'Charlie Hurley number one by a distance' - fans on best CBs debate
We asked for your views on Danny Collins' list of the top five Sunderland centre-backs of the past 50 years (scroll to 12:26 BST on 4 July to see his choices). Here are some of your comments:Paul: How could any Sunderland supporter leave out Charlie Hurley? Number one by a Dave Watson and Charley Hurley were both phenomenal centre-backs. None of the others could compare - apart from Steve Bould (who was there with them), but there were not enough games under his Absolutely agree. Watson was not the biggest player, but for timing, athleticism and a sheer will to win every header and tackle, I've never seen a better one. Hurley may win it by the number of goals scored. You should have been at the matches to hear the whole crowd chanting "Charlie, Charlie, Charlie" for him to come up for a Really depends on how old you are, but Hurley was the best centre-half to play for Sunderland that I saw. Watson was great King Charlie wasn't someone you would like to experience too often in a Shaun Elliott and Jeff Clarke?

Collins names Bennett as Sunderland's second best centre back
Throughout Friday, we are revealing former Sunderland defender Danny Collins' top five Black Cats central defenders of the past 50 years. In third place, Collins chose Steve Bould, who spent a season at the club from 1999-200 after 11 distinguished and trophy-laden years at Arsenal."I know he didn't play too many games and came in at 36-years-old but Sunderland were back in the Premier League and secured a good, solid seventh-placed finish. He was a classy player and maybe would have doubted himself after so long but Arsenal and was straight in with the armband."He was brilliant but only played 23 games, which is why we're looking at the other two."Taking the silver medal is Gary Bennett, who made almost 450 appearances between 1984 and 1995 for the club, placing him fifth on the club's all-time appearance list."Longevity - 443 games. Goalscoring centre back who chipped in after scoring on his debut. I didn't see too much of Benno but by all accounts he was a modern centre back in the way he stepped in on the ball. He could drive forward, was quick and ticked a lot of boxes."He's on one of the staircases [at the Stadium of Light]. I see him every time I'm at one of the games. The achievements and longevity is amazing."Listen to Collins' selections hereOr come back later on Thursday to discover who Collins considers the best centre-back to play for Sunderland.

Advertisement Ex-Rennes boss Stephan was named QPR's new head coach earlier on Wednesday, with Marti Cifuentes' departure announced on Tuesday evening. "I'm delighted," Bould told the club website. "I think it's a great opportunity because number one, and I don't say this lightly, QPR is a great football club and always has been. "Loftus Road is a great ground and the club has a real loyal following. "I've looked around today and I can see that there's a real buzz about the place. The training ground is fantastic, the whole set-up is." Former Arsenal assistant Steve Bould set to join QPR in defensive coaching role
Former Arsenal assistant Steve Bould is set to join Queens Park Rangers in a role focused on developing young defenders. The position would mark a first in English football for Bould, 62, since he was sacked as Arsenal's Under-23 coach in May 2021, ending a 30-year association with the club. The former centre-back has been out of management since stepping down as head coach of Lommel SK, the second tier Belgian side owned by City Football Group, in January to return to the United Kingdom. Advertisement Bould's role is primarily focused on medium to long-term defender development. QPR have identified a scarcity of young defenders of high potential across European football's five major leagues. They believe appointing Bould to work specifically in this area will reap rewards down the line. Bould's move to QPR comes after the Championship club confirmed the appointment of former Rennes boss Julien Stephan as their new head coach on Wednesday. Stephan, 44, replaces Marti Cifuentes, whose departure by mutual consent was confirmed on Monday following a period of gardening leave. Bould is a club appointment rather than part of Stephans' backroom team, but will support first-team staff as part of his remit. Bould made 287 appearances for Arsenal during 11 years at the club, winning the league title three times and the FA Cup twice. He was part of Arsenal's esteemed back four alongside Lee Dixon, Tony Adams and Nigel Winterburn under the management of George Graham and Arsene Wenger, as the club enjoyed a period of sustained success during the late 1980s and 90s. He returned to Arsenal as a youth team coach in June 2001 and led the Under-18s to successive Premier Academy League titles in 2009 and 2010, and the FA Youth Cup in the 2008-09 season. In May 2012, he was promoted to assistant manager under Wenger, replacing Pat Rice. He held the role for seven years before taking the Under-23s head coach role in a switch with Freddie Ljungberg during a restructuring of the club's coaching set-up. Bould joined Lommel in 2022 and spent two and a half years at the club. QPR finished 15th in the Championship during the 2024-25 campaign.
