Bodies of two more Pakistani nationals, who died in a migrant boat capsizing off the eastern coast of Libya on the night between April 12 and 13, arrived at Lahore Airport on Sunday.
The tragedy is the latest in a series of similar incidents in recent years, where hundreds of Pakistanis have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean while attempting to reach Europe via Africa.
The victims were identified as Sufyan and Nadeem Ahmed, both residents of Gujranwala. State Minister for Public Affairs Rana Mubashir Hussain and Punjab Assembly Member Imran Javed received the bodies at the airport.
The remains were later handed over to the grieving families. Prayers were also offered for the departed souls.
Minister Hussain expressed deep sorrow and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Meanwhile, the FIA, Gujranwala Zone, has launched at least three separate inquiries into the incident.
The FIA launched a massive crackdown against human smugglers and traffickers after PM Shehbaz Sharif took notice of boat capsizing incidents near Greece in November last year in which illegal Pakistani immigrants were among the people who lost their lives.

Pakistan rejects Indian minister's remarks

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has categorically rejected the irresponsible remarks made by the external affairs minister (EAM) of India during different media engagements in Brussels. The discourse of top diplomats should aim to promote peace and harmony, rather than producing bellicose punch lines, Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan said in a statement on Wednesday. 'The tone and tenor of a foreign minister should be commensurate with his dignified status,' he added. For last several years, the spokesperson remarked 'India has been engaged in a malicious campaign to mislead the international community through a fictitious narrative of victim hood.' Pakistan rejects Modi's misleading remarks However, Ambassador Khan pointed out 'India's continued anti-Pakistan diatribe cannot hide its sponsorship of terrorism beyond its borders, nor can it cover up the state-sanctioned oppression in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Instead of pointing fingers at others, India should introspect on its own involvement in terrorism, subversion and targeted assassinations. 'India must also desist from concocting misleading narratives to justify its recent aggressive actions. Pakistan believes in peaceful coexistence, dialogue and diplomacy. However, it stands resolute in its intent and ability to safeguard its sovereignty against any aggression, as exemplified by its robust response to India's reckless strikes, last month.' The spokesperson elaborated narrative emerging from India betrays sheer frustration, following an unsuccessful military adventure against Pakistan. 'The Indian leaders would be well-advised to improve the standard of their discourse and discard their obsession with Pakistan,' he said, adding the history will judge not by who shouted the loudest — but by who acted the wisest. It is worth mentioning that during his recent visit to Brussels, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar issued a strong warning to Pakistan, stating India's preparedness to conduct strikes within Pakistani territory in response to terrorist provocations. 'We will go deep into Pakistan, India won't hold back now,' Jaishankar said this during his several meetings with EU leaders. He has also accused Pakistan of training 'thousands' of terrorists to deploy them across the border. The EAM's remarks came weeks after Pakistan's befitting response to India's naked aggression on May 7 and 10 respectively. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025

Pakistani who allegedly plotted US attack extradited from Canada

NEW YORK: A Pakistani man was extradited from Canada to the United States on Tuesday to face charges of plotting to carry out an attack on Jews in New York City, the Justice Department said. Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, 20, also known as Shahzeb Jadoon, was arrested in Canada in September. According to a criminal complaint, Khan planned to travel to New York and carry out a mass shooting in support of the Islamic State (IS) at a Jewish centre in Brooklyn on the October 7 anniversary of the deadly 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. 'He planned to use automatic weapons to kill as many members of our Jewish community as possible, all in support of IS,' US Attorney Jay Clayton said in a statement. Khan allegedly revealed his plans in conversations with conspirators who were actually undercover law enforcement officers, the Justice Department said. He was taken into custody by Canadian authorities in the municipality of Ormstown some 12 miles (19 kilometres) from the US-Canada border. Khan is charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization and attempting to commit acts of terrorism. He could face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

PM hails rising remittances and PSX boost

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday hailed a sharp rise in remittances and record gains in the country's stock market, describing them as signs of growing investor and public confidence in the government's economic policies. In a statement, the prime minister expressed satisfaction over a 13.7 percent increase in remittances for May 2025, compared to the same month last year. Pakistan received $3.7 billion in remittances during the month, contributing to a total of $34.9 billion for the current fiscal year – up 28.8 per cent from the previous year. 'The increase in remittances is evidence of the growing confidence of overseas Pakistanis in the government's economic policies,' he added. Sharif credited the government's economic strategy and the newly unveiled 'people-friendly' federal budget for 2025-26 as signs of a brighter future. He emphasised that the budget, presented a day earlier, introduced no new tax burden on the general public and included pay raises and tax cuts designed to ease pressure on the salaried class. Sharif also celebrated a record high in the Pakistan Stock Exchange, which surged to 124,000 points – a milestone he said reflected growing investor confidence. 'The journey to national economic progress has begun,' he remarked. 'The people of Pakistan have made immense sacrifices. Now, we all must work together to improve the life of the common man.' He paid tribute to his economic team, crediting them for reducing inflation, increasing foreign exchange reserves, boosting exports, and helping Pakistan avoid default. 'This historic economic turnaround, achieved through hard work and prioritising the national interest, will be remembered in history,' he said. Separately, a delegation from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) met with the prime minister to express full support for his initiatives aimed at economic development and public welfare. The delegation, led by Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain, praised the government for presenting what they called a balanced and forward-looking federal budget. They also commended the prime minister for his leadership during recent tensions with India and his efforts to raise Pakistan's profile on the global stage. Local development issues relating to their constituencies were also discussed during the meeting. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
