Jean Charles de Menezes Tube shooting prompts book by ex-officer
A former police officer has written a book he hopes will "put the record straight" over the death of Jean Charles de 27-year-old Brazilian electrician was killed by police outside Stockwell Tube station in south London on 22 July 2005, the day after failed bombing attempts on the city's transport networkFormer Essex Police officer Steve Reynolds had just started a new job at the Independent Police Complaints Commission when the incident took place."First of all, Jean Charles was 100% innocent," he said. "Secondly, notwithstanding that, the two officers who shot him really believed that he was a suicide bomber about to detonate the bomb at any moment."I think it's difficult to perhaps correlate those two extremes but I wanted to articulate that in the book."The Metropolitan Police was fined £175,000 with £385,000 costs over the incident, for breaching health and safety laws. But no officers were prosecuted for the April, the force reiterated its apology to the family, who said it was a "travesty" no officer was held accountable in the 20 years since his de Menezes' cousin, Patricia da Silva Armani, said: "He was a completely innocent man. And yet, he was shot in cold blood."She added that it was "unacceptable that agents of the state can act with impunity". The former officer has been a consultant on a number of documentaries about the incident as well as a drama released on Disney+ in April called Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de book is titled: The Met on Trial."It became clear to me the actual investigation was not being covered in any of those documentaries," he explained."I was also very keen to just set the record straight about what had happened, because there are so many misconceptions about what happened which are still around today."People still think that he was carrying a rucksack, that he was wearing bulky clothing, that he failed to respond to a police challenge, that he ran away... these are some of the misconceptions I wanted to put right." He explained the surveillance team misidentified Mr de Menezes as a suspect after he left his block of flats close to where the suicide bomber actually caused a miscommunication with New Scotland Yard which led the control room to believe a positive identification had taken place, Mr Reynolds incident itself took place two weeks after the 7/7 terror attacks, when 52 people were killed in central Reynolds said: "There were certainly organisational failings but those two officers genuinely believed the person they were confronting was a suicide bomber."They believed once again that this was a suicide bomber, like 7/7, about to detonate his bomb and kill many, many people."You can only imagine how distraught they were... Those two officers are also having their own flashbacks because I'm sure there can't be many days where they don't think about what happened 20 years ago."Earlier this year, the Met Police said he was killed "at a time of unprecedented terrorist threat to London".A spokesperson said the force had been subject to numerous public inquiries, including two separate reports by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (now the Independent Office for Police Conduct)."No officer sets out on duty intent on ending a life. Our sole purpose is the complete opposite – the protection and preservation of life – and we have taken extensive action to address the causes of this tragedy," said the spokesperson. Assault with racial overtones upsets Winkler, Man., known for its safety
An assault with racial overtones in Winkler has upset residents of the southern Manitoba city, which prides itself on its reputation for safety. Early in the morning of June 15, the Winkler Police Service responded to a 911 call about an assault on Harmony Lane, a residential street on the north side of the city. According to a police news release, officers found a man who had been assaulted and had his turban torn off. Police then found and charged three suspects with assault and other offences. One of the suspects in the attack remains in custody in Winnipeg, while the two others were released with a promise to appear in court in Morden, police said. Steve Reynolds, who helps newcomers settle in Winkler, said his community is shocked because one of the city's biggest draws is is reputation for being safe. "We hear that from newcomer clients all the time too, that they love the kind of safety and peacefulness of settling with their family in a smaller community, so it kind of shakes all that up," said Reynolds, who works with Regional Connections Immigrant Services. Reynolds said some newcomers may now feel less safe than they used to in Winkler, which is about 100 km southwest of Winnipeg. "It definitely would feel that way for a lot of people today, after seeing that something like this can happen here," he said. According to Statistics Canada, immigrants made up 26 per cent of Winkler's total population of 13,745 in 2021. More than a fifth of the city's newcomers that year were recent arrivals who planted roots no earlier than 2016, according to the 2021 census.

Global Pharma Leader Digitizes Entire Cleaning Validation Lifecycle with ValGenesis iClean
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 26, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ValGenesis, Inc., the market leader in digital validation lifecycle management solutions, announced that a global pharmaceutical and biotechnology leader has successfully expanded its use of the ValGenesis digital validation platform by deploying iClean, a risk-based cleaning validation solution that digitizes the entire cleaning validation lifecycle. With a global footprint spanning over 80 countries and a workforce of more than 90,000, this company provides innovative therapies and health solutions across pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare, and biotechnology. Already leveraging the ValGenesis platform for Stage 2 cleaning validation, the company has now unified all three stages of design, qualification, and continued process verification within a single integrated system. This strategic move enhances operational efficiency, eliminates cross-system vulnerabilities, and strengthens compliance with current good manufacturing practices (cGMP). Previously, the company relied on a mix of digital systems. Stage 2 was managed within the ValGenesis platform, while Stages 1 (cleaning process design) and 3 (continuous monitoring) were handled separately, resulting in data silos and process inefficiencies, particularly during stage transitions, technology transfers, and the preparation of annual product quality reviews (APQR). By transitioning the entire cleaning validation program into iClean, the company has eliminated these gaps, establishing a digital, end-to-end solution. It plans to deploy iClean at all global manufacturing sites to streamline and standardize the cleaning validation process. The integrated system now automates the entire cleaning validation lifecycle, from risk-based process development to automated worst-case assessments, MACO calculations, residual limit determination, and protocol generation. It enables digital execution of cleaning validation protocols, and dynamic impact assessments, along with real-time and continuous monitoring across all stages. This unified digital approach provides instant access to data for audits and inspections, significantly reduces the risk of human error, and ensures consistent compliance with internal policies and global regulatory standards. "It is remarkable to see this global pharma leader pioneering the digital transformation of its cleaning validation lifecycle with our digital validation platform," said Steve Reynolds, chief revenue officer at ValGenesis. "By eliminating data silos and unifying all three stages of cleaning validation into a single integrated system, it is setting a new standard for efficiency, compliance, and operational excellence. "This strategic move not only accelerates validation processes but also reinforces the company's commitment to innovation and regulatory leadership. We look forward to witnessing the profound impact of this end-to-end digital transformation across its global operations. "This milestone underscores ValGenesis' unwavering commitment to transforming validation in life sciences through cutting-edge, AI-driven digital solutions that drive efficiency, enhance accuracy, and strengthen regulatory confidence, setting a new benchmark for innovation and compliance."
