'Fix the economy Jim': Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers roasted online after revealing he's a megafan of American rapper Snoop Dogg

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has revealed his favourite musical artist is none other than rap legend Snoop Dogg- and it's sparked a flurry of reactions online. Appearing on the Today Show on Wednesday, the Treasurer told host Karl Stefanovic he was a "big fan" of the US rapper, who will headline the 2025 Toyota AFL Grand Final. When asked for his thoughts on the 53-year-old hip hop icon, Chalmers delivered an answer that caught Stefanovic off guard. "A Snoop Dogg song is my ringtone on my phone, Karl," Chalmers, speaking via video from Canberra, said to a surprised Stefanovic in the studio. "It's 'Still Dre'. I think Snoop's best work is with Dr Dre," he added. "I've taken all the cuss words out so it's just instrumental." Right on cue, the track's famous piano intro played, prompting Chalmers to giggle. "That's the one, that's my ringtone Karl!" he said excitedly. Stefanovic cheekily challenged the Treasurer to sing it: "I will give you 100 bucks if you sing this song." Chalmers laughed it off. "I won't be doing that Karl, because as you and I both know, from the dance floor of the City Rowers in the 1990s, there's a lot of cuss words in Snoop's songs, which are unrepeatable at 7am," he said, referring to the now-closed popular nightclub at Eagle Street Pier in Brisbane, where both men grew up. "But I think it's great that Snoop's doing the GF, and I'm looking forward to him performing." Stefanovic then took a playful swipe at 3AW's Tom Elliot, who has slammed the AFL's entertainment choice. Elliot earlier called it a "terrible decision", claiming: "This is at odds with what the AFL is constantly lecturing us about – you know, respect towards women. I can tell you, the hip hop culture has anything but respect towards women." "Take that, Tommy Elliot!" Stefanovic said. After Chalmers' interview, co-host Sarah Abo declared: "The Treasurer has spoken, it has got his tick of approval." Entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins also weighed in: "Gee, those cabinet meetings must be a blast, with DJ Albo spinning the decks and Jim rapping away." Stefanovic followed with another tongue-in-cheek jab: "Is it smoky in there?" a nod to Snoop Dogg's well-known fondness for marijuana. Social media lit up after the Treasurer's Snoop Dogg confession. "That's f*****g amazing! How can u not be a Boss man when u wake up like that," one fan wrote, while another added: "Gen X here, I approve this message!" But not everyone was impressed. "How about you guys talk about how this clown wants to destroy Australia's copyright laws so that AI tech bros can steal art from ACTUAL Australian artists who are worthy of 'entertainment' news," one critic wrote. "This man is a clown," another said, while a third added: "Hahaha what a complete load of crap – maybe fix the economy, Jim."
