Baroness Chapman: UK Support for Autonomy Plan Is a ‘Key Moment' in Rabat-London Ties

She recalled British Foreign Secretary David Lammy's visit to Morocco, saying that the trip 'was marked by a key moment, namely the UK's support for Morocco's autonomy proposal.' During the visit, Lammy conveyed his country's newfound position on Western Sahara, recognizing the autonomy initiative as the most credible and pragmatic basis for achieving a lasting solution to the dispute. Baroness Chapman made her remarks in a speech delivered on behalf of the UK government at a reception hosted by the Moroccan Embassy in London to mark the Throne Day. Baroness Chapman, who also oversees relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized that Lammy's visit, held as part of the Strategic Dialogue, 'opened a new chapter in our relationship, reflecting our shared commitment to further strengthen our partnership.' She welcomed the signing of new agreements that expand economic opportunities for both countries, highlighting the UK's support for Morocco's ambitious infrastructure projects in preparation for hosting the 2030 World Cup. Morocco and the UK are looking ahead together, with the aim of tackling common challenges and seizing new opportunities, she added, noting that the partnership continues to deepen, with London and Rabat 'firmly focused' on building a safer and more prosperous future for both peoples. 'Our two countries enjoy one of the strongest partnerships and one of the oldest diplomatic relations in the world, dating back more than 800 years,' she said, stressing that this partnership continues to grow under the leadership of His Majesty the King 'as we work together to develop our economies, promote regional stability, and strengthen global security.' Baroness Chapman also stressed 'the crucial role' played by the Moroccan community in the UK, contributing to the enrichment of British culture and economy and helping build 'our shared future.' She also said that the celebration of Throne Day is 'a reminder of these enduring ties and the values' shared by Morocco and the United Kingdom, extending, on behalf of the British Government, warm congratulations to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people. The reception, held in a grand London palace, was attended by numerous prominent figures, including Lord Coaker, Minister of State for Defense, and Ben Coleman, the UK Prime Minister's Trade Envoy to Morocco and West Africa. He also reiterated Egypt's interest in resuming the U.S.-Egypt Strategic Dialogue on a regular basis. Both ministers explored avenues to boost economic, trade, and investment cooperation. In this regard, Abdelatty praised the outcomes of the Egypt-U.S. Business Forum held in Cairo last May, which saw the participation of more than 50 American companies, including 12 firms entering the Egyptian market for the first time. This, he noted, reflects Egypt's commitment to attracting foreign investment and enhancing economic partnerships with the United States. Furthermore, the two ministers emphasized the importance of continuing coordination to convene a new round of meetings for the Joint Economic Commission and another edition of the Egypt-U.S. Business Forum to expand bilateral economic cooperation. The talks included extensive discussions on urgent regional developments, foremost among them the catastrophic situation in Gaza, the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, and ongoing challenges in Libya, Syria, Lebanon, and Africa, as well as concerns related to Egypt's water security. On the Palestinian issue, Abdelatty reiterated the necessity of reaching a permanent ceasefire agreement in Gaza. He emphasized the importance of ending bloodshed and ensuring the sustained flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged territory, which is suffering from a deliberate Israeli starvation policy. He also called for urgent action to address the worsening humanitarian crisis and stressed the need to revive a political horizon for a just and sustainable resolution to the Palestinian cause. This includes restoring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, particularly their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. In addition, Abdelatty expressed hope for continued close collaboration with the U.S. administration to lay the foundation for comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East that serves all peoples of the region. Regarding Sudan, the two ministers discussed the importance of securing a ceasefire and facilitating humanitarian access. In the same context, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's support for Sudanese state institutions, emphasizing respect for Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. As for Egypt's water security, Abdelatty conveyed Egypt's concerns over the Nile River issue and reaffirmed Egypt's position that any agreement must comply with international law governing transboundary water resources. He stressed the urgent need to reach a legally binding agreement regulating the operation of the Ethiopian dam and rejected Ethiopia's unilateral actions, which violate international norms. Moreover, FM affirmed that Egypt will take all measures permitted under international law to safeguard its water security. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

China's top diplomat visits Europe pitching closer ties in ‘volatile' world

China's foreign minister Wang Yi is expected to meet with his EU counterpart, Kaja Kallas in Brussels for a 'high-level strategic dialogue'. (EPA IMages pic) BEIJING : China's top diplomat heads to Europe today for a visit which Beijing said will highlight ties as an 'anchor of stability' in a world in turmoil. Wang Yi's tour will take him to the EU's headquarters in Brussels as well as France and Germany as China seeks to improve relations with the bloc as a counterweight to superpower rival the US. However, deep frictions remain over the economy, including a yawning trade deficit of US$357.1 billion between China and the EU – and Beijing's close ties with Russia despite Moscow's war in Ukraine. 'The world is undergoing an accelerated evolution of a century-old change, with unilateralism, protectionism and bullying behaviour becoming rampant,' Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Friday – a thinly veiled swipe against the US under President Donald Trump. In that context, Guo said, Beijing and the European bloc must 'keep the world peaceful and stable, safeguard multilateralism, free trade, international rules, fairness and justice, and act firmly as anchors of stability and constructive forces in a volatile world'. Wang will meet with his EU counterpart, Kaja Kallas, at the bloc's headquarters in Brussels for 'high-level strategic dialogue'. In Germany, he will hold talks with foreign minister Johann Wadephul on diplomacy and security – his first visit since Berlin's new conservative-led government took power in May. In France, Wang will meet minister for Europe and foreign affairs Jean-Noel Barrot, who visited China in March. The war in Ukraine will likely be high on the agenda, with European leaders having been forthright in condemning what they say is Beijing's backing for Moscow. China has portrayed itself as a neutral party in Russia's more than three-year war with Ukraine. However, Western governments say Beijing's close ties have given Moscow crucial economic and diplomatic support, and they have urged China to do more to press Russia to end the war. Trade tensions Ties between Europe and China have also strained in recent years as the EU seeks to get tougher on what it says are unfair economic practices by Beijing. After the European bloc placed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle (EV) imports, China retaliated with its own duties, including on French cognac. An agreement on cognac has been reached with Beijing but not formally approved by the Chinese commerce ministry, a source in the French economy ministry told AFP. The source said finalisation was partially linked with the EU's ongoing negotiations over EVs. Tensions flared this month after the EU banned Chinese firms from government medical device purchases worth more than €5 million (US$5.8 million), in retaliation for limits Beijing places on access to its own market. The latest salvo in trade tensions between the 27-nation bloc and China covered a wide range of healthcare supplies, from surgical masks to X-ray machines, that represent a market worth €150 billion in the EU. In response, China accused the EU of 'double standards'. Another sticking point has been rare earths. Beijing has since April required licences to export these strategic materials from China, which accounts for almost two-thirds of rare earth mining production and 92% of global refined output, according to the International Energy Agency. The metals are used in a wide variety of products, including electric car batteries, and there has been criticism from industries about the way China's licences have been issued. China has proposed establishing a 'green channel' to ease the export of rare earths to the EU, its commerce ministry said this month.
