Demonstrate for Democracy plans 'People's Filibuster' against Trump admin in Murfreesboro
Demonstrate for Democracy organizers will hold a 25-hour "People's Filibuster" to protest President Donald Trump's administration in Murfreesboro May 1. The event will start at 7 a.m. May 1 and end by 8 a.m. May 2 on the public sidewalk along Medical Center Parkway, organizer Lora Hortert of Murfreesboro said. The demonstrators will be near the Murfreesboro office of Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais located in the Fountains at Gateway office, residential, restaurant and retail development, Hortert said. "We strongly feel this president is violating the U.S. Constitution," Hortert said. 'I think it's asinine': Federal job cuts concern VA Murfreesboro patient, park service visitor at Stones River National Battlefield and cemetery The demonstrators have concerns about the constitutionality of deportations of immigrants who are "entitled to due process," Hortert said. Courts should determine if immigrants can be lawfully removed or permitted to stay legally in the United States of America, suggested Hortert, who has worked as a 17-year paralegal and earned a bachelor's degree in political science at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. Previous demonstration: Protesters of Trump plan Murfreesboro 'Stop the Coup March for Democracy' April 5 The demonstrators also want DesJarlais, serving District 4 including Rutherford County, and other members of Congress to use their separation of powers authority to challenge the president. "They have the power to check him," Hortert said. The Daily News Journal reached out to DeJarlais office's spokesman Alex Swisher Monday for comment. DesJarlais offered a recent comment to The Daily News Journal pertaining to the Trump administration decision to revoke visas of six MTSU international students. 'President Trump is fulfilling his promise to fix our broken immigration system," DesJarlais said. "There are a myriad of reasons why a student visa may be canceled, and the American people hired President Trump to enforce the law − something the previous administration did not do.' Immigration issues: MTSU student body president, US Rep. DesJarlais speak out about 6 student visas being revoked Participants of the People's Filibuster will start with a couple of short speeches, Hortert said, before reading out loud the nation's founding documents. Readings will include the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and other amendments to the Constitution, the oath of office of Congress members, and the Federalist Papers that are essays written by three of the leaders who joined others in crafting the Constitution: James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay. The idea for the People's Filibuster came from the recent 25-hour filibuster of U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, in protest of Trump's administration, Hortert said. MTSU Constitution Day: Former VP Mike Pence defends certifying Biden's victory in 2020 Hortert has about 30 participants committed to read in the People's Filibuster so far. "We're hoping to get up to 50," Hortert said. Those interested can email demonstratedemocracy@ or call Hortert at 615-995-9845. Protesters of Trump plan Murfreesboro 'Stop the Coup March for Democracy' April 5
Rutherford County residents concerned with recent decisions by Republican President Donald Trump will hold a rescheduled "Stop the Coup March for Democracy" April 5 in Murfreesboro. The march is organized by Murfreesboro Indivisible and will follow the county Democratic Party's convention, or reorganization meeting on Saturday. The recent March 15 storms led to cancelling plans for the previous peaceful march downtown. The rescheduled protest march will follow the Rutherford County Democratic Party's reorganization meeting at 10:30 a.m. April 5 at McFadden Community Center, 211 Bridge Ave. The rescheduled march by Murfreesboro Indivisible organizers will start at 12:30 p.m. March participants will carry signs around the Public Square and the Rutherford County Courthouse to let the public know that there is opposition to the Trump administration's decisions, said event coordinator Chloe Cerutti, a Murfreesboro resident who's a Democrat. "Democrats need to be heard," Cerutti said. "We need to establish a two-party political system in Tennessee. We hope to do that. We need to hear from all voices of what this administration is doing with the dismantling of our federal government." The protesters after the march plan to meet next from 2-4 p.m. at 615 District restaurant, 1950 S. Church, Cerutti said. Local politics: Rutherford GOP state lawmakers will be absent from League of Women Voters candidate forum The local Democrats seek to compete in a Rutherford County that's been dominated by Republicans since 2010. The GOP leadership includes Ransom Jones, chairman of the Rutherford County Election Commission. "If you're a Democrat, you are going to be opposed to everything Trump does good, bad or indifferent," Jones said. Jones also contends that Democrats are in "denial about the accumulation of national debt and its dire consequences if not reined in." Republican incumbents win reelection: All 6 GOP state lawmakers for Rutherford up for election keep their TN General Assembly seats Although the previous march plan was rescheduled, about three dozen protesters with signs March 15 gathered at the High Society on West Main Street near the courthouse. Cerutti spoke to the audience along with Victoria Isabel Broderick, the Democratic Party's 2024 nominee who lost to incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais; Matt Fee, a candidate to be the Democratic Party chair; and Steven Phelps, a board member with Americans United for Separation of Church and State. First Amendment issue: Divided Rutherford County Library System Board bans transgender books 'to protect children' Judy Whitehill, an appointed Democrat serving on the Rutherford County Election Commission, held a protest sign saying, "Educate all children." Whitehill is a retired teacher for over 30 years, former librarian at Murfreesboro's Northfield Elementary School and a past four-year president of the Tennessee Teachers Association. "As a retired teacher, I'm really upset that we have anyone in our Tennessee General Assembly who would sponsor a bill that would say that a child cannot be registered to enroll simply because of the documentation or lack of their parents," Whitehill said. "Our country was built on a foundation of public education for all, and to think that we are not going to allow 5-year-olds through high school to register to go to school is just the biggest sin I can think of." Republicans control school board: Democrat fears new GOP majority county school board may mean book banning Whitehill said she hopes to appeal to Christians about rejecting the proposed bill to deny education to children of immigrant families without documentation for legal status. "If that's the case, they need to be talking to their legislators to say this is not what people do to be kind and nice and inclusive," Whitehill said. Election office with Fox News in 2022? Democrats want the channel changed Democrats attending the local party's convention at 10:30 a.m. April 5 at McFadden Community Center will elect a chair, three vice chairs, a secretary, a treasurer and 20 executive committee members from all areas of the county for a two-year term, according to a press release from Matt Ferry, the party's reorganization chair. All Democrats who are registered voters of Rutherford County are urged to attend to discussthe party's agenda and events for 2025-2026. The voting delegation also will adopt the local county party bylaws.
