Arches for Samayapuram & Vayalur temples in Tiruchy delayed
TIRUCHY: Questioning the delay in construction of a new entrance arch despite its groundbreaking ceremony having been held months ago, devotees and local residents seek the HR&CE department to respect visitors' sentiments and immediately complete the 'symbolic gateway' to the Mariamman temple in Samayapuram. A similar plea has been placed in regard to the Subramanya Swamy temple in Vayalur, whose entrance arch collapsed while under construction in February this year. The Mariamman temple, located near the Tiruchy-Chennai NH, had an entrance arch featuring carved idols of the principal deity of Mariamman, besides that of Murugan and Ganesha, installed near the Samayapuram four-road junction. The structure of 40 years, however, suffered damage after a truck en route to Manachanallur via the Samayapuram service road rammed into its base on August 3, 2024. The temple authorities inspected the site and brought down the entire structure to avoid danger to the public. Following this, a new arch was planned to be constructed, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held. No work, however, was carried since. Pointing out a year having nearly passed since the old arch was brought down, R Chellappan, a shopkeeper, said, 'Every morning, before opening my shop, I offered prayers at the arch. Further, for many truck drivers and vehicles heading to other districts, it was a sacred starting point. We miss it deeply.' Devotees also point to the Subramanya Swamy temple in Kumaravayalur being in a similar situation. As part of a Rs 4-crore renovation project, a 25-foot-high and 40-foot-wide decorative entrance arch was being constructed on the Vayalur-Adavathur road to replace an ageing one at the Chola-period temple. On February 6, 2025, the new arch, however, suddenly collapsed. R Kalaiselvan, a resident of Vasan Nagar and a frequent visitor to the Vayalur temple, said, 'The arch served as a landmark. Without it, many first-time visitors miss the turn to the temple and have to either enquire their way to it or return after passing it. It is more than just architecture and is part of the temple's identity. Months have passed but nothing has been done. The long delay in reconstruction shows neglect of our cultural heritage.' When contacted, an HR&CE official in Tiruchy told TNIE, 'We are looking for a new donor [to reconstruct the entrance arch] to the Vayalur temple. At Samayapuram, the arch base work has begun but it has been paused due to the Aadi footfall. Work will resume and be completed soon.'

Thousands attend consecration at Thiruparankundram
MADURAI: The consecration of Subramanya Swamy temple in Thiruparankundram, was conducted early on Monday. Several thousands of people, including ministers P K Sekar Babu and P Moorthy, district collector K J Praveen Kumar, witnessed the event. The rituals began at 3.45 am and the holy water was taken in a procession to the top of the rajagopuram for the consecration at 5.30 am. Holy water was sprayed on the devotees using 10 drones. Speaking to reporters, Minister Sekar Babu said, 'The Dravidian Model government has successfully conducted kumbabishekam in about 3,347 temples, including 124 Murugan temples, so far in TN. Arrangements have been made in temples to ensure safety of people.' Also, the health department had deployed special teams as a large number of people are expected to visit the temple on Tuesday. An official said, 'A team of doctors from the PHCs in Madurai are conducting 10 camps near Thiruparankundram. Since there is a huge gathering, two special teams from Thiruparankundram GH have been formed. Besides, a 50-bedded calamity ward has been created in Government Rajaji Hospital for emergencies.'

Thousands witness grand consecration of Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple after 16 years
Thousands of devotees witnessed the grand consecration of the Subramanya Swamy temple in Tiruchendur on Monday (July 7, 2025). Conducted between 6:15 a.m. and 6:50 a.m., the ceremony, organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department after a gap of 16 years, drew devotees in large numbers from across Tamil Nadu. As the event was scheduled to take place early in the morning, pilgrims from the neighboring districts and various places across the State began arriving on the temple premises as early as Sunday (July 6, 2025) noon. Following the completion of the 12th phase of yagasala puja in the early hours of Monday, the holy water to be poured on Kumba Kalasa was carried in a ceremonial procession on the temple premises. The procession culminated with the water being taken to the designated vimanas and gopurams. The rituals of performing puja for Kumba Kalasa commenced around 5:50 a.m., soon after the holy water reached the dedicated spots atop the vimanas and gopurams. The consecration of both east and west gopurams and vimanas were performed simultaneously at the scheduled time, amidst vedic chants and the resounding devotion of the crowd chanting 'Vetrivel Muruganukku Arogara'. The Kumba Kalasas pre-filled with kodo millet were then sanctified with holy water, followed by the deeparadhana. Following the consecration event rituals, holy water was sprayed on devotees with drones, marking the event's spiritual and technological blend. A large number of pilgrims gathered at the seashore and the temple's entry points, which offer a stunning view of the rajagopuram and sacred proceedings during the consecration. HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekarbabu, HR&CE department Commissioner P.N. Sridhar, and other officials participated in the event.

From 1959 to 2025: A spiritual milestone that reflects the temple's transformation with modern amenities
After a gap of 16 years pilgrims across the world, especially from Tamil Nadu have gathered at Tiruchendur to witness the sacred spectacle of the consecration ceremony of the Subramanya Swamy temple. As the sun rises over the Bay of Bengal, the air around the ancient coastal shrine will be charged with a spiritual intensity. The temple which recently underwent a massive renovation and development works at a cost of ₹300 crore, is celebrating its consecration ceremony today between 6:15 a.m. and 6:50 a.m. Since India's independence in 1947, the Subramanya Swamy temple in Tiruchendur marked many significant milestones beyond its annual festivals such as the car festivals, 'Vaikasi Visakam, Thai Poosam and Panguni Uthiram,' events. One of the most notable events was the tercentenary celebrations of the temple, which was published in The Hindu on May 10, 1954, commemorating the 300th year of restoration and re-installation of Lord Shanmugar's idol at the temple on May 7, 1954. An article published in The Hindu on July 12, 1959 reported the consecration ceremony held at the temple on July 8, 1959, it reads: 'The Ashtabandhana kumbabishekam of the ancient shrine of Lord Subramanya Swamy at Tiruchendur came off during early hours of this morning amidst the scenes of great enthusiasm evinced by thousands of devotees gathered from all over the state.' At that time, the Devasthanam had sanctioned ₹30,000 for the consecration ceremony expenses. Following the donation of several devotees, the total expense was estimated at ₹55,000 during that year's consecration. The temple witnessed its next consecration on June 24, 1971. 'The elaborate rituals connected with the ceremony began on June 16 and three namboodiri pandits from Trivandrum performed various ceremonies,' as published by The Hindu on June 25, 1971. This was followed by another consecration ceremony at the temple on June 27, 1983, attended by former minister RM. Veerappan, then Minister of Religious Endowments department. Further consecration ceremonies were held in 1995 and 2009. In 2009, the consecration was conducted on July 2, 2009, where lakhs of devotees converged at Tiruchendur to witness the event. K.R. Periya Karuppan, then Minister of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department participated in the event. The current consecration being held today is significant, not just as a spiritual event but also as a symbol of large-scale temple infrastructure development in Tamil Nadu. This marks the first temple in Tamil Nadu to be renovated and upgraded at a cost of ₹300 crore, with ₹100 crore sanctioned by HR&CE Department and ₹200 crore contributed by the HCL. The major developments at the temple include a huge tonsure (head shaving) block, a Q-line complex with a waiting area, new administrative blocks, new accommodation facilities, a UPS and network system, a healthcare centre, etc. Today's consecration not only marks a spiritual milestone, but also reflects the temple's transformation with modern and necessary amenities, without losing its ancient charm and sacred energy.

Thoothukudi collector reviews arrangements for Tiruchendur temple consecration ceremony
The consecration ceremony of Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple is scheduled to take place on July 7. In view of this a preparatory meeting to discuss the necessary arrangements was held at Thoothukudi district collectorate, presided over by the District Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting the collector stated that the yagasalai puja related to consecration ceremony would begin on July 1 and on the day of consecration ceremony over 10-lakh people are expected to gather for the festival. He directed the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) to ensure uninterrupted supply of at least five lakh litres of drinking water daily throughout the festival period. He emphasised the importance of providing safe drinking water, setting up temporary toilets and parking areas under the Tiruchendur Municipality. He insisted on evicting the stray dogs and cattle from the temple premises and the municipality was also directed to ensure regular garbage clearance throughout the town. Mr. Elambahavath directed the highway officials to expedite the repair of Tiruchendur-Thoothukudi road and internal roads in the Tiruchendur town. Additionally, drainage connections blockages should be cleared and uninterrupted power supply ensured. A medical team must be stationed within the temple premises with 24x7 ambulance service and emergency treatment facilities. The police department was instructed to ensure adequate security arrangements to prevent overcrowding and to regulate the movement of devotees for smooth darshan. The Vaikasi Visakam festival at Tiruchendur is scheduled for June 9. Since this event also draws lakhs of devotees, the District Collector advised the officials to make necessary arrangements to accommodate the visiting devotees during this festival as well.
