Boy, 14, charged in William Whyte area shooting that sent 1 to hospital

Social Sharing A 14-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting incident during which gunfire was exchanged between people inside and outside a north Winnipeg home, sending one person to hospital. Police were called to the 600 block Manitoba Avenue, near McKenzie Street, around 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 with reports of gunfire. CBC previously spoke to a witness who took video of the incident, showing a group of people running near the corner of McKenzie and Manitoba. Four gunshots could be heard in the video, before a person was seen raising a shotgun and firing it. Police say they believe two youths, who were with several others who have yet to be identified, went to a residence on Manitoba Avenue, where one of the youths shot at the home. People in the home, who have not yet been identified, returned fire, police said in a Saturday news release. Officers who responded to the call found a victim on Pritchard Avenue — who they say is one of the youth suspects — suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition, and later upgraded to stable condition, the police news release said. Police wouldn't provide any further information about the victim Saturday, citing their ongoing investigation. Shortly after the victim was found, a 14-year-old was arrested near Flora Avenue and McKenzie Street. A firearm was located nearby, police say. The Winnipeg teen has been charged with discharging a firearm into or at a place in a reckless manner, unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. 61-year-old also arrested Saturday's news release also said that on Wednesday, the police service's guns and gangs unit began an investigation in response to "ongoing drug trafficking and gang activity in the William Whyte neighbourhood," including the 600 block of Manitoba Avenue. A day later, the unit executed a search warrant "in response to continuing activity at that location," seizing a Ruger shotgun, .22-calibre ammunition and shotgun shells, and drug paraphernalia, according to the release. A 61-year-old Winnipeg man faces several firearms charges in connection with the investigation, including possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition. Police spokesperson Const. Stephen Spencer told CBC on Saturday that "although the two [incidents] aren't necessarily directly related, you can assume that because it's the same area, in some way they are related." The police service's major crimes unit is continuing the investigation, and is asking anyone with information to call investigators at 204-986-6219.
