Student-led initiatives take centre stage at Oakridge International School Bengaluru

International Schools across India are increasingly embracing student agency—a transformative approach that places learners at the centre of their educational journey. Oakridge International School Bengaluru has been a forerunner of this methodology as an IB continuum school, empowering students to take ownership of their learning process. "When students feel heard and valued in the school, they become empowered," explains Kavita Sukhani, Principal, Oakridge International School Bengaluru. "Our students graduate from school with everything they need for success – whatever they choose to be or do in life'. The initiatives by the Student Council at Oakridge exemplify how learner agency positively impacts both the school community and society at large. Oak Insider – Digital Community Building Teachers at Oakridge constantly train students on digital etiquette and encourage responsible use of gadgets, which is an essential self-management skill. This academic year, the student-led Instagram page garnered 60,000+ views and 1,000+ interactions, establishing an effective communication channel for school events. OAKMUN – Oakridge Model United Nations Oakridge International School Bengaluru hosted its 9th edition of prestigious Model United Nations, bigger & better as OAK MUN in November 2024. A one-of-its-kind MUN in the city, solely organised by the student leaders, witnessed the participation of 350+ students from 12 schools. The event is expanding to an international level as SEAMEI OAKMUN in September 2025. CASNIVAL – Creativity, Activity, and Service in Action Christmas is when students celebrate the 'Joy of Giving' through CASnival. Students organised food and game stalls, raising ₹1.5 lakhs to support the different charitable causes they are part of. Their efforts contributed to community development and to the Social Impact campaign of Nord Anglia Education. Codefest – Overnight Hackathon The 8th edition of Oakridge Codefest, the prestigious overnight hackathon, witnessed more than 100 participants contesting to secure cash prizes from a pool of ₹ 1.5 lakhs. The student committee successfully secured Adobe as the event sponsor, with the teachers supporting them to independently organise a large event. Relay for Life – Social Impact Campaign This Social Impact initiative, steered by the student-led Social Outreach Committee at Oakridge, successfully raised ₹ 2,20,000 for the activities of the Indian Cancer Society. Students brought together the school community for Relay for Life, an overnight walkathon dedicated to celebrating cancer survivors, honouring the loved ones lost, and raising funds for the work that aids cancer patients. Phoenix Cup – Interschool Sports Competition The interschool sports competition featured basketball, football, and swimming events, drawing around 400 enthusiastic participants from 12 schools across Bengaluru. The event highlighted student independence and autonomy in organising the event and networking with fellow players from different schools. Inter House Activities & Cultural Celebrations Regular house-wise competitions ensure a supportive ecosystem for students to celebrate inquiry and creativity. Throughout the year, the Student Council also organises celebrations for Dussehra, Diwali, Halloween, Winter Spirit Week, Teachers' Day, and Good Luck Party, promoting inclusivity and encouraging cultural appreciation within the school community. 'We are constantly on the lookout for opportunities where the Council can support students and enrich their school experience. This year, one of our key focuses is to strengthen school and student culture by organising a variety of events throughout the year', says Yajwin Krishna, Student Council President (AY 24-25). Speaking of student agency at Oakridge he further added, 'The events are closely aligned with our school's mission and vision, which remain at the heart of all Council initiatives. We have an open environment where students feel encouraged to voice their thoughts and opinions. Our Student Council is truly by the students, for the students'. Sachit Shastri, Student Council Vice President (AY 24-25) echoed the same sentiment. Netflix's new revenge thriller show has already crashed into the top 10 — but it has viewers divided

Netflix's new revenge thriller has managed to break into the platform's top 10, though it probably hasn't received the reaction the streaming service might have hoped for. The series in question is 'Bet,' a new live-action adaptation of Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura's popular manga 'Kakegurui,' which has already been adapted as an anime and a Japanese live-action series in the past. Created by 'Warrior Nun's' Simon Barry, the show is, in Barry's words, "something 'birthed' from the source material that inspired a new take — one that pays homage to it and doesn't try to replace it', and a project attempting to tap into the original's 'tone, audaciousness, and fun.' When Netflix dropped the "Bet" trailer last month, it'd be fair to say it was met with a healthy amount of skepticism, though there are clearly some curious viewers checking it out. Despite splitting opinions in early reviews, "Bet" has managed to claim the number 10 spot in Netflix's top 10 shows chart. If you're planning on checking it out, you can find more info about the new Netflix series and a quick round-up of what the streaming public has to say about 'Bet' below. The series follows Yumeko (Miku Martineau), a mysterious transfer student with an unbeatable poker face. She's starting out at St. Dominic's Prep, an elite private academy where the children of some of the most powerful people learn how to rule the world. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The school's status quo is dictated by underground gambling, and the top players get to sit on the Student Council. Yumeko's gambling skills put her in the crosshairs of that same Council, but her secret quest for revenge threatens to turn the school on its head entirely. In addition to Martineau, 'Bet' also stars Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O'Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, Ryan Sutherland, Dorian Giordano, Laura Afelskie, and Emma Elle Paterson. Opinions on "Bet" vary wildly, at present. Typically, we look to review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes for a steer on popular opinion on new releases, but right now, 'Bet' only has three accredited critics' reviews listed — but only one of those reviews is a positive take. Variety critic Aramide Tinubu said the series was 'repetitive and grows increasingly wearisome, offering new to the 'Kakegurui' fandom," offering this conclusion: 'Since the series is not quite faithful to the original manga, and the previous adaptations garnered such rave reviews, 'Bet' feels bland in comparison and completely unnecessary." At Decider, writer Joel Keller said the show is 'so busy being stylish that it forgets about the fact that there is a story that needs to be told," adding: 'there's nothing wrong with being a stylish show, but 'Bet's' concentration on style overwhelms any kind of substance, making the show a chore to watch'. However, Ready Steady Cut's Jonathan Wilson has offered a more positive spin on the series in his 3.5/5 review. 'Plenty about Bet doesn't work,' Wilson wrote, 'but it's so full of big swings and fun ideas that it's an easy, characterful binge-watch all the same.' While it doesn't have a critics rating, 'Bet' has at least earned a rating on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter. The score currently sits at 62%, drawn from fewer than 50 viewer scores. Viewer ratings on the platform oscillate wildly; I've seen more than one ½ star score and a reaction wherein a viewer called 'Bet' was 'an insult to the original anime.' On the flipside, you can find a fair few positive takes, too; there are several five-star reviews logged already, with one viewer calling it both 'a must-watch' and arguing that fans of the anime would 'definitely love this adaptation.' As with any new release, then, the best way to decide whether the new thriller deserves a spot on your watchlist is to stream 'Bet' on Netflix for yourself. You never know; this could be your favorite new watch. But if you're really not sold on 'Bet,' and now you're in between Netflix shows, we can still help you find your next watch. Pueblo students raise money for injured officers

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — Pueblo School District 60 (D60) said that after the Bessemer Academy Student Council learned that several Pueblo police officers were injured in a shooting in March, they rallied to provide support. Back in March, three Pueblo Police Department (PPD) officers were injured when they were ambushed by Billy Soto, according to PPD. Police were looking for Soto in the Bessemer area related to an attempted murder case. PPD said Soto fired 80 rounds from a rifle at officers before he was shot by police, killing him. When Student Council learned of the officers' injuries, they leaped into action and set up a Pickles for Police fundraiser. On Thursday, May 8, Student Council presented a $200 check to representatives of PPD along with a jar of pickles as an added gesture of gratefulness. D60 said the donated funds will be divided among the officers currently recovering from their injuries. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
