Investigation finds former Newberg superintendent mishandled finances, used race and gender slurs
PORTLAND, Ore. () — An investigation of former Newberg-Dundee School District Superintendent Steve Phillips substantiated several allegations made against him, including and using slurs against students based on their race and gender identity. Phillips was hired by the school board in 2022. He was fired by the school board, who cited the report as the cause, effective Feb. 14. According to the investigation, Phillips 'failed to provide adequate oversight of the District's finances and the District's overall financial status' during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years, contributing to the district's . Other allegations that the investigation found to be 'substantiated' during that same period of time include Phillips using 'racist and discriminatory language' and misrepresenting the district's compliance with state school requirements, among other things. There were also allegations found to be 'unsubstantiated' in the report, including Phillips allegedly attempting to 'blacklist' a communications coordinator employee.
