Honeywell to address distribution centre pain points
Honeywell has teamed up with Stereolabs, a 3D vision and AI perception company, to address the pain points of weighing and sizing boxes/pallets in distribution centres. The companies developed a mobile measurement system to replace manual measuring or fixed set-ups and, in turn, boost the efficiency of logistics systems. Honeywell explained it combined its SwiftDecoder software with Stereolabs' stereoscopic cameras. The technology of each product is expected to improve various aspects of logistics operations including truck loading, vehicle allocation and tracing goods being transported. SwiftDecoder captures barcode and other written information, and the stereoscopic cameras use an AI perception system to measure the dimensions of goods. Honeywell and Stereolabs state the resulting system is capable of capturing key weight and dimension information, then upload it to a central database to help companies allocate shipping resources. The Institute of Supply Chain Management explained in a guide published in 2024 understanding the size and weight of goods are key metrics in the logistics sector, helping the industry 'manage shipping and supply chain costs'. This will enable logistics operators to better plan truck loading, understand the number of vehicles needed to transport goods and effectively trace the items being transported. Today, many warehouses and logistics providers operate manually, with some using tape measures and weigh scales to determine the dimensions and weight of products for transport. Others use fixed systems or scan tunnels to identify and measure each box and package coming through a conveyor belt. In contrast to these often inefficient processes, the mobile solution from Honeywell and Stereolabs will now allow for more agile daily operations in distribution centers. The new joint solution integrates the Stereolabs ZED stereoscopic camera and calculator with Honeywell's SwiftDecoder barcode-decoding software to capture critical weight and dimension information. From there, data is then automatically uploaded to a central database, allowing a business to understand the volume and composition of the boxes and pallets transported in each trailer in real time so it can plan the most efficient and cost-effective way to transport, load or de-stock goods.
