoid stutters, it's best to lock the frame rate at 30 FPS. You can try for 40, but the game's performance jumps around a bit, especially during busy scenes, so expect a few hiccups. Performance tips for battles A pallid mist rose from the Night - ancient, colder than death spilled from its ruinous the call of battle, one week left until the release of #ELDENRING # now: In boss fights or big moments, the game might slow down slightly because of flashy effects. If you notice performance drops while taking damage, try lowering Lighting Quality and Texture Quality to low. That should help smooth out the action when the screen gets crowded. Even though the game isn't fully optimised yet, it still plays well on Steam Deck. And since FromSoftware has already addressed some frame rate problems on PC, it's likely more updates are coming soon. Once those patches roll out, Nightreign should get even better and may even earn that green check mark for Steam Deck Verified status like the original. Until then, lock your frame rate, tweak a few graphics, and enjoy short roguelike runs in handheld mode.

Valve made a Steam Deck Verified program for things that aren't Steam Decks
Steam announced this week that it will offer a compatibility rating that will designate when a game is supported on the company's operating system. The SteamOS Compatibility assessment is slated to roll out "in the next few weeks." This metric is an extension of the Steam Deck Verified program, and it will award a checkmark to games based on a data subset within that vetting process. In other words, game developers won't have to take any additional steps if they're already completing Steam Deck Verified. On the player end, compatible games will show a blue checkmark when viewed in the Steam Store and Steam Client while running the operating system on a device other than the Steam Deck. The announcement is mostly a future-proofing move. Right now, the Lenovo Legion Go S is the only handheld besides the Steam Deck that's officially running Valve's operating system. But Lenovo was already teasing a second iteration of the hardware at CES this year and Valve clearly has plans for the number of SteamOS platforms to grow. The landscape for handheld gaming could start looking quite different if SteamOS really takes off as a standalone service.

Just weeks later, Ubisoft walks back some disappointing Assassin's Creed Shadows news: it will be fully Steam Deck Verified "despite the fact the team thought it would not be the case"
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Assassin's Creed Shadows will be Steam Deck compatible and fully Verified at launch after all, Ubisoft has confirmed. This is a pretty big 180 from Ubisoft, which just weeks ago said in no uncertain terms that Assassin's Creed Shadows wouldn't be Steam Deck compatible at launch due to the mobile hardware's technical limitations. In a tech Q&A from February 12, Ubisoft technology director Pierre F said: "At launch, the game will not be compatible with Steam Deck, due to the fact it is below our minimum specs for PC." Now, a little more than one month later, Ubisoft dropped a Steam update confirming that not only is Assassin's Creed Shadows going to be Steam Deck compatible at launch, it'll be Steam Deck Verified as well, meaning there shouldn't be any compatibility issues. "We have some exciting news to share: our talented developers gave Steam Deck players the option to play Assassin's Creed Shadows at launch; despite initially announcing we wouldn't be able to support until later," reads the Steam update. Indeed, the team made great progress over the past few weeks and was able to make it happen for launch, despite the fact the team thought it would not be the case." Shooting down and subsequently confirming Steam Deck support within a month - six days before the game's launch - tells me Ubisoft must've received an overwhelming amount of feedback from Steam Deck players wanting to play the latest Assassin's Creed game at launch without issue. Regardless, it's good news for portable gamers ready to dive into Assassin's Creed's brush with feudal Japan. Assassin's Creed Shadows launches on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on March 20. I'm finally sold on Assassin's Creed Shadows after seeing Yasuke boot a bad guy through a building in a move that puts Assassin's Creed Odyssey's Spartan Kick to shame.
