'Excellent' Glasgow schools applauded after inspection praise

At a meeting of Glasgow City Council's education committee, Sufyan, Yvie and Naomi from Hyndland Secondary, and Zainab, Duha and Summer from Cleeves Primary, joined politicians and officials to share their success. The committee was considering a report on the city's performance in Education Scotland inspections over the 2024/25 session. Since August, 10 primary schools, three secondaries and one Assisted Support for Learning (ASL) schools have been inspected, with more scheduled before the end of June. Pupils at Hyndland Secondary (Image: Colin Mearns/Newsquest) Head of service (Education North) Jean Miller said the results represented a 'particularly strong' and 'extremely positive picture' across the city schools. Schools are inspected on four key areas: leadership of change; learning, teaching and assessment; ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion; and raising attainment and achievement. The percentage breakdown of the grades, considered from good and above, increased from 82% to 100% in leadership of change; from 85% to 93% in learning, teaching and assessment; from 88% to 100% in wellbeing, equality and inclusion; and from 79% to 93% in raising attainment and achievement, compared to session 2023/24. Pupils at Cleeves Primary and headteacher Hazel Sim (Image: Cleeves Primary) The Glasgow Times reported in February how Cleeves Primary on the Southside was the city's only school to achieve the top rating of 'excellent' in the wellbeing, equality and inclusion category. Hazel Sim, headteacher at Cleeves Primary, said she was delighted to speak to the committee about the inspection report, and added: 'I'm really proud our wee school in Pollok has achieved so much.' Primary seven pupils Zainab and Duha told the committee how initiatives like their Equalities Ambassadors and regular assemblies made their school a better place, and primary six pupil Summer said a playground scheme where older children buddied with younger pupils helped everyone 'learn how to play nicely together.' Hyndland Secondary hit the headlines in February when it become the first in Scotland in almost a decade to achieve an 'excellent' rating for learning, teaching and assessment. It was also graded 'excellent' in raising attainment and achievement. Fifth year pupil Yvie said: 'We're so grateful to our teachers for all the effort and time they put in to give us so many different opportunities, to make our high school experience enjoyable.' Fellow S5 pupil Naomi said she treasured the 'unique bond' between staff and pupils, and classmate Sufyan agreed. 'I appreciate the warm welcome we receive at Hyndland Secondary,' he said. 'Students are genuinely listened to – for example, my friend really enjoys ultimate frisbee and he told the teachers this, so now we have a team which competes in tournaments.' Headteacher Louise Edgerton told the committee it had been a 'whole team effort' and added: 'We know excellent doesn't mean perfect and we continue to work hard for our whole Hyndland community.'

Libya boat tragedy victims' bodies arrive

Bodies of two more Pakistani nationals, who died in a migrant boat capsizing off the eastern coast of Libya on the night between April 12 and 13, arrived at Lahore Airport on Sunday. The tragedy is the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent years, where hundreds of Pakistanis have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean while attempting to reach Europe via Africa. The victims were identified as Sufyan and Nadeem Ahmed, both residents of Gujranwala. State Minister for Public Affairs Rana Mubashir Hussain and Punjab Assembly Member Imran Javed received the bodies at the airport. The remains were later handed over to the grieving families. Prayers were also offered for the departed souls. Minister Hussain expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Meanwhile, the FIA, Gujranwala Zone, has launched at least three separate inquiries into the incident. The FIA launched a massive crackdown against human smugglers and traffickers after PM Shehbaz Sharif took notice of boat capsizing incidents near Greece in November last year in which illegal Pakistani immigrants were among the people who lost their lives.

Yemeni-American Man Killed While Trying to Stop Armed Robbery at Tennessee Store

A Yemeni-American man was fatally shot while attempting to prevent an armed robbery at the store where he worked in Tennessee, marking the fourth such attack against Yemeni expatriates in the U.S. this year. According to a statement from the Memphis Police Department, Sufyan Ahmed Hazam Al-Khader was killed Sunday evening during the incident on Mississippi Boulevard in Memphis, the largest city in Tennessee. Yemeni expatriates shared the news in a Monday Facebook post, mourning his death. Surveillance footage showed the suspect leaving the store with stolen goods before Sufyan confronted him. A struggle ensued, and the assailant opened fire, shooting the victim multiple times. This is the fourth deadly crime targeting Yemeni immigrants in the U.S. since the start of 2025, adding to a growing number of killings and attempted murders in recent years. Armed criminals have repeatedly targeted Yemeni-owned stores for robberies and violent thefts.

Local store steps up after water leak closes mosque during Ramadan

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — After the Islamic Center of East Lansing was forced to close its doors just days into , a local business owner stepped in to help. A water leak seeping onto nearby electrical equipment caused the mosque to lose power Wednesday, and the mosque has closed until further notice as crews work to fix the problem. However, Ehab Awad with Best Furniture learned about the news through social media and took action, opening the doors of the store in Waverly to Muslims as a safe space for them to pray during the holy month of Ramadan. 6 News spoke to many community members who say they are grateful for the alternative mosque. 'A lot of these people wouldn't have a place to go and worship, especially in this holy month. So, you know, we were very happy to hear that there is an alternative,' says Ahmed Sufyan. Without the temporary space, many of them would have prayed at home. 'Actually, I would've prayed at home. My dad is an advent Muslim. He loves to come every Friday, and I don't think he would've had it any other way,' says Vernita Payne. Sufyan and Payne were just two of the hundreds of Muslims who flocked to the store after the East Lansing mosque was forced to close. Sufyan says it is important for followers of Islam to do their prayers during the holy month. 'Part of it is to hear Friday's sermon, and you know, missing out on that would be unfortunate,' says Sufyan. At first, mosque leaders asked people to pray at home or at the Lansing mosque. However, after Awad learned about the situation online, he decided to take action. 'We know the importance of the holy month of Ramadan, right? We're talking about over 1,000 people who gather for prayer, right? So, we decided to go ahead and provide over 12,000 square footage, right? To continue to do what we do,' says Awad. As a practicing Muslim himself, Awad says he knew he had to do something—and his business always opens its doors for the community. 'That is there for our community without discriminating, and supporting all demographics,' says Awad. 'All community members.' Leaders of the Islamic Center of East Lansing say the mosque is closed until further notice, bu they will be handing out to-go boxes for Iftar at their alternative location.
