CM calls on Student Police Cadets to continue fight against drug abuse
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan called on the Student Police Cadets to continue their fight against drug abuse diligently. He was speaking after receiving the salute at the 15th anniversary parade of the Student Police Cadet (SPC) Project, a pride project of the Kerala Police, at the SAP Ground, Peroorkada, Thiruvananthapuram, on Saturday. Lauding the role played by SPC cadets in the State government's anti-drug campaign, the Chief Minister reminded the cadets that the fight against drug abuse should not be limited to any specific period. He said that SPC cadets should always be remembered as ambassadors of the war against drug abuse, and the cadets are the eyes and ears of the State government's anti-drug activities centered on schools. The Student Police Cadet programe, which was started in Kozhikode district on August 2, 2010, has been able to gain the complete trust and support of the Kerala society over the years. The SPC program has now completed 15 years since its inception and has achieved much recognition both nationally and internationally as the biggest youth initiative in school level in the country and the first organisation to function with gender equality. It is a matter of pride that most of the States in India are following our own project, SPC, he said. When this government came to power in 2016, it was only in 431 schools. This academic year, including the start of SPC in 70 new schools, the project is now running in 1,048 schools. About one lakh student police cadets, more than 2000 teachers, more than 3000 police officers and about two lakh former cadets are now part of the project. Through extensive social work, SPC cadets have also paved the way for exemplary changes in the society. The SPC has provided all possible assistance to the rehabilitation of disaster victims during the floods, the period of pandemics like COVID-19, and the Chooralmala disaster that occurred a year ago. The SPC has also undertaken activities to impart knowledge and literacy to children from marginalised tribal communities. During the COVID period, a Kuttipallikkudam was established for the education of children in tribal areas and TVs, newspapers, and study materials were provided to the children there. Cadets of Vithura Government Higher Secondary School undertook this activity. Today, this project is being adopted as a model by many SPC units. In addition, SPC cadets have also taken the lead in providing houses to their classmates. The Chief Minister released an e-magazine containing information about SPC's social welfare activities at the function and cut a cake with the cadets. The Student Police Cadet (SPC) project is among the most remarkable models presented by Kerala to the world, Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice R. Bindu has said, while inaugurating the SPC Day celebrations and launching new SPC units in schools under the Thrissur Rural police district. Thrissur Rural District Police Chief B. Krishnakumar hoisted the SPC flag to mark the occasion at Sreekrishna HSS, Anandapuram, on Saturday. Civic commitment Addressing the function, the Minister praised the project for instilling a strong sense of social responsibility and humanitarian values in students. 'The SPC initiative is not just about discipline; it's a training ground for compassionate leadership and civic commitment,' she said. Dr. Bindu also received the salute during the ceremonial parade conducted as part of the celebrations. 'By being part of this disciplined system, students learn accountability and teamwork, and are trained to stand firm against social injustices and evils. This is what makes the Student Police Cadet project a cornerstone initiative for our State,' she added. 42 schools The district currently has SPC units in 42 schools, including a model residential school. For the 2025 academic year, SPC units were newly introduced at three more government schools: T.S. Sinoj, Thrissur District Nodal Officer and Additional Superintendent of Police, led the SPC parade along with Muriyad grama panchayat president Jose J. Chittilappilly, and various police officers.

Student Police Cadet is Kerala's contribution to world, says Minister P. Rajeeve
Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme is one of the many novel concepts contributed by Kerala to the world, said Minister for Industries and Law P. Rajeeve. He was speaking after inaugurating the SPC Day celebrations at the Keezhmadu Model Residential School in Ernakulam district on Saturday (August 2, 2025). SPC plays a significant role in inculcating among students awareness about law, discipline, social commitment, humanitarian values and sense of justice. The Minister hailed SPC for fulfilling an honourable mission in a prideful manner. Key role The State government has devised a comprehensive programme to resist drugs even as the drug menace is getting worsened across the world. More than penal measures, there is a need to create awareness about drugs and its threat. The State now has a system to report students found abusing substances and to bring them back to normal life with the support of experts. SPC is best placed to make schools drug-free. Mr. Rajeeve wished SPC to be able to live up to that challenge. Consent letters were handed over to schools, which were newly issued SPC programme. Keezhmadu Model Residential School and Mar Elias Higher Secondary School bagged the first and second prizes for the best SPC platoon. Anti-drug pledge was administered to students at the event. Kochi City Deputy Commissioner Juvvanapudi Mahesh hoisted the flag marking the inauguration of celebrations. A parade by SPCs from 10 schools was also held.

CM's office denies allegations of skipping smart road inauguration due to protest
T'puram: CM Pinarayi Vijayan 's office termed the report that the chief minister stayed away from the inauguration of smart roads due to a protest from local self-govt minister M B Rajesh as baseless. "On May 16, the CM cancelled three events due to health reasons. These events included a review meeting related to monsoon precautions, the road inauguration and a Student Police Cadet program," a statement from the CMO said. The subsequent spread of news suggesting that the CM stayed away from the road inauguration for some other reason is part of a political agenda to undermine the success of the state govt's fourth-anniversary event, the statement said. The LSG minister also denied reports that he had differences with the PWD minister over the inauguration of the smart city roads. Rajesh said that he never complained to the chief minister and all the reports were wrong. "The media is attempting to create an impression that there is a divide in the govt and more such baseless reports can be expected during the election year," he added.
