New JFK terminal to get iconic art from MoMA, the Met, Natural History Museum and Lincoln Center

John F. Kennedy International Airport's newest terminal will be getting a cultural makeover in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. The installation will bring a "curated experience reflecting the creative spirit of New York City through its world-renowned cultural institutions" to the new $4.2 billion Terminal 6. Iconic pieces of art will line the walls of the arrivals area, which will be called "museum row," according to Monday's announcement. "We're honored to collaborate with such prestigious institutions — icons in the global arts community and deeply rooted in the spirit of New York City," said Steve Thody, CEO of JFK Millennium Partners. "Each installation will reflect and celebrate the vibrant cultural heartbeat of New York as we welcome the world to JFK and beyond." The artwork is set to be revealed in 2026 alongside a partial opening of the new terminal, which is expected to bring 10 larger gates to the airport with a longer drop-off area, more airport lounges, updated TSA technology and baggage systems. Each institution gave a sneak peek into what to expect from their contribution. The Met said it is planning to document 5,000 years of art. They said the addition to the airport will include photographs of the "Unicorn Tapestry" from The Cloisters and a Dior bar suit from the Costume Institute. Yoko Ono will collaborate with MoMA on their installation, which will be inspired by her "PEACE is POWER" work and "invite travelers to engage with the depth and urgency of her voice." Lincoln Center plans to create a 140-foot mural, featuring musical artists, theater, dance, and opera along New York City streets and architecture from their venues. "The piece offers international travelers a striking first impression: a celebration of the city as a global stage where culture, creativity, and community converge," a press release described. Art will not be the only thing on display, however. The Museum of Natural History plans to highlight its scientific collection with images of iconic exhibits such as the Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton and the Rapa Nui figure from Easter Island. They will also feature components from the North America Mammals hall. The new terminal will also feature artwork from six rotating Queens artists, selected by the Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning and 19 permanent pieces from the Public Art Fund. "Terminal 6 will offer arriving visitors from around the world a unique New York experience before they leave the terminal," said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Executive Director Rick Cotton. The collaboration is just part of the nearly $20 billion expansion project announced in 2017 by the Port Authority, which planned to expand two existing terminals and create two new ones. The construction of Terminal 6 began in 2023 and is expected to open in two parts, with the first six gates opening in 2026 and the final four gates opening by 2028. The terminal will be home to both domestic and international airlines such as JetBlue, Lufthansa and more. Millennium Partners is in charge of building and operating Terminal 6.

JFK Millennium Partners Announce Latest Milestone in Transformation of John F. Kennedy International Airport with Substantial Enclosure of New JFK Terminal 6

Renderings of 'JFK Global Panorama' Large Scale 3-D Roadway Artwork Unveiled First Gates on Schedule to Open in early 2026 Over 14 Domestic & International Airlines will Operate from T6 QUEENS, N.Y., June 17, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the consortium selected to build and operate the new Terminal 6 (T6), today marked the terminal's "curtain wall" building enclosure milestone, representing one of the key remaining milestones leading up to the terminal's planned phase one opening in early 2026. This success supports other upcoming milestones, including adding permanent power and live testing the building. More than 1,200 local workers are currently on site to ensure a smooth opening for more than a dozen carriers that will be relocating to the new terminal, among them: Aer Lingus, Air Canada, ANA, Austrian Airlines, Avianca, Brussels Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Condor, Frontier, JetBlue, Kuwait Airways, Lufthansa, Norse Atlantic, and SWISS. Additional airline partners are expected to be announced shortly. Terminal 6 is a key component of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's $19 billion transformation of JFK International Airport into a world-class gateway, with two new terminals, two expanded and modernized terminals, a new ground transportation center, and an entirely new, simplified roadway network. To celebrate its curtain wall milestone and planned T6 opening in less than a year, JMP has released an updated rendering of the future T6 departures roadway artwork that will welcome millions of travelers to the terminal in the years to come. Currently under construction by JMP's design-build partner, AECOM Hunt, and expected to be erected later this fall, the 12,000 square foot "JFK Global Panorama" is a custom-designed, 3D Ombrae artwork featuring iconic New York City-based imagery and flight routes illustrating the global connectedness that T6 will bring to the world's travelers. "Our building enclosure milestone is a proud moment for our T6 team, and especially the 1,200 men and women working tirelessly to prepare the first gates for a safe and on-time opening in 2026," said Steve Thody, CEO, JFK Millennium Partners. "Together with our design-build partner AECOM Hunt, we look forward to completing the remaining upcoming milestones this summer and delivering New York's next iconic airport terminal." Since breaking ground in February 2023, workers have spent nearly four million construction hours getting the first gates ready for opening in 2026. Construction of the $4.2 billion Terminal 6 will create a total of 4,000 jobs, including 1,800 union construction jobs over the course of the project. In September 2024, workers installed a 121,000 pound, 80-foot oculus skylight – the future center point of the terminal's shopping and dining concourse. Up to 13,000 pieces of steel weighing 18,000 tons—or the equivalent steel needed to build two medium-sized, NYC skyscrapers—will be erected when the terminal is fully complete in 2028. Passengers can look forward to T6's digital-first, boutique guest experience, with a less than 5-minute average walk from the TSA security checkpoint exit to all gates. Additional features include extensive biometric-enabled, self-service bag drop facilities, 100,000 square feet of NYC-inspired shopping, dining, lounges and amenities, curated public art, sustainable operating features, and premium guest experience throughout the terminal.
