WASHINGTON — Shakira Austin had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Sug Sutton scored 13 points and the Washington Mystics beat the Seattle Storm 69-58 on Saturday night. Seattle, which endured a five-minute scoring drought to open the third quarter and trailed 60-45 entering the fourth, held Washington without a point for the first six minutes of the final quarter. The Storm's 11-0 run had them within 60-56 with four minutes remaining in the game.

Sug Sutton is on the money for the Mystics again in a win over the Storm
Sug Sutton insisted to her coaches early in the season that she is a good shooter. She just didn't have the confidence to back it up at the time. That certainly changed as the Washington Mystics' season has progressed. Sutton entered the weekend shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 42.4 percent from three-point range, both career highs — and she was at it again Saturday night against the Seattle Storm, posting 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting in a 69-58 win at CareFirst Arena. 'I think everybody's starting to see,' the 26-year-old said. With the win, the Mystics (12-12) broke a two-game skid, got back to .500 and improved to 2-0 against the expected championship contender. The Storm (15-11) has dropped two of three since the all-star break. Before the game, Seattle Coach Noelle Quinn lamented her team's inconsistency, and she saw it again Saturday night. The matchup featured three of the top four picks in this year's draft: Seattle's Dominique Malonga (No. 2) and Washington's Sonia Citron (No. 3) and Kiki Iriafen (No. 4). Citron bounced back from an underwhelming game during a loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Tuesday with aggression on both ends that equated to 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shakira Austin led the Mystics with 14 points to go with 11 rebounds. Iriafen had seven points and 11 rebounds; Malonga had eight points and nine rebounds off the bench for Seattle. Storm 10-time all-star Nneka Ogwumike seemed to be on a mission — particularly early, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and finishing with 18. The problem: She didn't get much help outside of Erica Wheeler's 12 points. The Mystics went into halftime with a 40-35 lead after using a 17-2 second-quarter run to erase an eight-point deficit. The Storm got sloppy with the ball and Citron kicked up the defensive aggression as Brittney Sykes and Sutton combined for 11 points in the stretch. The third quarter was more of the same: The Storm managed just 10 points, and Washington went ahead by 19 before entering the fourth with a 60-45 lead. The Storm opened the final quarter with an 11-0 run to get within four, but two crucial layups from Sykes (11 points, five assists, four rebounds) kept Seattle at bay. The Mystics were without Aaliyah Edwards, who suffered a right wrist injury this past week in practice. Coach Sydney Johnson said he wasn't sure when the injury happened, and the Mystics wanted her to test it pregame. Her absence left the Mystics with nine players; Georgia Amoore (ACL) is out for the season, and Sika Koné is playing for Mali at AfroBasket in the Ivory Coast.

Mystics overcome fourth-quarter drought to defeat Storm 69-58
WASHINGTON (AP) — Shakira Austin had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Sug Sutton scored 13 points and the Washington Mystics beat the Seattle Storm 69-58 on Saturday night. Seattle, which endured a five-minute scoring drought to open the third quarter and trailed 60-45 entering the fourth, held Washington without a point for the first six minutes of the final quarter. The Storm's 11-0 run had them within 60-56 with four minutes remaining in the game. Kiki Iriafen then made one free throw for Washington for a five-point lead and her layup with about 2 1/2 minutes left put the Mystics up 63-56. Brittney Sykes scored on two driving layups, leaving the Mystics in command 67-58 with 51 seconds remaining. The Mystics won by double digits despite scoring only nine points in the fourth quarter. They held the Storm under 15 points in each of the last three quarters. Nneka Ogwumike had 18 points, all in the first half for Seattle (15-11). Erica Wheeler scored 12 points.
