Gritty thriller set in Northern Ireland branded 'mesmerising'

Crime drama enthusiasts can catch Gillian Anderson in one of her most acclaimed performances, as she takes on the role of a detective in a smash-hit Netflix series. The gripping thriller, which first graced BBC screens in 2013, features Gillian Anderson as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson alongside Jamie Dornan as serial murderer Paul Spector. Working as a Met Police officer, Stella is temporarily assigned to the Police Service of Northern Ireland to evaluate the advancement of a murder inquiry, with the serial killer remaining at large. The programme garnered glowing reviews from critics and boasts a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its debut season. The Guardian placed it as the tenth finest television programme of 2013. The psychological cat-and-mouse drama earned high acclaim from Anderson, who lauded writer Allan Cubitt. Regarding what attracted her to the series, she remarked: "How good the writing was - Allan is a talented writer. "I don't know how he manages to infuse so much of each character within the scene and the dialogue without description; it comes out in their personalities and their actions which is a hard thing for writers to do. "He just intrinsically knows how to do that so the characters are unique and individual. That was it first and foremost. "As an actor, anytime you are told something was written with you in mind it adds to your ego, but also to the enticement of it. It makes you prick up your ears." Not for the faint of heart, its brutal but very well acted. "It starts out slow, but trust me stick with it, because it becomes an amazingly shocking ride. "To see Gillian Anderson in this role like this was such a detour from what we have come to know her for. My goodness her acting has matured, and she plays the part perfect. "The nemesis to her part was such a good actor that I found myself despising him as if the events were real. Fans of hardcore crime thriller will love this i think. I know I did." Wendy Bardsley also chimed in: "A mesmerising show. The characters are fascinating, even the bit players and the cliche psychiatrist, there are also well written female roles. "A lot is covered in terms of trauma, anger and what is good and evil. Lots of detail on procedures that not everyone will enjoy but I found fascinating. "It is a great crime thriller with fast and slow action and some shocking explosions of rage and violence. Brilliant cast, even the children were good." The Fall is available to stream on Netflix

Amazon Prime adds all seasons of crime drama that is 'too underrated' and leaves fans wanting more

Even more viewers can rediscover the hit show Amazon Prime has just added all episodes of what fans are calling the 'best crime drama ever', which is 'too underrated'. The Fall, a gripping three-season series, is now available on the retail giant's streaming platform. It can be found in the app's recently added TV and movies section, ready for subscribers to dive back into the show. ‌ This isn't the first time it's been made readily available for binge-watching. At the time of writing, it's still accessible via Netflix as well as BBC iPlayer for free. However, the iPlayer currently states it will only be available for a few more months on its platform. ‌ First aired on BBC One in 2013, the show's synopsis reveals it follows the intertwined lives of two hunters - a serial killer hiding in plain sight and the detective desperate to catch him, reports Surrey Live. The villain, Paul Spector, masquerades as an ordinary family man, but goes on to murder several working women. When Stella Gibson, an investigating officer, takes over the cases, her past collides with the present. The cast is led by X-Files and Sex Education star Gillian Anderson as Detective Stella Gibson. Alongside her is Jamie Dornan, in one of his earlier roles before starring in The Tourist and Belfast. Upon its original release, it was a critical success, achieving a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its debut season. Overall, across its three instalments, it averages a score of 85%. ‌ When it first hit the screens, critics couldn't stop singing its praises. One critic gushed: "This show is binge watching at its best; it's at once compulsively watchable and intelligent, well-written and beautifully acted with compelling performances to boot." There's a buzz among fans who missed The Fall during its initial release, urging new viewers to dive in for a binge-worthy experience. Many argue it's worth rewatching multiple times. A Reddit user expressed their admiration, posting: "The Fall is too underrated. I have rewatched this series four times now. Every once in a while, it draws me back to the show." ‌ They continued to praise the show, saying: "The writing and acting are definitely top-notch. What sets this series apart from others is that it makes people relate to the characters, even the killer. It's just too real, like it's happening in our lives." Another fan was succinct in their praise: "Best crime drama ever. Astonishingly deep, it explores a wide range of different issues through it's characters." And yet another viewer was effusive: "Outstanding in every way. A truly well written and superbly acted thriller. Jamie Dornan blows you away with this character, so far removed from the engaging, charming characters he has played. Always loved Gillian Anderson, but have high regard for her talent after seeing her very deep and complex portrayal of this female detective." A fan couldn't contain their excitement about the series, raving: "Absolutely loved this series. I could not stop watching it and never wanted it to end. Brilliantly written, a plot that never failed to excite with characters that were mesmerizing. An insight into the dark depths of the human psyche, wanting to look away but being enthralled and captured by its essence."
