Fatal Water St. shooting, child abduction denounced in 'call for unity' against violence
On the afternoon of July 12, a small crowd gathered outside a hookah store on 6050 W. Fond du Lac Ave. There was music, dancing, barbecue smoke — and an urgent press conference just around the corner. The event, held by the Office of Community Wellness and Safety, was a "call for unity" following two incidents of violence earlier this week: the July 11 abduction of 7-year-old Jamal White, and a fatal quintuple shooting that took place around midnight on July 12. The hookah store hosting the press conference was owned by 52-year-old Antwan "Tweezy" Hogans, who died in the shooting downtown at N. Water Street and E. Michigan Ave. In a call for change, community leaders from various organizations — spiritual, grassroots and civic — denounced what the Office of Community Wellness and Safety described as a "surge in violence," according to a July 12 news release. "I'm tired of seeing babies and adults' lives cut too short," said Evolve Church Pastor Charmon Pittman. It was a sentiment echoed by the conference's speakers, including activist Vaun Mayes, Critical Response Team leader Stephen Hopkins, organizer Andre Lee Ellis and local pastor Clem Richardson. They also commended search efforts for White, and the legacy of Hogans among his loved ones. Behind the podium, friends, family members and activists held up pictures of White and Hogans as others were invited to speak, too. "If we don't come together to against this negativity," Critical Response leader Stephen Hopkins said, "it will continue."
