‘Moving' and beyond: how K-dramas make superpowers hit harder

'The Atypical Family' The Bok family has gone from atypical to all too typical as they slowly begin losing the superpowers that once set them apart: crippling depression has robbed Bok Gwi-ju (Jang Ki-yong) of his ability to travel back in time; insomnia has clouded Bok Man-heum's (Go Doo-shim) visions of the future; and low self-esteem has quite literally grounded Bok Dong-hee (Claudia Kim), who once had the power to fly. Meanwhile, Gwi-ju's teen daughter Bok I-na (Park So-yi) has yet to manifest any special abilities. Enter mysterious and charming Do Da-hae (Chun Woo-hee), who seems to have arrived just in time to save the day. But her timing is dubious and her motives unclear. Is she really who she says she is? And does she truly have the Bok family's best interest at heart? 'The Uncanny Counter' Seasons 1 and 2 Counters are humans granted supernatural powers by spirits in the afterlife, tasked with hunting down vengeful spirits that have escaped to the human world to prey on the living. The first season of this superhero K-drama follows So Mun's (Jo Byeong-kyu) journey as the newest—and most powerful—Counter. Still learning the ropes, he struggles to find his place within the team and master his powers. Fortunately, Counters Ga Mo-tak (Yoo Jun-sang), Kim Sejong (Do Ha-na) and Chu Mae-ok (Yeom Hye-ran) welcome him like family, for the most part, and train him well, helping him unleash his full potential. Season 2 introduces Na Jeok-bong (Yoo In-soo), a brand-new recruit, and even more formidable foes. The stakes are higher and the sacrifices are greater. But the Counters continue to lean on one another to protect the living—and each other. When she touches the rear end of animals and people, she sees into their past. Her powers may have led to awkward misunderstandings and embarrassing encounters, but as the town vet, her special ability has proved useful in helping diagnose and treat her patients. Her unusual gift also draws her into an unlikely partnership with detective Moon Jang-yeol (Lee Min-ki), as they work together to solve petty crimes—and catch a serial killer preying on the town's young women. 'He Is Psychometric' It may not be a traditional superhero K-drama, but He Is Psychometric features a protagonist with special powers: Lee Ahn (Park Jinyoung) has the ability to read the memories of people and objects through touch. Burdened by a traumatic past and still learning to control his gift, he crosses paths with Yoon Jae-in (Shin Ye-eun), a sharp-witted aspiring police officer with secrets of her own. Together, they form an unlikely partnership, using his psychometry and her intuition to solve crimes and uncover the truth behind their shared past. 'Strong Girl Bong-soon' and 'Strong Girl Nam-soon' The Strong Girl franchise consists of the original Strong Girl Bong-soon and its spinoff, Strong Girl Nam-soon —two superhero K-dramas centred on women endowed with extraordinary strength, a power passed down through the matriarchal line. In Bong-soon , the titular heroine struggles with her desire to lead an ordinary life and is initially reluctant to embrace her powers. Over time, however, she learns to harness her strength and step into her identity. Nam-soon, by contrast, is bright and unreserved about her abilities. Lost in Mongolia as a child and returning to South Korea as an adult, she uses her gift freely in her quest to reunite with her long-lost family. 'Cashero' Above Lee Jun-ho returns in the upcoming 'Cashero'. (Photo: Netflix) In this upcoming superhero K-drama, set to premiere on Netflix later this year, Lee Jun-ho stars as Kang Sang-woong, a humble civil servant whose super strength depends on how much money he has. He's joined by Bang Eun-mi (Kim Hyang-gi), whose telekinetic powers are fuelled by her calorie intake, and Byeon Ho-in (Kim Byung-chul), a lawyer whose abilities are activated by alcohol. Together, they must protect the world from a villainous organisation hunting down people who, like them, possess superpowers. 'The WONDERfools' Above Park Eun-bin and Cha Eun-woo team up in the upcoming 'The Wonderfools'. (Photo: IMDb) Reportedly inspired by the legendary Stan Lee's superhero stories, the upcoming The WONDERfools might just be the closest a K-drama has come to capturing that classic Hollywood superhero spirit. Park Eun-bin stars as Eun Chae-ni, who, along with her neighbours Son Kyeong-hoon (Choi Dae-hoon) and Kang Ro-bin (Im Sung-jae), suddenly develops superpowers. Cha Eun-woo plays a mysterious civil servant who joins forces with the unlikely trio to investigate a series of disappearances in their city and take on the sinister Ha Won-do (Son Hyun-joo).

Go Min Si's bullying claims stir debate: From Seo Ye Ji to Ji Soo, other K-drama stars who faced similar allegations

School bullying allegations have become a recurring storm in South Korea's entertainment world, pulling numerous public figures—from actors to athletes—into controversy. The public tends to take a hard line, with a majority believing accused celebrities should step away from the spotlight until investigations are complete. But not all accusations stand the test of time—some have been exaggerated or entirely fabricated, often surfacing just as a star is rising. Actress Go Min Si is the latest name to be caught in this crossfire. Fresh off the success of Tastefully Yours, her breakout drama that topped Netflix charts in 17 countries, Go's ascent was abruptly clouded by a damaging online post. As the debate unfolds about Go Min Si, let's have a look at other K-drama actors who also faced similar allegations. Go Min Si Shared on May 26, an anonymous message accused Go Min Si of bullying during middle school—alleging extortion, verbal harassment, and the exclusion of classmates, including those with disabilities. It also criticized her for allegedly showing no remorse, claiming she dismissed the incidents as "minor mistakes." In response, her agency Mystic Story firmly denied the claims, calling them "completely unfounded" and affirming their trust in the actress. Still, the backlash has been split—while some demand accountability, others question the timing and motives behind the accusations. Ji Soo The actor, best known for his roles in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Strong Girl Bong-soon, was effectively blacklisted from the South Korean entertainment industry in 2021 following serious school bullying allegations. Online posts accused him of abusive behavior during both middle and high school, including claims of physical assault and sexual harassment. While Ji Soo issued a public apology for the bullying, he firmly denied the harassment allegations and stated he would take legal action against those spreading false claims. After a four-year hiatus, during which he completed his mandatory military service and reportedly reconciled with some of the accusers, Ji Soo is now preparing for a comeback. He is turning his focus to international projects as he attempts to rebuild his career. Song Ha-yoon Kim Mi-sun, better known by the stage name Song Ha-yoon gained everyone's attention and love for her evil acting in the hit K-drama Marry My Husband. However, post the hit show, she found herself at the center of controversy after school bullying allegations surfaced on April 1, 2024. An anonymous informant claimed that back in 2004, during their high school years, Song physically assaulted him—alleging she slapped him repeatedly for 90 minutes. Initially, Song's agency, King Kong by Starship, firmly denied the accusations. However, as public scrutiny mounted, the agency later acknowledged that she had been forcibly transferred to another school "in relation to a school violence incident." While the agency did not confirm the specifics of Song's involvement, they conceded that disciplinary action had been taken. Kim Hieora Best known for her chilling portrayal of Lee Sa-ra—a primary perpetrator of collective bullying—in Netflix's hit 2022 drama The Glory, the actress found herself facing real-life allegations of similar behavior. As her fame grew, an anonymous classmate alleged she had been part of the notorious "iljin group" during middle school, claiming she took part in bullying, including stealing money from juniors. While Kim initially denied being in any such group or engaging in bullying, she later reflected on her past, expressing shame and acknowledging the complexities of bullying. Seo Ye Ji After rising to fame with the 2020 K-drama It's Okay Not to Be Okay alongside the now embroiled in his own controversy Kim Soo Hyun, actress Seo Ye Ji came under intense scrutiny. A netizen claiming to be a former classmate accused her of violent behavior and bullying during her school years, while another alleged she targeted peers she disliked with physical aggression. These weren't new claims—similar accusations had first appeared in 2014, with one victim alleging she was known for bullying and stealing money from classmates. At the time, she was still a rookie actress, and the claims drew little attention. However, the renewed controversy led to her withdrawing from projects and maintaining a low profile for a long time. Jeon Jong-seo While Jeon Jong Seo was enjoying the success of her drama Wedding Impossible, she found herself entangled in controversy as allegations of school bullying surfaced. A post on an online platform accused an actress referred to as "J" of being involved in school violence, leading many to speculate that the actress in question was Jeon. In response, her agency ANDMARQ promptly issued a statement on April 4, 2024 firmly denying all claims. The agency declared the accusations baseless and emphasized that they had verified the facts with Jeon and those close to her. They had also announced plans to pursue legal action against the spread of false information in order to protect their artist's reputation. Jo Byeong Kyu After rising to fame with The Uncanny Counter, Jo Byeong Kyu was hit with school bullying allegations in 2021. A former classmate from his time in New Zealand accused him of verbal abuse and inappropriate behavior. While the original accuser eventually apologized and removed the post, more allegations soon surfaced from others who claimed to have known him during his elementary and middle school years. The actor and his agency strongly denied all the accusations and announced legal action against those spreading false information. Amid the controversy, he stepped away from the public eye for two years before quietly returning to the screen with the second season of The Uncanny Counter. 5 memorable K-drama mothers-in-law we'd love to have in our family

2. Ae Sun – 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' (2025) Ae Sun (IU, Moon So-ri) is determined, ambitious and loving—traits she wants to pass on to her daughter Yang Geum-myeong (also IU). So when she sees Yang Geum-myeong being demeaned by her potential mother-in-law, Ae Sun defends her in her quiet, resilient way. For instance, when Yang Geum-myeong was criticised for not knowing how to ladle soup, Ae Sun points out that she purposely didn't teach these domestic tasks to her daughter because she was too precious to their family, and because she wanted more for her child than to be confined at home. That said, when Ae Sun finally met a man who was worthy of her daughter, she was warm and welcoming. See more: 5 life lessons from 'When Life Gives You Tangerines' 3. Cha Yeon-hwa – 'Perfect Marriage Revenge' (2023) Above 'Perfect Marriage Revenge' (Photo: IMDB) Lee Mi-sook might have been a conniving con artist in Queen of Tears , but she was exactly the opposite in Perfect Marriage Revenge , where she was Seo Do-guk's (Sung Hoon) stepmother. She gives all stepmothers and mothers-in-law a good name, in fact. She sees through other people's fake niceness, doesn't hesitate to call out abusive behaviour and gives her daughter-in-law the love and acceptance that she's often craved. Hwang Jin-yi – 'Strong Girl Bong-soon' (2017) Above 'Strong Girl Bong-soon' (Photo: JTBC) You'd think a mother with a superpowered daughter would give you a hard time, but not Hwang Jin-yi (Shim Hye-jin). Like many mothers-in-law, she's not perfect, though she often acts like she is. Similar to the rest of the women in her family, she's strong and stubborn, plays favourites and can be controlling at times. However, she does have a warm and loving relationship with her son-in-law (Park Hyung-sik), whom she pampers with food. 5. Madame Choice – 'What's Wrong With Secretary Kim?' (2018) Above 'What's Wrong With Secretary Kim?' (Photo: tvN) Here's another mom who's far from perfect. After all, what kind of parent would hide their son's traumatic childhood kidnapping and go along with a fake story? That said, Madame Choi (Kim Hye-ok) was only trying to do what she thought was best for everyone. She loves her son's eventual love interest, Secretary Kim (Park Min-young), and understands her significance in her son's (Park Seo-joon) life. We also appreciate mothers-in-law who take their daughters-in-law shopping.
