Memorial Day: Central Texas events honor fallen service members

The Brief Communities across Central Texas held Memorial Day events The events honored fallen service members going as far back as the American Revolution AUSTIN, Texas - Communities across Central Texas honored fallen service members at various Memorial Day events. What we know In East Austin, the Thankful Hubbard Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) and the Patrick Henry Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution (TXSAR) held their Memorial Day Service, which has been happening every year since 2007. They honored those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, including two Revolutionary War soldiers buried at the Texas State Cemetery. The two soldiers are Lt. Robert Rankin and Sgt. Stephen Williams. Williams also fought in the War of 1812 and the Texas War of Independence. His eulogy was given by a descendant of his. Over the weekend, the groups placed 3,200 flags on all the gravesites. What they're saying "We want to have this available for the public to come out and memorialize those who have passed in battle," Joseph Howell Burton, president of the Patrick Henry chapter of TXSAR said. What we know Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home and Cemetery in Pflugerville hosted its annual Memorial Day ceremony in the newly established Patriot Garden. What they're saying Veterans took time to connect and reflect. "The Marine Corps really changed my life big time. It taught me how to survive, discipline, and how to be a father, a son, et cetera," veteran Jim Newman said. "Memorial Day to us is just remembering veterans that have gone before us and that we survived in order to remember their names." What we know Round Rock also had a ceremony at Old Settlers Park. "Memorial Day is not just another holiday. It is a commitment. It's a commitment to remember, to reflect, and to ensure that the sacrifice of our fallen heroes and their families are never forgotten," Major General Michael McCurry with Army Futures Command said. "These were not just soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coast guardsmen. They were sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers. They were people with plans for the future with laughter and love to share, who instead gave everything for us." Memorial Day is also a time to honor Gold Star families. "Your loss is immeasurable," McCurry said. The Source Information in this report comes from reporting/interviews by FOX 7 Austin's Angela Shen

Rookie's dad compares son's game to legendary Patriots Hall of Famer

Rookie's dad compares son's game to legendary Patriots Hall of Famer New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Kyle Williams has been a highly-touted draft pick, with multiple NFL analysts singing his praises before he even takes his first snap at the next level. It should come as no surprise that his father, Stephen Williams, is his biggest supporter. He even went as far as seemingly comparing Kyle Williams' playing style to legendary wideout Julian Edelman, who is set to be inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame this year. 'I'll put it this way. If they loved No. 11, they'll love No. 18,' Stephen Williams said, via Boston Globe's Christopher Price. The Patriots have not had the best of luck at drafting wide receivers. However, they have had modest success in developing them. Edelman is a perfect example. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL draft and quickly became a staple of the Patriots' offense. Williams was one of the best pure separators in the 2025 NFL draft, and he has the ability to play in the slot and outside. He's a versatile receiving weapon with the tools to make an impact right away. In his final year at Washington State, he racked up 70 catches for 1,198 yards and 14 touchdowns. A player with Edelman-like traits would be a welcome addition to a Patriots offense that has looked like one of the worst in the league over the last two seasons. Bristol netball team 'devastated' at loss of Easton court

A netball team is campaigning to keep a full-sized netball court at a council-run leisure centre that is being redeveloped. The Back to Netball team from Easton, Bristol, says it will no longer be able to play at Easton Leisure Centre, which is run by Everyone Active on behalf of Bristol City Council., because it will no longer have a full-sized court. Susan Anderson, 62, from Hartcliffe, has been running the training sessions for 14 years and said the team was "devastated" as it had already had to relocate twice before. City councillor Stephen Williams, chair of the public health and communities committee, said he understood the disappointment but a small court would still be available. The Back to Netball sessions, run by Netball England, are designed to encourage women back to the than 20 women attend the sessions in Bristol – including women from diverse communities and team says it was not consulted in the decision to redevelop the court. Ms Anderson said: "There is a real community spirit amongst these girls."They just keep moving us and, everywhere we go, they keep taking the courts away. "They offered us another venue, but we want to stay here."Janie Randell, 42, from Fishponds, has played at the club since it started and said she would "fight" for the club because they were "such a great family". "Even on my lowest days, I come here and I feel so much better knowing I am around people and doing something good for myself," she team says it will have to find a new court to play on from 21 says the Easton Leisure centre court worked well because it was completely private, which it says also enabled Muslim women to play in a women-only environment. Ayan Mussa, 33, from Eastville, is one of them, and said: "This netball club means the world to me as a mum of four young kids."It's a really nice inclusive session where all women from all communities and backgrounds come together. "Without it I don't know what I would be doing." She added she was not sure she would be able to carry on attending sessions if they were not at the leisure centre. Another player, Merriel Waggoner, 57, from Ashley Down, said: "I have never known something so joyous, it's laughter from beginning to end. "I think it's a beautiful example of what community sport should and could be." Williams said as part of a 15-year contract with Everyone Active, the council had invested £8m in five of the city's major leisure and sporting facilities."A dedicated women's only gym, additional studio space, refurbishment of poolside areas, improvements to the reception area, and a new soft play facility will be delivered as part of the £3.3m upgrade for Easton Leisure Centre," he said."We understand the disappointment of the team impacted by a reduction in the sports hall space and netball court size. "Following these refurbishment works the new court, although no longer full-size, remains available for use and we are working with our leisure operator to identify appropriate alternative venues within our leisure sites and across Bristol's community-owned and managed facilities."
