Columbus man incriminated by security system pleads guilty to felony assault

ZANESVILLE ‒ A shooting at a Wheeling Avenue house earlier this year involved a Columbus man, who was partially incriminated by the residence's own security system. Chaison Dewayne Suber, also known as Yak, 28, recently pleaded guilty to two counts, felony assault with a firearm, a second-degree felony, and possessing a weapon while under disability, a third-degree felony. Suber could receive up to $15,000 in fines and eight years for felonious assault, plus another mandatory three for the count's gun specification. He could also be given up to three years and a $10,000 fine for gun possession. In January, Zanesville police responded to Wheeling Avenue address for a medical emergency. There, responders found a male victim with a gunshot wound to his lower left leg, explained an announcement from the Muskingum County Prosecutor's Office. Suber was quickly identified as a suspect after witnesses reportedly told investigators that he and the victim had gotten into an argument before the shooting. A security camera at the house also showed the two arguing and Suber pulling a gun from underneath a pillow and shooting the victim. The victim was transported to Genesis Hospital, where he underwent surgery. Police retrieved the firearm, a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine behind paneling in an upstairs bedroom, the announcement added. "He also admitted to having a weapon illegally since he was already on supervised release from a federal drug case involving meth and fentanyl," the announcement said. Two of Suber's initial charges were dismissed as part of his plea deal, including two tampering with evidence counts, both third-degree felonies. Suber was represented by defense attorney Christopher Signil, while the state by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John Litle. FEMA assistance tops $2.1 million in Mercer

Feb. 5—princeton — More than $2.1 million in federal assistance has been approved for Mercer County residents impacted from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, FEMA officials said Tuesday. Friday is the deadline for area residents to apply to FEMA for disaster assistance. As the close of business Monday, FEMA has approved $2,199,328 for individual assistance, according to Tiana Suber, a media relations specialist with FEMA. "We are at $2.1 million dollars in dispersed monies to survivors in Mercer County and over a thousand registrations," Suber said Tuesday. "The deadline is this Friday, Feb. 7, 2025." People who have applied for FEMA assistance by Friday will be able to visit the disaster recovery center until Feb. 14 if they need help with their applications or need to ask questions, she said. Suber provided a breakdown of the disaster assistance approved in Mercer County. The $2,199,328 FEMA has approved for Individual Assistance includes: —$1,347,727 for housing assistance. —$851,600 for other needs assistance. —There had been 1,041 cumulative registrations in Mercer County as of Tuesday. —749 home inspections had been issued; 728 inspections had been completed; and 21 were pending. Ever since FEMA opened a Mercer County disaster relief center on Dec. 16, 2024, the agency's representatives have registered residents who are still dealing with wind damage and flood damage inflicted when remnants of Hurricane Helene hit the region between Sept. 25 to 28, 2024. Assistance has ranged from basic home repairs to rental assistance, Georgeta Dragoiu, a federal coordinating officer with FEMA, said during a recent media briefing. She encouraged Helene storm victims to visit the disaster relief center while it's still in Mercer County and apply for assistance. She also encouraged people who have applied for FEMA assistance to visit the center until it closes on Feb. 14 if they have any questions or concerns. FEMA representatives get questions ranging from uploading documents to helping applicants apply online. "Come in, apply, get in the system," Dragoui said. "Even if your application is incomplete, once you're in the system there's always more time to provide additional documentation, answer any questions, make an appeal; so get in the system and make sure you give us a call or come in and see us if you have any questions." Applicants who do not have computers at home can speak with the center's FEMA specialists for help, she said. Friday is also the deadline to apply for U.S. Small Business Administration low-interest loans. People can also apply for FEMA assistance by phone at 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone line operates from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week. People who use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, should give FEMA their number for that service. Residents can also apply online at or download the FEMA app to their smartphone or tablet. Friday is also the application deadline for homeowners, renters and business owners to apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration physical disaster loan. Applicants can apply online at call SBA's Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955, or email disastercustomerservice@ for more information on SBA disaster assistance. For people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability, dial 7-1-1 to access telecommunications relay service. Jim Accurso, public affairs specialist for the SBA Office of Disaster Recovery and Resilience, said during a recent briefing that people wanting to apply for SBA assistance can go to the Lifeline Church of God or the business recovery center at the Princeton Public Library. Most people do not know that the SBA also helps homeowners and renters, he said. The SBA has the same Friday, Feb. 7 deadline as FEMA, but the agency also has a 60-day grace period for people to apply for loans. However, Mercer County residents are encouraged to speak with SBA representatives in person while they are in Mercer County. Potential applicants are encouraged to speak with the SBA and not wait for their insurance companies to contact them first. Applicants for SBA loans are assigned to a loan officer. The loan caps are $2 million for the physical damage loans. For homeowners, the SBA can help up to $500,000 for physical damage, and then homeowners and renters can get up to $100,000 for contents of their home including vehicles. Applicants awarded an SBA loan have 60 days to accept it. Once they get the initial payout, they do not have to start repaying the loan until 13 months have elapsed, and it is deferred interest free for a year, Accurso said. The SBA's interest rates are 4% and less. Contact Greg Jordan at gjordan@ Contact Greg Jordan at gjordan@
