Werda School brings the sporting action with festival

IN what has become an annual spectacle on the sporting calendar, Werda School will once again host its 7s Festival tournament on Saturday, August 9. However, this year the school is going bigger and better and including a senior Fast5 netball tournament as part of the festival. Stephan Hennop, the sports co-ordinator at Werda, explained the thinking behind the expansion. 'This year there will be 34 teams competing in the festival, with most schools entering multiple teams. This marks a significant step up from last year, and we're expecting around 400 players on the day. These tournaments provide young players with valuable match experience in a competitive but supportive environment. It's also a chance for players to showcase their talent, build confidence, and connect with peers from other schools,' he said. This year the 7s festival will include the U13, U15, and U18 age groups. Hennop explained that the inclusion of the Fast5 Netball tournament was an exciting development. 'The U18 Fast5 netball tournament is an exciting addition. It broadens the sporting opportunities for our students, adds variety to the festival, and promotes greater participation across different sports. Fast5's fast-paced format brings a dynamic and engaging element to the day, which we believe players and spectators alike will really enjoy. Holding the festival on Women's Day also highlights and celebrates the importance of women in sport, making this addition especially meaningful,' he said. For those attending the festival, there will be an entry fee of R20 for visitors. The rugby festival begins at 07:40. 'For those who can't attend in person, the senior rugby games will be streamed live on EliteSport's platform via InkwaziTelevision's YouTube channel,' he said.
