World Environment Day: Sand Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik's Message On Plastic Pollution

On World Environment Day today, renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a unique sculpture using plastic bottles on Puri beach. The message is about the perils of plastic pollution and through his art he hopes to inspire people to reduce plastic usage. This artwork has been created to raise awareness about plastic pollution gives a powerful message: "Beat plastic pollution." It aligns with the theme of this year's World Environment Day. Mr Pattnaik posted the image on his X account. #BeatPlasticPollution #WorldEnvironmentDay2025, My SandArt with installation of plastic bottles with message #BeatPlasticPollution, #Puri beach in #Odisha — Sudarsan Pattnaik (@sudarsansand) June 5, 2025 The attractive artwork not only highlights the urgent need for environmental protection, but also attracts the attention of visitors with its creativity and impressive presentation. World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5. On this day, offices, schools, the government, other organisations and local bodies hold events to raise awareness about environmental causes and involve local people to tackle plastic pollution and take action to protect the environment for a healthy life. Many Union ministers have urged people on their respective social media handles to put an end to plastic pollution and embrace sustainability while also planting more trees for a greener and cleaner future. Globally, an estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic waste leak into aquatic ecosystems each year, while microplastics accumulate in the soil from sewage and landfills, due to the use of plastics in agricultural products. Besides choking the planet, plastic pollution permeates even our bodies in the form of microplastics and poses several health risks. The United Nations General Assembly declared June 5 as World Environment Day during the Stockholm Conference in 1972. It was the first world conference to make environmental protection a major issue. The UNEP was established in the same year. World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time in 1973. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 under the theme 'Only One Earth'.

World Environment Day 2025: Know Date, History And Theme Of This Day

World Environment Day 2025: Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is observed across the globe to reinforce and sustain awareness around environmental action. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1973, it's the largest global platform for environmental outreach, engaging over 150 countries. Through campaigns, events, and initiatives, World Environment Day inspires individuals and communities to make changes, fostering a sense of urgency and addressing environmental challenges for a sustainable future. On World Environment Day, offices, schools, the government, other organisations and local bodies hold events to raise awareness about environmental causes and involve local people to tackle plastic pollution and take action to protect the environment for a healthy life. History of World Environment Day The United Nations General Assembly declared June 5 as World Environment Day during the Stockholm Conference in 1972. It was the first world conference to make environmental protection a major issue. The UNEP was established in the same year. World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time in 1973. The first World Environment Day was celebrated in 1973 under the theme 'Only One Earth'. According to the official website of the event, people from more than 150 countries participate in the United Nations International Day. Theme of World Environment Day 2025 World Environment Day shines a spotlight on pressing environmental challenges. Each year, a distinct theme is chosen, tackling issues like climate change, global warming, and deforestation. This year, the theme of World Environment Day is 'Putting an End to Plastic Pollution'. Plastic pollution worsens the triple threat facing our planet: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Each year, 11 million tons of plastic waste contaminate water ecosystems, while microplastics from sewage and landfills accumulate in soil, harming the environment. The annual cost of plastic pollution is estimated to be $300-600 billion. Ridding the planet of plastic pollution is an important contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including those on climate action, sustainable production and consumption, protection of seas and oceans and repairing ecosystems and retaining biodiversity. The Republic of Korea will host the global celebrations. Significance Of World Environment Day 2025 World Environment Day raises awareness, mobilises action, and promotes environmental sustainability. Through campaigns, events, and initiatives, the day inspires individuals and communities to make changes, fostering a sense of urgency and addressing environmental challenges for a sustainable future.

Multiple climate tipping points to be triggered as corals die, ice sheets collapse

It was after the Stockholm Conference in 1972 that governments around the world began to frame policies and treaties related to the current course of these policies is worrying, as it could lead to multiple 'tipping points,' as pointed out by scientists in a new research paper published in the journal Earth System a small change drives or tips the system into a new state, causing significant and long-term transformation, it is known as a 'tipping point.' These tipping points are irreversible. Scientists stress the need for more sustainable practices for a sustainable future. (Photo: Getty) advertisement The paper mentions that, on average, current policies could trigger the risk of 62% of tipping points, which could be reduced by practising more sustainable pathways, such as lower greenhouse gas analysing the influence of one tipping point on the other, a study done by the Universities of Exeter and Hamburg on Amazon rainforest dieback and permafrost thaw has found no interlinking controlling the effects of tipping points on the Earth, lead author of the study, Jakob Deutloff, said, 'The good news from our study is that the power to prevent climate tipping points is still in our hands.''And it appears that breaching tipping points within the Amazon and the permafrost region should not necessarily trigger others.'The study assessed tipping point probabilities in five different scenarios, known as shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs). advertisementWhile mentioning the dangers posed by tipping points, Professor Tim Lenton, from Exeter's Global Systems Institute, said, 'Climate tipping points could have devastating consequences for humanity.''It is clear that we are currently on a dangerous trajectory, with tipping points likely to be triggered unless we change course rapidly.'We need urgent global action – including the triggering of 'positive tipping points' in our societies and economies – to reach a safe and sustainable future.'Scientists stress the need for more sustainable practices for a sustainable future. This could be achieved with lower emissions of fossil fuels and by upgrading the current policies.
