Why Founders Must Hold Marketing To A Higher Standard

Ajay Gupta founded Stirista in 2009. As CEO, he oversees the data-driven performance marketing solutions provider's global growth. Founders love to say that marketing should drive revenue. But in my experience, very few hold their teams accountable to that. They lean on campaigns that look smart, agencies that sound strategic and metrics that feel important—but often none of it adds up to actual outcomes. Marketing should be about performance, not perception. It's about obsessing over data—not just impressions and click-through rates. It means tracking impact at every stage of the funnel, asking questions, learning what's working and what's not, and adjusting. This kind of marketing is the result of a mindset shift—one that has to start with leadership. Too often, founders delay making this shift until growth stalls or budgets tighten. By then, marketing has already drifted off course. The earlier you demand accountability, the easier it is to fix. Too many founders fall into the trap of thinking marketing is for someone else to worry about, and that it's about colors and copy and taglines and top 40-style videos. But marketing doesn't just build the brand. It builds the business. And if your marketing isn't doing that, it's failing. Here's how to shift your thinking: • Stop confusing activity with effectiveness. A flood of impressions and social engagement might feel like traction. But unless those campaigns are moving leads through the funnel and generating sales, they're just noise. • Stop measuring the wrong things. There's a time and place for top-of-funnel visibility. But if you don't know how those efforts convert downstream, you're flying blind. Ask for attribution. Push for conversion metrics. Get curious about what's actually working. • Stop holding marketing to a different standard. If your sales team had a bad quarter, you'd get in the weeds. But when a marketing campaign flops, most founders don't blink. That doesn't make sense. Your internal marketers, outside agencies and media partners should all be able to connect what they're doing to the pipeline or revenue. If they can't? Push harder. • Start asking better questions. Many founders know marketing is important—they just haven't been exposed to performance-driven marketing before. That's okay. You don't need to become a marketer. You just need to expect more from marketing. And that starts with clarity. Founders often rely on metrics that don't mean much—or worse, distract from what does. Just because a campaign was creative doesn't mean it was successful. Just because a deck looked good doesn't mean it drove results. Just because your chief marketing officer says, 'It's hard to measure brand,' doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Marketing is a business function. It should be treated like one. Be clear about what you expect. Build marketing key performance indicators into your executive dashboards. Look at weekly or monthly numbers. Ask what's driving them. Push your team to know. Smart marketing drives action. Period. New tools and platforms come and go. Channels shift. Buyer expectations change. What doesn't change is the need for measurable value—and that starts at the top. If you want better marketing, lead like you expect it.
