‘Dastavez' flips through pages of old newspapers

1 2 Lucknow: Old newspapers never lose their charm. And it's a delight if you get to see a varied and treasured collection of them at one place. 'Dastavez' exhibition at Kokoro Art Gallery in the city is one such address. 'Dastavez' showcases a collection of old newspapers collected by Indian Revenue Service officer Suboor Usmani, who hails from Lucknow. "I started collecting and cataloguing the newspapers in 1989. Prior to that they were collected by my father and grandfather. I keep them airtight in acid paper in a separate cupboard in my house, shared Usmani. The exhibition will be open for public from 11am to 8pm till Aug 12. "My career postings take me to different places. Often people gift me newspapers of their regions while many I download from online portals which have old magazines, newspapers, and books," Usmani said. As many as 40 old newspapers, including the pages of The Times of India, and international dailies are on display. One newspaper collected by his grandfather and passed to his father is the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. The Sinking of the Titanic in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is another treasured collection. Prasar Bharati chairman Navneet Sehgal, who was the chief guest on the inaugural day, said, "This exhibition is not just a display of old newspapers, it is a living archive of our shared memory. These headlines carry the voices of the past, and through them, we understand how far we've come and the values that have shaped us." Exhibition curator Vandana Sehgal said, "Curating this exhibition has been a journey into the heartbeat of history. Each page, each headline reveals the anxiety, the resilience, the hope, and the changing tides of time. Dastavez is a reminder of how journalism doesn't just inform — it shapes perception, memory, and identity." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
