Tipperary captain pays emotioal tribute to Dillon Quirke after All-Ireland-win

Sam O'Farrell paid tribute to Dillon Quirke after captaining Tipperary to victory in the All-Ireland U20 Hurling Championship final on Saturday. The Premier County defeated Kilkenny at Nowlan Park in the decider. Tipp ran out winners by 3-19 to 1-16 thanks to two second half goals from Paddy McCormack before Conor Martin got the third as they lifted the James Nowlan Cup for the first time since 2018, when Quirke was part of the winning team. Quirke died after collapsing during a county senior championship game at Semple Stadium in 2022. The Dillon Quirke Foundation was set up in his memory to raise awareness of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) and fund widespread cardiac screening for young people (aged 13-17) involved in sport. Paying tribute to Quirke, O'Farrell said during his speech after Saturday's final: "On happy occasions like this, there's always some sadness when we think of the people who are no longer with us to celebrate this victory. There's one man in particular I want to mention, who wherever Tipperary hurling teams play will never be forgotten. That man is Dillon Quirke. "An All-Ireland winner at under-21 level in 2018. For the blue and gold, he always played with pride, determination, courage and skill. And it is those qualities that we wanted to bring here today and represent the Tipperary jersey as Dylan did when he played. "Dylan will continue to inspire Tipperary hurlers for many years to come."

Over 200 golfers competed for the Anthony Rochford Memorial trophy, which was played in aid of the Dillon Quirke Foundation, organised by members of Sydney Shamrocks and Geraldine O' Hanrahan's GAA clubs, that will also benefit from some of the proceeds. 'It was wonderful to see a full timesheet and such generosity shown by those who played and turned up again at New Ross Golf Club for the third outing,' said John Rochford. 'We are delighted that the classic in memory of Anthony is so well considered and supported and that this worthwhile cause will benefit from it.' The Dillon Quirke Foundation was chosen as the charity this year, given the GAA links with the organising group. 'The Foundation has already screened 10,000 young sports players for cardiac issues, and we felt this was an appropriate link, given Anthony's passion for hurling having played with Geraldine O 'Hanrahan's, Wexford Minors, Lucan Sarsfields and Sydney Shamrocks. "Hopefully the money we raised, along with all the other supporters of the Foundation, will help identify and deter Sudden Adult Death Syndrome among healthy young people by early screening,' John said. 'We were delighted that Dan Quirke, Dillon's father, joined us on the day, along with Tipperary All Ireland hurling greats, Declan Ryan and Joe Hayes,' he added. Anthony's mother and father, Ann and Sean Rochford, along with members of the family, were in attendance at New Ross Golf Club clubhouse for the presentation of prizes, and the first prize of a fourball in Ballybunion Golf Club in Co Kerry, was won by Willie Whitty, Jimmy Ryan, James Wallace and Willie Kelly. 'We would like to thank all our players, sponsors and those who assisted with the logistics of the 2025 Golf Classic, for their participation and for raising in excess of €12,000 for the various recipients. We also thank New Ross Golf Club for being such generous and gracious hosts and look forward already to a return there in 2026,' John concluded.

Teacher, 31, died after ‘banging his head while putting on his trainers to go to work'

TRAGIC END Teacher, 31, died after 'banging his head while putting on his trainers to go to work' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A BELOVED teacher died after hitting his head while putting on his trainers to go to work, an inquest has been told. Patrick Guthrie, 31, was found wearing one shoe in the living room of his home by his sister Patricia, St Pancras Coroner's Court in London was told. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up She told the inquest she had received two voicemails from his school alerting her that he hadn't attended classes for two days, prompting her to visit his home. Patricia then discovered the English and film studies teacher dead at the flat in Islington, north London. Patrick had been a teacher at Hendon School since September 2023 and was said to have 'immediately impressed' staff when he joined. However, the school alerted his family on December 4, 2024, that he had not been at work and hadn't contacted them about it. Patricia said she had been "really concerned" when the school reached out as it was "very unlike Patrick" to not turn up - telling the court that he "never missed work". The court also heard that the flat was deadlocked from the inside, with Patricia discovering Patrick lying on the living room floor with his head against a wall and his neck hyperextended. Sgt Kevin Clark, who attended the address, noted a crack to the wall where it recessed into a window - which is consistent with Patrick having tragically falling and hitting his head against it. A rucksack filled with work notes was also discovered in the kitchen of the property. Sgt Clark told the court: 'My opinion was that this was Mr Guthrie's work stuff and that he was preparing to go to work.' On top of this, one of Patrick's trainers was on his foot while the other was off, indicating that he could have been putting them on while he fell. 'Fit and healthy' PE teacher, 32, given just 12 months to live after 'simple football injury' revealed 'silent killer' An autopsy carried out by Dr Liina Palm, consultant in histopathology at Great Ormond Street Hospital, found two areas of external injury - a large bruise to the left side of Patrick's forehead and bruising on his lower shin. The court was also told there was evidence of trauma to the teacher's brain and that it was heavier than expected, indicating that swelling could have occured. While his heart was normal, Dr Joseph Westaby, of St George's Hospital said that Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) - where the heart beats irregularly and causes cardiac arrest - could not be ruled out. Dr Palm said she considered this may have happened because there were no protective marks found on the body - and these usually occur when a conscious person falls and tries to break their collapse by putting their arms out. FRACTURED FOOT THEORY Patrick had suffered a fractured foot in February 2024, which helped prompt the theory that he fell while putting his trainers on, due to pain from the healing foot trauma. However, Dr Palm said: 'It's very difficult to support this theory that somebody fully conscious wouldn't try to break their fall.' She gave his causes of death as a brain injury, positional asphyxia, cardiac arrest and SADS. A toxicology report was completely clear - except for caffeine, which again suggested Patrick may have been leaving for work. Patricia told the court the family were undergoing testing to see if there was a genetic cause for the SADS. She added: 'It was such a shock, for someone that was so healthy.' A conclusion of natural causes was recorded by the assistant coroner for Inner North London, Ian Potter. He said: 'He likely had a form of acute cardiac arrhythmia causing him to fall as a result of losing consciousness.' Hendon School said at the time of Patrick's death that he was known for his 'diligent, hard work.' The school added: 'Patrick loved being a teacher. He saw English teaching as more than just a job - it was a vocation. 'Our thoughts are obviously with Patrick's family at this difficult time. 'It is hard to imagine the shock and grief that his mother, sister and extended family must be experiencing at losing such an essentially kind and decent son, brother and uncle. 'It has been especially touching to see the reaction of the students to this sad event." In an emotional tribute, the school continued: "Their moments of reflection and the numerous, heartfelt additions to the book of condolence are evidence of what the staff here have always known: Hendon School students are genuinely kind and caring. "They are the reason why the staff here work so hard. Patrick knew this. And no one worked harder than Patrick."

Family of Teacher, 31, in 'Shock' After He Fell and Died While Putting on Sneakers, Inquest Hears

A teacher died while putting on sneakers to get ready for work, an inquest has heard 31-year-old Patrick Guthrie was putting on sneakers when he fell and hit his head in London last year His death has been ruled as positional asphyxia, cardiac arrest, Sudden Adult Death Syndrome and brain injuryA teacher died at home while preparing for work, an inquest has heard. According to the London Evening Standard, 31-year-old Patrick Guthrie was putting on sneakers when he fell and hit his head in London last year. His sister, Patricia Guthrie, found his body in the living room after his workplace called her on December 4, 2024, stating that he had been absent from school for two days. The English and film studies teacher had been working at Hendon School since September 2023. Meanwhile, Patrick had been staying at Patricia's apartment in Mitchison Road, Islington, while she was staying with their mother, Jenny Murphy. PEOPLE reached out to the St Pancras Coroner's Court and the Metropolitan Police for comment, but they did not immediately respond. The calls from her brother's school 'really concerned me as it was very unlike Patrick. He has never missed work," Patricia said. After returning home, the worried sister found Patrick on the floor with his neck hyperextended and his head against the wall. Sgt Kevin Clark reportedly said the wall had a crack where a window was, which detectives believe Patrick's head landed on. 'My opinion was that this was Mr Guthrie's work stuff and that he was preparing to go to work,' Sgt Clark said after Guthrie's rucksack with work items was found in the kitchen. He was also wearing one of his sneakers. An autopsy found that Patrick had a large bruise on his forehead and another on his chin. His brain also suffered from trauma. Dr Joseph Westaby, who works with St George's Hospital, highlighted that Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) could have been the cause of death. According to the Cleveland Clinic, SADS is a heart condition where an abnormal heart rhythm affects the heart's electrical system, causing sudden death. Great Ormond Street Hospital Histopathology consultant, Dr Liina Palm, suggested a cardiac arrest could have happened due to Gruthie's body not having any protective marks. Meanwhile, the teacher also fractured his foot in February 2024, causing doctors to consider that he may have had pain while putting on his sneakers. 'It's very difficult to support this theory that somebody fully conscious wouldn't try to break their fall,' Dr Palm said. Patrick's cause of death has been ruled as positional asphyxia, cardiac arrest, Sudden Adult Death Syndrome and brain injury. Patricia reportedly told the court that she and her family were going to be tested for the gene that causes SADS. 'It was such a shock, for someone that was so healthy,' she said. Hendon School also paid tribute to their late staff member in December. 'The Hendon School community experienced the saddest of news with the sudden passing of English and Film Studies teacher, Mr. Patrick Guthrie,' representatives for the school wrote on their official website. 'Mr. Guthrie joined the school in September 2023 and immediately impressed us with his passion for English; his dedication to pedagogy; and his diligent, hard work.' They added, 'Our thoughts are obviously with Patrick's family at this difficult time. It is hard to imagine the shock and grief that his mother, sister and extended family must be experiencing at losing such an essentially kind and decent son, brother and uncle.'
