Former golf pro arrested on suspicion of embezzling $150k from California golf club

Former golf pro arrested on suspicion of embezzling $150k from California golf club A former golf professional was arrested on suspicion of embezzling nearly $150,000 from Elkhorn Golf Club in Stockton, according to authorities. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said the investigation began in November 2024 after club officials reported a 'significant embezzlement.' Property crimes detectives said they found about $147,000 in missing cash deposits between 2022 and 2024 during the investigation. Detectives identified 44-year-old Mykal Parsons, who was employed as the golf professional at Elkhorn Golf Club when the funds were taken, as the suspect. An arrest warrant was issued for Parsons, and he was taken into custody by property crimes detectives May 8. He was booked into San Joaquin County Jail on charges of embezzlement and grand theft. Parsons was arrested the same day as Joseph Smith, former executive director of First Tee of San Joaquin, who is accused of embezzling $90,000 from the Stockton-based youth nonprofit. It's unclear if the two criminal cases are related. Sheriff's spokesperson Heather Brent was not able to confirm that as of May 23. Parsons was arraigned May 21 in San Joaquin County Superior Court. He is charged with embezzlement and grand theft. "This case represents a significant breach of trust, and our office is committed to holding those who exploit their positions for personal gain accountable," San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas said. "We will pursue justice to ensure the victims are heard and restitution is sought." Parsons is scheduled to appear at 8:30 a.m. June 11 in Department 8C of San Joaquin County Superior Court for further arraignment. Stockton-based rapper EBK Jaaybo arrested by Arkansas State Police on multiple charges

Stockton-based rapper EBK Jaaybo was arrested on May 18 by the Arkansas State Police on multiple felony charges. EBK Jaaybo, whose real name is Jaymani Gorman, was booked into the Pope County Detention Center on two counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of criminal use of a prohibited weapon, and one count of theft by receiving. The arrest marked Gorman's second run-in with the law in 2025. He was arrested by the Stockton Police Department on March 5 near Pixie Drive and Kingsley Avenue after a routine traffic stop for a vehicle leaving the area in violation of traffic laws. Gorman and four other adults in the vehicle were detained. He was arrested on suspicion of being a felon in possession of ammunition, possession of narcotic controlled substances and a parole violation. Previously, Gorman served a year in the San Joaquin County Jail for illegal gun possession. He was released from custody on Feb. 6, according to court records. Gorman rose to fame with his 2024 single 'Boogieman,' which appeared on Billboard's U.S. Bubbling Under Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. The song has garnered nearly 117 million streams on Spotify to date. Gorman's arrest came days after he was announced as a performer on YoungBoy Never Broke Again's first headlining tour. The Louisiana rapper, also known as NBA YoungBoy, was recently released from federal prison after serving 23 months for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The tour, which includes 27 U.S. cities, is scheduled to stop in Oakland on Sept. 12 and Sacramento on Sept. 13. Record reporter Hannah Workman covers news in Stockton and San Joaquin County. Stockton woman ignored animal care violations, State says

STOCKTON, Mo. – Ozarks First Investigates is uncovering additional information about the woman at the center of an animal cruelty investigation and rescue operation in Cedar County, where multiple dead animals, including skeletal remains of dogs, were found. On April 3, the Humane Society of Missouri rescued 42 dogs and nine cats in dire condition from Sarah Walborn's Stockton-based business, Wynter Knights Kennel and Grooming. Ozarks First Investigates dug through court documents revealing the State of Missouri took legal action against Walborn the month prior, in March 2025. Filings allege that since becoming a licensed breeder in February 2024, Walborn violated multiple provisions of the Missouri Animal Care Facilities Act and the Canine Cruelty Prevention Act. Records show violations include, but are not limited to: (1) Failed to provide adequate veterinarian care for several animals under her care (2) Failed to provide adequate shade for animals (3) Failed to provide adequate, clean, dry bedding material (4) Failed to remove excreta or food waste from enclosures daily (5) Failed to properly identify animals being held at the Facility, purchased, boarded, sheltered, or otherwise acquired, sold, released, given away or otherwise disposed of, or removed from the Facility for any reason (6) Failed to maintain required medical records on all animals brought (7) Failed to conduct daily observations of all animals to assess their health and well-being (8) Failed to provide adequate shelter structure for outdoor facilities housing animals USPS updates service standards, impacting mail delivery times The state claims that despite numerous inspections and citations from the Missouri Department of Agriculture, including four visits from June 2024 to February 2025, Walborn did not address the violations and continued to operate under substandard conditions. The April 3 discovery prompted action from the Animal Cruelty Task Force, which was supported by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the Missouri Attorney General's Office. Corgis, Alaskan Malamutes, and Doodle mixes were among the breeds rescued. 'The severe neglect these poor animals suffered is abhorrent and inexcusable,' said Kathy Warnick, President of the Humane Society of Missouri. 'We will do everything in our power to ensure the rescued dogs and cats are rehabilitated and given a second chance at a happier life.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Stockton City Council taps local engineering firm to handle design for Miracle Mile project

Stockton City Council has signed off on the next phase of planning for the long-awaited Miracle Mile Improvement Project. On March 18, the council unanimously approved $2.2 million for Stockton-based multidisciplinary design and engineering firm Siegfried Engineering Inc. to complete a design for the project. Siegfried, whose corporate office is located at 3428 Brookside Road, beat out seven companies that were interviewed for the gig. The project design is scheduled to be completed in fall 2026, according to Chad Reed, Stockton's director of public works. "Miracle Mile truly is the economic engine of the district, and dare I say, Stockton," said District 4 Councilmember Mario Enríquez, whose district encompasses the mile. The original idea of the Miracle Mile, defined as the portion of Pacific Avenue between Alpine Avenue and Harding Way, was developed by Joe Plecarpo in the early 1920s. The developer modeled the Miracle Mile after Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, a prominent 15-mile boulevard that connects five of Los Angeles's major business districts and Beverly Hills. Today, the Miracle Mile is home to commercial, educational, recreational, and residential land uses, from staples such as Al's Comic Shop and House of Shaw Café and Bakery to new favorites such as Comal Coffee and Ululani's Hawaiian Shave Ice. While the Miracle Mile is known for having a wide variety of specialty shops and services, pedestrian safety in the area has been a concern for the community over the years. In August 2021, 23-year-old Casey Bynum, a bus boy at Ave on the Mile, died after he was struck by a car while trying to walk across the street to take a photo. Former Assemblymember Carlos Villapudua (D-Stockton) was invited to attend Bynum's vigil, where he recalled hearing stories of others sharing their own experiences of being struck by cars on the Miracle Mile. The following year, Villapudua secured $20 million in funding through Assembly Bill (AB) 179 for pedestrian crossing upgrades, public safety improvements and the overall revitalization of the Miracle Mile. An ad hoc workgroup comprised of community members and members of Villapudua's office was formed in 2023. The group was tasked with presenting a conceptual design report to the city to show what community members hoped to see at the Miracle Mile in the future. The ad hoc workgroup produced a 274-page report outlining several recommendations, including creating opportunities for people to gather, enhancing the facades of businesses, incorporating civil improvements for crosswalk, sidewalk, and parking upgrades, and promoting active modes of transportation to and from the Miracle Mile. The group also asked for the historical style of the Miracle Mile to be maintained. Latest news, sports and more: Accessing local journalism is even easier with The Record app City staff found Siegfried to be "the most qualified company to deliver the goals that the ad hoc group identified," Reed said. The public works director noted that "although $20 million is a lot of money, it will not deliver the entire project as desired in the report." Siegfried is expected to hold at least eight public meetings and pursue additional grants. The firm will apply for four grants in 2025 and four grants in 2026, according to Reed. "It's a long-term project, but the fact that we're already getting the foundation set is a big deal," Enríquez said. Record reporter Hannah Workman covers news in Stockton and San Joaquin County.
