Marcus Stoinis wildly thumps his chest in front of Rohit Sharma after dismissing MI great during IPL 2025 Qualifier 2
After over two hours of delay due to rain, Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians began at 9:45 PM, much to the delight of the fans. And soon enough, the blockbuster clash delivered a fiery moment on the field as Marcus Stoinis removed veteran opener Rohit Sharma early in the Powerplay. Rohit had received a lucky reprieve in the second over of the match when Azmatullah Omarzai dropped him off Kyle Jamieson's delivery; however, the former MI captain wasn't too lucky the second time. Rohit looked to capitalise with a big hit against Stoinis as the Australian all-rounder banged one into the pitch. Rohit went for the pull, aiming to clear deep square leg, but mistimed it straight into the hands of Vijaykumar Vyshak in the deep. Stoinis reserved a rather fiery celebration after the dismissal, as he let out a roar and thumped his chest in celebration. The wicket came as a huge relief for PBKS, and particularly for Omarzai. Rohit departed for 8 off seven deliveries. The dismissal was relieving for Punjab, particularly because of Rohit's heroics after he was similarly dropped in MI's Eliminator match against Gujarat Titans. Rohit received double reprieves in the game and he punished the Titans for the lost chances, smashing a brilliant 81 off 50 deliveries which steered the side to a mammoth score of 228/5. MI eventually registered a 20-run win, with Rohit being named the Player of the Match. The toss, which took place at its scheduled time of 7 PM, saw Shreyas Iyer opting to bat under overcast conditions. There was no rain forecast, however, and the umpires and players were ready to take the field when sudden drizzle hit the stadium. Relentless rains meant the fans had to wait for over two hours for the action to begin in Ahmedabad. The winner of the match meets Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the same venue on Tuesday; RCB defeated Punjab Kings by 8 wickets in a thumping performance on Wednesday to book a place in the title clash.

"Committing Suicide": Sunil Gavaskar Slams PBKS Star For Failure vs RCB In IPL 2025 Qualifier 1
It was a pathetic batting performance from Punjab Kings during the Qualifier 1 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 in Mullanpur on Thursday. After getting an invitation to bat first by Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the Shreyas Iyer-led side was bundled out for a paltry 101 runs as none of its batters could take his innings deep. Playing rash shots cost PBKS big and the side ended up losing the game by 8 wickets. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar showed no mercy while commenting on the batting of PBKS, especially Marcus Stoinis. For the Iyer-led team, Stoinis was the top-scorer with 26 runs off 17 balls but he too became a victim of poor shot selection. Stoinis fell as the last recognised batter for PBKS and Gavaskar didn't mince his words while slamming him. RCB spinner Suyash Sharma bowled a googly and Stoinis tried to play a horrible slog-sweep and missed the ball completely. The ball rattled his stumps. "This is unbelievable. This is committing suicide, isn't it?" said Gavaskar said on-air while reacting to the dismissal. Same was the story of other PBKS batters as well. They too did wild swinging and ended up losing their wickets. PBKS captain Shreyas was quite honest in admitting that the batters failed in the game, which led to the side's downfall. "We've got to work on our batting, especially on this wicket. In all the games we have played here, there has been some variable bounce. We can't give such reasons because we are professionals at the end of the day, and we have to bat according to the situation, and we have to live up to it. We have lost the battle but not the war," he said after the game. "Not a day to forget, but got to go back to the drawing board. We lost a lot of wickets (in the first innings). There's a lot to go back and study on. I am not doubting on my decisions to be honest. Whatever we did in terms of planning, outside of the ground, or whatever (planning) we did, I think it was on point. Just that we couldn't execute it on the field, can't even blame the bowlers, as it was a low total to defend," the PBKS captain added. PBKS will get another chance to make it to the final as they will face the winner of the Eliminator game between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians that is set to take place on Friday.

Sunil Gavaskar Tears Into Shreyas Iyer Amid Punjab Kings' Batting Collapse vs RCB: "A Nothing Shot..."
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar questioned the approach of Punjab Kings (PBKS) batters during Qualifier 1 of IPL 2025 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Thursday. In the battle of the top two teams from the league phase, RCB sparked a PBKS batting collapse at Mullanpur. Josh Hazlewood (3/21) and Suyash Sharma (3/17) shared six wickets between them as RCB rolled over PBKS for 101. Marcus Stoinis top-scored for PBKS 17-ball 26 while Azmatullah Omarzai (18) and Prabhsimran Singh were the other batters to register double-figure scores. After one of the dismissals, Gavaskar blasted PBKS batters on-air for their shot selection, labelling their approach as suicidal. "That's like committing suicide," Gavaskar was heard as saying. Gavaskar also blasted PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer after he was dismissed for a three-ball two in the 4th over. Shreyas went for a wild slog off Hazlewood on his third ball of the innings but was caught behind. "This is not a good shot. This is a nothing shot. One can understand if you are trying to play it over long off, but this is just a wild swing. Two wickets down, just the fourth over going," he said Stoinis was clean bowled by Suyash on the third ball of the 11th over. It was a tossed up delivery on off and Stoinis tried to hack it with the turn over midwicket. However, the ball spun sharply and beat Stoinis' inside edge, going on to rattle the stumps. On a surface where hitting through the line proved to be tricky, the all-out attack strategy of the Punjab Kings contributed to their downfall after they were put in to bat. Their innings lasted just 14.1 overs. Musheer Khan, making an unexpected IPL debut as an impact player with wickets falling in heap, too fell to a sweep off Suyash, who got his googly to turn sharply. 'Disappointed we lost, need to be 100 per cent switched on for next game against Mumbai Indians,': Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting
Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 25 (ANI): The Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS) have already qualified for the playoffs, but faced a hurdle on their road to the top two slots on Saturday as they lost to Delhi Capitals by six wickets. Skipper Shreyas Iyer scored 53 run in 34 balls, while late heroics from Aussie allrounder Marcus Stoinis, who scored an unbeaten 44 run off 16 balls, helped the Kings to a total of 206/8 in 20 overs, according to a release from PBKS. On the solid batting track at Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, the Delhi Capitals were more than up for the challenge to chase down the total and managed to win the match with three balls to spare. Speaking after the match, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting addressed the dressing room and asked the team to focus on the upcoming game against the Mumbai Kings on Monday. 'That's just a really good example of the game of T20 cricket tonight. If you are just a little bit off in any facet of the game, quite often you are going to lose. I reckon if you look back tonight, we are probably a little bit off on all three facets of our cricket,' Ponting made an honest assessment of the team's performance in the dressing room, as quoted from a release by PBKS. Ponting praised Iyer and Stoinis for their batting display and also highlighted Harpreet Brar for his two wickets on a difficult bowling surface. 'Stoinis got us with some magnificent hitting at the end, got us to a total that we thought was probably still going to be good enough. Shreyas played a good captain's knock and steadied the ship. Harpreet Brar, I want to mention your bowling today, I thought you were outstanding again, picked up the two wickets. Arshdeep, I thought you started really well as well, made the first couple of overs, ' he said. 'We probably didn't get the partnerships, we probably didn't have someone go on, get a big score,' he noted. The former Aussie international also expressed disappointment over the result and asked the team to switch on before the upcoming game on Monday. 'If we look back, I am disappointed that we lost, but I actually think that gives us a chance to sit back and reset now and get ready to go again,' he said. 'Forget about this game tomorrow, but make sure when we turn up for Monday that we are 100% switched on and ready to go,' he said. Stoinis further stressed on the importance of the upcoming match and said, 'We have obviously qualified for the finals and we are trying to get that top 2 spot, so unfortunately tonight might hurt that little bit. We are playing really good cricket. Different guy are stepping up at different times and a lot is riding on where we finish on the table,' he signed off. Punjab Kings will next face off against Mumbai Indians on May 26 at Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur. (ANI)
