Two more debutants as Proteas go in search of series win in Bulawayo

The first call Senokwane made after being told he would start on Sunday was to his mother Eunice. 'She's been with me through everything, she's seen everything, it was special to let her know that her investment went into something. She was happy to know her son was going to make his debut for SA,' said Senokwane. It was similar for Subrayen, who at 31, has had to battle through various trials and tribulations — including a suspension for a suspect action in 2015. But he's become one of the craftiest bowlers at domestic level and last summer was the second highest wicket taker in Four Day Series. In the recent series between SA A and the West Indies A, Subrayen claimed a second innings five-wicket haul to help the South Africans to an innings and 88-run victory. 'I've been through ups and downs, but they have shaped me as a cricketer,' said Subrayen. The Proteas made three changes to the team that won the first Test by 328 runs, also at the Queen Sports Club last week. Senokwane replaces Matthew Breetzke, who made 13 and one in the first Test, while Subrayen replaces Kwena Maphaka, who struggled with his rhythm and failed to pick up a wicket. Senuran Muthusamy makes his first appearance since last October against Bangladesh, as a replacement for the injured Keshav Maharaj. Mulder, who is captaining the side after Maharaj picked up a groin strain last week, said he didn't expect conditions in Bulawayo to change much from what they were in the first Test — which SA won comprehensively. 'There is less moisture than last week, and picking the two spinners is for longevity,' said Mulder. 'If you look at how the pitch played, it flattened out quite nicely and having two options, an off-spinner in Subs and a left arm spinner in Sen covers all the bases, along with the three seamers.' Mulder expects Tony de Zorzi and David Bedingham to bounce back after the pair struggled in the first Test. Both made first innings ducks and then they were dismissed in the 30s in the second innings, while appearing well set. 'Those guys are run-scorers, if you know them, their characters, the only way to keep their spot is to get runs. Both of them, when their backs are against the wall, will stand up. It's exciting to see them hungry. There were a couple of hard conversations, as a team and they have a point to prove,' said Mulder. Despite dominating last week, Mulder said the Proteas would not be taking Zimbabwe lightly. 'We know how tough Zimbabwe can be to beat. We don't think we are going to just walk through them in the second game.'

Proteas Test debut a happy moment for Dolphins spinner Prenelan Subrayen

"With his achievements over the years, I think he's not only a role model, but a friend off the field as well." "Receiving my cap from Keshav is a cherry on top kind of thing. Keshav and I have been friends for a very long time, as well as playing for the Dolphins for a very long time," Subrayen told the media on the eve of the second Test. Subrayen received his Test baggy green cap from Maharaj himself, a fitting moment given that the two had played together at the Dolphins since starting their journey. The off-spinner will make his debut after having played over 70 First-Class matches, returning 242 wickets and 12 five-wicket hauls at an average of 27.94. Subrayen comes into the playing side, replacing the injured Keshav Maharaj. The 31-year-old has earned the opportunity having been a consistent performer for the Dolphins in the Four-Day competition for many years. Dolphins off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen is set to don the Proteas Test baggy green for the first time in the second Test between South Africa and Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Sunday. 🔥 TEAM NEWS 🔥 Wiaan Mulder will lead the Proteas Men as captain in the second and final Test match of the Zimbabwean series. 🧢🇿🇦 A proud moment as Prenelan Subrayen and Lesego Senokwane are set to make their Test debuts. 🏏✨ A fresh chapter in South African cricket as our… Subrayen described the moment as a happy moment for himself and his family. "Definitely a very happy moment for me. It was both my parents ... I think it was a dream of theirs to finally see me play for South Africa, and they are really ecstatic. My dad's a Level 3 coach. But I think the role that they played, as well as both my sisters, has been massive for me, right from the junior levels right till now," said Subrayen. "It's been a case of no pressure being put on me and just being allowed to express myself on and off the field. It's a great feeling. It's a lot of hard work that has been put in behind the scenes as well as on the field. " I think it's just been family. The bond between family and the close-knit between me and my family has definitely been the main driving force for me. You go through different phases in your domestic career, and I think I've been through most of them, the ups and downs." Subrayen is a newbie in the Test environment, but feels welcome in the squad as he has experience being coached by Shukri Conrad. "I'm kind of new to the change room. I was fortunate enough to work with Shuks in one of my National Academy years, so he kind of knows me pretty decently as a person on and off the field," said Subrayen. "I think he managed one of our football teams as well when I was in National Academy, so he kind of knows me off the field as well. "He kind of knows my character, so that definitely made it easy for me to fit in, as well as a lot of the guys within the set-up playing against them over the years and playing in the same team as most of them. It definitely made it easy to fit in." The second Test is set to get underway on Sunday in Bulawayo.

Proteas will reap reward of Zimbabwe trip as they build depth for new Test cycle

Matthew Breetzke is expected to get another opportunity to develop his Test skills when the Proteas play against Zimbabwe. Photo: AFP Senokwane has stood out with the bat in the domestic first-class competition, racking up seven centuries in his career so far, including a high score of 205, on his way to a maiden Test call-up. The right-hander is known for his solid technique and ability to occupy the crease for long periods. Capped batters Zubayr Hamza and Matthew Breetzke, meanwhile, have been recalled to the squad to give them opportunities to hone their skills at the highest level. South Africa coach Shukri Conrad has taken five uncapped players to Bulawayo for the two-Test series against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club. Opening batter Lesego Senokwane, middle-order batters Dewald Brevis and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, and bowlers Codi Yusuf and Prenelan Subrayen are the debutants who might get a crack at Test cricket this week in south-west Zimbabwe. Brevis and Pretorius, on the other hand, are known for their attacking nature in the middle order and were both impressive in last season's CSA Four-Day Series. Lions fast bowler Yusuf has made a name for himself in domestic cricket as one of the quickest bowlers in the country, while spinner Subrayen's experience has seen him earn a Test call-up. Although the trip to Zimbabwe falls outside the new World Test Championship cycle, the series is likely to influence South Africa's preparations. In the previous cycle, South Africa registered a memorable win at Lord's, but Conrad had to navigate a spate of injuries to key fast bowlers and the absence of consistent batter Temba Bavuma at times. The Zimbabwe tour is thus an opportunity to strengthen squad depth and avoid similar situations in the future. Subrayen's inclusion, in particular, signals long-term thinking as South Africa prepare for spin-friendly tours of Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka in this cycle. One would imagine Keshav Maharaj will need a partner in those conditions. Youngster Kwena Maphaka will also return to the Test side, having played only one match in his career so far. Importantly, key players such as Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen and Temba Bavuma will sit out the Zimbabwe series, ensuring they remain fresh for the beginning of the new WTC campaign. For the uncapped players, the trip to Zimbabwe presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stake a claim for regular places in the Test squad.
