Guernsey's Liberation Day music line up announced

The full music line up for Guernsey's 80th Liberation Day celebrations on 9 May has been year marks the 80th anniversary of the departure of German forces, who invaded the island on 30 June will be music performances throughout the day on North Beach, Albert Pier and Castle Cornet. A vintage fair which includes a carousel featured in the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, will be part of the family entertainment for Guernsey's 80th Liberation Day on 9 May. The carousel called Pride of the South, which dates back to 1893, also appeared in the movies Half a Sixpence and Who Framed Roger Steam Fair said its rides also included a "chair-o-plane, helter skelter and 10 1950s Austin J40 pedal cars". Deputy Sue Aldwell, from Education, Sport and Culture, said: "The Children's Zone will be a fantastic space for families to come together and enjoy a day filled with laughter, creativity and classic fairground fun." She added: "We can't wait to see the pier buzzing with families as we come together to celebrate this important milestone in Guernsey's history."

People in Guernsey have been invited to decorate their homes, workplaces and vehicles in the run-up to the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day in previous years, islanders have put up decorations including bunting, a tradition that started during the Covid-19 lockdown, the States Sue Aldwell, from Education, Sport and Culture, said: "This year, we encourage everyone to think outside of the box, get creative, and perhaps plan community art, floral arrangements, or dress-up days."The States said there was a bunting template on the Liberation Day website, adding: "All you need are scissors, glue, tape and some Liberation spirit." People could use recycled materials for flags to make them more sustainable, the States event on 9 May will mark the island's liberation from occupying German forces at the end of World War Two in said decorations would also allow older people who lived through the occupation to enjoy the celebrations if they were unable join parish or island-wide events.

Tea tent to offer quiet space at Liberation Day 80 celebrations
