Beloved NYC diner to be moved from Brooklyn neighborhood to Steiner Studios for movie set: report
From homefries to Hollywood. The beloved Wythe Diner in Williamsburg was sold and will be relocated to Steiner Studios, where it will spend the rest of its days starring in motion pictures and film. For years, the railcar diner on Wythe Avenue in the trendy nabe played a supporting role in movies like 'The Good Shepherd' and 'Men in Black 3' and will now be forever immortalized in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, The New York Times reported. Advertisement 'We see it as a standing set, as opposed to a set that's built for a production and torn down,' Doug Steiner, chairman of Steiner Studios, told the paper. The diner, currently on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg, will be relocated to Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Google Earth Steiner's personal connection to the eatery made him want to preserve its history rather than build a diner set from scratch. Advertisement 'That diner was one of the few places we would go to have lunch in the early days,' he said, adding, 'That was before major gentrification.' The Wythe Diner first opened in 1968 and operated under that name until the late 1980s. The old-school eatery was purchased by Sandy Stillman's Blue Sky Diner Inc. in 1997 and was reopened under the name Relish until 2010. A year later, it became the Mexican joint Cafe De La Esquina, the old-school diner's final full-service restaurant iteration before it too shuttered in 2018. In the years since, the 2,800-square-foot prefab has housed a short-lived Blank Street coffee shop and hosted pop-ups, including a Chanel fragrance event during fall fashion week in 2023, while being mostly vacant. Advertisement Over the next weeks, the '50s style diner will be moved piece by piece to the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where shows like 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,' 'Inventing Anna,' and 'Only Murders in the Building' have been filmed. Beata Zawrzel via Reuters Connec The property the diner sits on was sold by Stillman for $12.5 million to a real estate development company, which plans to build an apartment building on the lot. Stillman praised the 'above and beyond spiritual beauty, talent and desire to help save this shiny diner.' Advertisement The Wythe is not the only diner New York City has lost in recent years. Hector's Cafe, the iconic Meatpacking District diner featured in the movie 'Taxi Driver', shuttered its doors last month after 76 years of service. One year earlier, Astoria said goodbye to the Neptune Diner after 40 years of service. Meanwhile, Williamburg's other iconic — and nearly century-old — diner, Kellogg's, has been given new life thanks to a buyer who revitalized the 24/7 spot after it went up for bankruptcy sale.

The site of Williamsburg's famed Wythe Diner has sold
The site of Williamsburg's iconic '50s-style diner on Wythe Avenue — a longtime lodestar in one of the neighborhood's hippest corners — has officially traded hands for $12.5 million. The large corner lot, historically occupied by the steel frame of the shuttered Wythe Diner, is set to host a six-story mixed-use building. City records posted on Thursday confirmed the long-awaited sale. The $12.5 million deal closes a colorful chapter for the property, during which it lived many lives — as a classic railcar diner, a Mexican eatery, a coffee shop and even a Chanel pop-up. 5 The former Wythe Diner, located at the intersection of North 3rd Street. Google Earth 5 The steel structure has dominated the site since the 1950s. Eilon Paz The development is expected to include 5,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and 28 apartments above, according to a press release shared with The Post by commercial real estate brokerage TerraCRG. Plans to preserve the eye-catching prefab structure elsewhere will be announced in about a month. 'All parties collaborated thoughtfully to ensure the relocation and preservation of the vintage diner car, which is scheduled for removal post-closing,' the statement said. TerraCRG represented the property's former owner, Sandy Stillman, in the sale. Stillman operated the iconic diner Relish at the site from the late '90s to around 2010. She held on to the property through its many retail evolutions. 'What an amazing experience it was to serve this beauteous community in this sculpture of a restaurant with so much outdoor space in the early days of the BK food revolution, when it seemed as though nearly all customers were talking about art,' Stillman said in the statement. 5 The interior of the diner during its tenure as La Esquina, a Mexican restaurant. Eilon Paz 5 The site transformed into a pastel-covered confection in 2023 for a Chanel fragrance pop-up. Chanel 5 The vacant property will become a six-story development. Google Earth Stillman praised the buyers 'above and beyond spiritual beauty, talent and desire to help save this shiny diner.' The shiny shell arrived at the intersection of Williamsburg's North 3rd Street in the 1950s. Wythe Diner remained in operation until the late 1980s. The property, including the 2,800-square-foot prefab, sold to Stillman in 1998. Under Stillman's ownership, the site hosted the Mexican eatery Cafe De La Esquina, a Blank Street coffee shop and a colorful Chanel fragrance pop-up for fall Fashion Week in 2023. A report in early July by Crain's New York detailed Williamsburg-based developer Yoel Schwimmer's prospective plans to transform the site into a roughly 24,600-square-foot building. The new owner of the Wythe Avenue corner shares an address with Schwimmer's OVV LLC, so it appears that Schwimmer's plans are moving forward. The final $12.5 million deal was brokered by Andrew Manasia and Daniel Lebor at TerraCRG. Schwimmer could not be reached for comment by press time.

Canucks clear up crease logjam, trade Artūrs Šilovs to the Penguins
The Arty Party's over with the Vancouver Canucks . The Canucks announced Sunday that they had traded goalie Artūrs Šilovs to the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Chase Stillman and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. Šilovs, 24, backstopped Vancouver's AHL Abbotsford Canucks affiliate to the Calder Cup league title this season, but the big club has Thatcher Demko , 29, and Kevin Lankinen, 30, on long-term deals and Šilovs was going to need clear waivers this season to be sent down to the minors. They could have tried to sneak him back to Abbotsford, but they ran the risk of losing him for nothing. Šilovs was a massive fan favourite in Abbotsford, routinely having fans chant his name during the playoff run. He was voted AHL playoff most valuable player after fashioning a 16-7 record with a 2.01 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. In the regular season, he was 14-5-1, with 2.41 goals against average and a .908 save percentage. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. Nikita Tolopilo, 25, and Ty Young, 20, are in line to see duty in Abbotsford this coming season. Tolopilo and Šilovs split games in the regular season and Tolopilo was 20-14-2, with a 2.66 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. Team president Jim Rutherford said that a Šilovs move was possible on Sportsnet 590 in Toronto on July 2, when he said that 'as well as Šilovs played, he could be the odd guy out. He's not waiver exempt anymore. We're going to have to deal with that in the off-season.' And general manager Patrik Allvin said on the new 100% Canucks podcast with John Shannon and Landon Ferraro on July 6: 'We'll see over the next couple of weeks if we carry the goalies to camp or if a decision is made prior to it.' The trade fits with market value. The Florida Panther added Daniil Tarasov, 26, on June 26 from the Columbus Blue Jackets for a fifth-round pick in the just completed NHL Draft. Stillman, 22, is the 6-foot-1, 185-pound right shot winger who was a first-round pick (No. 29 overall) of the New Jersey Devils in 2021 and was traded last March to Pittsburgh as part of the Cody Glass deal. Stillman had three goals and nine points in 46 games with the New Jersey's Utica Devils AHL affiliate, and then one goal and three points in 19 games with Pittsburgh's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins AHL side. He's yet to play an NHL game. PuckPedia lists Stillman as a cap hit of $863,334 and in the final year of his deal. He'll be a restricted free agent at the end of the season. He's the son of former NHLer Cory Stillman and he played junior in the OHL with both the Sudbury Wolves and Peterborough Petes. Elite Prospects pre-draft scouting report on Stillman explained: 'Call it motor or energy or engagement or drive — Stillman has it. He is willing to go above and beyond, willing to play whatever role needed to the maximum of his ability to give his team the win. He knows when to go after to try and retrieve it, and will head to the best areas of the ice to get a scoring chance off.' Šilovs, of course, sparkled for the Canucks in the playoffs two springs ago when Demko was hurt. He had a 2.91 goals against average and .988 save percentage. In the regular season, his numbers with Vancouver are 3.13 goals against average and .880 save percentage in 19 games. In a press release Sunday, Allvin was quoted as saying: 'We would like thank Artūrs for everything he has done for the hockey club, including helping Abbotsford win the Calder Cup. We wanted to give him an opportunity elsewhere as we feel we are very well positioned in goal at the NHL, AHL and developmental level. Acquiring a future pick and depth forward will add to our organizational depth.' sewen@

Historic HBCU Expands Academic Playbook
Stillman College has long punched above its weight in the world of sports. From Olympic gold medalists to Super Bowl champs, the small HBCU in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, has churned out elite talent on the field and on the sidelines. Now, the Tigers are looking to own the front office, too. Starting in Fall 2025, Stillman College will offer a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management. This new degree program will provide students with a new pathway into coaching, athletic administration, and the multibillion-dollar sports industry. It's the 19th major offered by the institution and one that reflects the growing demand for career-ready HBCU graduates in sports-related fields. "Tuscaloosa is one of the most successful sports cities in Alabama," said Tim Williams, Chair of Stillman's Department of Kinesiology. "Adding a BS in Sport Management is a logical step based on the interests of our students, faculty, and colleagues in athletics." The new major will live at the intersection of academics and athletics. Offered through a collaboration between the School of Education's Department of Kinesiology and the School of Business, the program includes coursework in sport facility management, compliance, policy analysis, and even a deep dive into personal branding and NIL (Name, Image, Likeness)-a nod to the modern realities of college athletics. Stillman is also looking to leverage its local Alabama connections. They plan to offer internships and hands-on experiences through its athletic department and events, such as the 2026 HBCU Athletic Conference Basketball Championships, which Stillman will co-host with Visit Tuscaloosa. Dr. Carol Williams, Dean of the School of Business, said the program is about more than just sports. It's about building opportunities and growing enrollment. "It's been a truly rewarding experience to bring this program to life," she said. "Most inspiring is the promise it holds for expanding academic offerings and driving growth at Stillman College." Stillman joins a growing list of HBCUs stepping into the sports business space. Programs at institutions like Howard University, North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, and Florida A&M are already prepping students for careers in sports law, marketing, analytics, and agency work.
