Man in his 90's donates War of 1812 artifact to Stratford museum

(CTV News/Ashley Bacon) An ammunition holder believed to be from the 1700s has a new home at the Stratford Perth Museum after a man says he found it more than eight decades ago. Gordon Willder was only 15-years-old in 1945, when he and his grandfather began renovating their home on Cobourg street in Stratford. 'That was a long time ago, and I've kept it ever since,' said Willder, referring to what the pair found that day. When an interior wall came down, it unearthed a treasure. 'Out popped this ammunition pouch and it was buried in sawdust, which was installation in those days,' said Willder, who is now 95-years-old. (CTV News/Ashley Bacon) For the last 80 years, the ammunition belt has been carefully kept at the Willder home, according to Willder's daughter Debora Reid. 'It was just part of the decoration. Mom and dad decorated their house so lovely, and it was just part of it,' said Reid. 'I never really thought much of it.' Willder believes after all these years, it's time to pass it on. 'I didn't want money for it. I just wanted to give it to verify the history of it and that's hopefully what's happening here in this museum,' Willder said. He is now donating the artifact to the Stratford Perth Museum. 'This wonderful item that came to the museum on Monday is a cartridge holder or an ammo pouch that contained shot and balls,' explained. Kelly McIntosh, general manager at the museum. 'Our collections manager has dated it back to not only the War of 1812 but earlier to the 1700s.' The belt is believed to have been used in the War of 1812 and with the local militia before it somehow ended up in a wall. 'What we can determine is that whoever had this at the house, at that time in 1945 - which was 146 Cobourg Street, that they probably brought it here,' said McIntosh. 'I'm glad the museum here has verified that, and I'm happy about it. I can sleep better now,' added Willder. Museum staff said they are grateful for the donation. 'It's probably one of the artifacts in the best shape that we have dating back that early. And it's great because we already have an exhibit about this history, and we'll be able to tell it's story,' said McIntosh. After being a treasured family heirloom for so long, it will be another few weeks before the public can view it on display at the Stratford Perth Museum.

Justin Bieber is mourning the death of his grandfather Bruce Dale. The Sorry singer penned a touching tribute via Instagram to the late patriarch, who died on Thursday, according to an online obituary. 'Papa, I always took all ur money lol. I remember u specifically telling me, gramma gave u an allowance of 20 dollars for the WEEK!' Bieber recalled in his post Saturday. 'I would always convince you to spend on snacks at the hockey game on Friday nights. Reluctantly you always gave it to me,' he added alongside a throwback photo of the duo taken in 2009. 'Corn nuts, skittles, gum balls, chuck a puck, slush puppies.' Bieber, 31, continued, 'Shout out to the jr b referees Beatty, Fagon, Flanagan lmfao. For enduring all of my grandpa's heckling for all of your horrible referee calls lmfao. My grandpa wasn't shy in letting them know that they were being pieces of sh**s.' The Lonely singer, whose mental health has sparked concern in recent months, also noted, 'I can't wait to see u again soon in heaven.' He added, 'Until then I know ur watching down probly still heckling Beatty or Fagon for missing that cross check call in the corner there lmfao.' 'I will miss u. I will ache. And I'll sit and let myself remember all of the wonderful times we've had,' Bieber concluded the heartfelt post. Dale's obituary states he died 'peacefully' at the Rotary Hospice Stratford Perth. He's survived by his four children: Candie Toper, Chris Mallette, Chris Dale and Pattie Mallette — Bieber's mother. The Grammy winner and his wife, Hailey Bieber, are listed among Dale's three grandchildren. Their son, Jack Blues Bieber, whom they welcomed in August 2024, was also named with Dale's great grandchildren. Dale spoke about his relationship with his famous grandson in an emotional February 2018 interview at the Steps to Stardom Exhibition at Stratford Perth Museum in Bieber's hometown where he recalled going to the singer's first show. 'I don't know,' he answered when asked what makes him emotional about Bieber. 'It just happens. I can sit and talk with anybody about anything, but when it comes to talking about him, I just get emotional.' Dale's death comes just days after the Beauty and a Beat singer, who made headlines after lashing out at paparazzi in recent weeks, declared he won't be bullied out of Hollywood. 'Everyone telling me to move from La,' he said. 'U think I'm gonna get bullied to leave where my influence is most needed? How can we make a change if we run away from the darkness?' Bieber shared that he's 'been caught up in the transactional nature of Hollywood,' describing the vague admission as 'embarrassing.'
