Wildfire smoke brings poor air quality back to West Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An air quality alert has been issued for the Lower Peninsula through noon on Friday as smoke from Canadian wildfires lingers. On Thursday morning, the Air Quality Index reached unhealthy levels across much of the state with the smoke thick enough at the surface to contribute to reduced visibility. You may get an occasional campfire scent along with added congestion and eye irritation due to the smoke. During this time, strenuous outdoor activity is discouraged, especially for sensitive groups such as those with asthma or heart disease who could experience a greater impact. Young children and the elderly are more susceptible to the effects of poor air quality. Limiting outdoor burning and sources of air pollution is helpful. While the air quality alert is set to expire at noon on Friday, it's possible the smoke may stick around into the weekend with no significant forcing or pattern change coming in the next few days to help push the smoke away. Wisconsin angler finds 102-year-old shipwreck on Lake Michigan

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Historians in Wisconsin say an angler helped uncover a tugboat that sunk in 1923 on Lake Michigan. The Wisconsin Historical Society says the has been found north of the breakwater in Manitowoc, less than 10 feet below the water's surface. 132-year-old shipwreck discovered in Lake Superior 'These kinds of discoveries are always so exciting because it allows a piece of lost history to resurface,' WHS maritime archaeologist Tamara Thomsen . 'It sat there for over a hundred years and then came back on our radar completely by chance.' The ship was found by Christopher Thuss, the step-grandson of 'Shipwreck Suzze' Johnson. According to the WHS, Johnson hunted shipwrecks as a hobby, using light aircraft and even a powered parachute. In 2015, she reportedly discovered three different shipwrecks in three days on Lake Michigan. The J.C. Ames was built in 1881. The 160-foot wooden tugboat was designed to transport lumber but ultimately hauled several types of cargo, including railcars. It was eventually dismantled and intentionally sunk in 1923, the common practice of the time. The J.C. Ames is located within the boundary of the . Because of its depth and location, the WHS expects it will become a popular place for kayakers and snorkelers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Sunny streak coming to an end

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Sunshine dominated across West Michigan this past weekend, which was ideal for Tulip Time, the Amway River Bank Run and Mother's Day. With abundant sunshine this past weekend, it was likely the sunniest since March 8 to 9, where 90% sunshine was recorded. The first weekend in May and all weekends in April brought rain showers and mostly cloudy conditions. The official percentage of sunshine this past weekend was not recorded. As of May 1, the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids stopped collecting sunshine data. The Grand Rapids office was only one of the few that continued to track daily minutes of sunshine after it stopped becoming a requirement in 2009. Going forward, it will be unclear how the sunshine stacks up day to day. Looking at last year, May through July saw a mix of clouds and sunshine. May averaged 56% sunshine while June was slightly cloudier with 53% sunshine. Soak up the sunshine on Monday, though. The week ahead will be significantly more active with rain chances returning Monday night and carrying through Friday. A few thunderstorms may develop in the mix, but there is no severe threat for the first half of the week. If a strong storm were to develop, it would likely be on Thursday night into Friday morning. Friday presents a chance of passing morning showers followed by late-day clearing. It will also be the coolest day of the weekend with afternoon highs in the middle to upper 50s.
