Pre-Sukma silat tourney ends in Miri
An intense battle during the finals. MIRI (July 29): The Pencak Silat Pra-Sukma Tournament held at Petronas Sports Village here drew to a close on Sunday morning. A total of 150 athletes, coaches and technical officials from Marudi, Sibuti, Niah and Miri were involved. The event, which was organised by Rumpun Silat Sarawak Wilayah Miri (RSSWM), served both as a platform to prepare for the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) and to strengthen ties between silat communities in the northern zone. Speaking at the closing ceremony, Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin commended organisers and participants for their commitment to silat and youth development. 'This tournament is not only a platform for selecting athletes to represent the state but also one that nurtures discipline, identity and fighting spirit among our youth,' he said. He also noted the encouraging participation of athletes from various ethnic backgrounds. 'This is a very good development. We want to see more of our youth participate, regardless of race or background,' he remarked. Meanwhile, RSSWM secretary Mohd Azahar Bujang reiterated that the tournament was not only a form of early preparation for the state silat contingent but also an opportunity to assess the progress of athletes, coaches and referees. 'This competition is very valuable in helping us see where we stand and where we can improve. It also serves to motivate our athletes to push themselves further,' he said. 'This kind of exposure will help both our athletes and coaches to better understand the level of competition expected at Sukma,' he added. Lee also announced a RM10,000 allocation to RSSWM to support future silat development in the region. Pencak Silat Pra-Sukma Tournament

Malaysian wushu exponent Kwan Yong Xin PETALING JAYA: Kwan Yong Xin is staking a strong claim to get onto the Youth Olympics stage after pulling off the biggest win of her young career. The 17-year-old delivered a pleasant surprise by winning gold for Malaysia in the Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Jiangyin, China, yesterday. Yong Xin danced her way to the gold with 9.426 points in the girls' 16-18 taijijian (taiji sword) event. Singapore and Vietnam took silver (9.333) and bronze (9.316) respectively. Yong Xin had narrowly missed gold in the taijiquan event the day before, scoring 9.356 to settle for silver behind China's winner (9.420). She was delighted to achieve this milestone ahead of wushu's highly anticipated debut as a medal sport at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal. Sabah Golf Association proud of junior golfers
Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: GL Oh Text Size: Hon (third left) and Bunsu (centre) with (from left) Rafiq, Ryan, Jamie, Dynneva and Shannon after the presentation. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Golf Association (SGA) will build on the State players' recent success at the Malaysian School Sports Council (MSSM) golf tournament in their preparation for the Malaysian Games (Sukma) next year. Its president Nash Hon said this on Thursday at the appreciation reception hosted by the State body at Sabah Golf and Country Club for the Under-18 boy and girl teams, who both emerged as runners-up in the tournament held in May. The boys' total score of 691 saw them finishing seven strokes behind champions Selangor, while the girls who managed 733, also came in second behind Selangor who had a 693. Mohamad Rafiq Anugerah Ali was the toast in the men's team with Ryan Lam Tse Ziang and Muhammad Arif Izwan Nordin. He almost made it to the podium in the individual event as he led the pack on day one with an impressive 70 and was joint lead the following day with 73 before faltering on the final round with 76 to finish fourth. Jamie Tan Huan Ying, who led the charge for the girls with Dynneva Joyce Donni and Shannon Sim Xuan also missed the individual medal by finishing fourth with her scores of 74-80-76. 'We are proud of our players and confident in our chances of clinching the MSSM title next year. SGA remains fully committed to supporting JPN (State Education Department) in the development of junior golfers, as MSSM serves as a vital stepping stone for our Sukma selection. 'We are confident in the potential of our young talents, and their MSSM performance is a clear indication of their readiness for Sukma next year. We must begin early to identify and nurture our medal prospects,' he said. He also revealed that SGA is currently in talks with the Sarawak Golf Association to revive the SGA Cup Golf Championship, which has been on hiatus for nearly a decade. 'The event is tentatively scheduled for early 2026, with several slots reserved for selected Sukma players as part of their early preparations.' He added that funding will be a major challenge for them as the selected Sukma players will have to train and acclimate to the golf courses in Kuala Lumpur. 'Unlike other sports, every golf course is different—it takes time to 'marry' the course. Unfortunately, this preparation comes at a significant cost, but I can assure that SGA will continue to advocate for our athletes, and our focus remains on ensuring Sabah's junior golfers are well-equipped and competitive on the national stage,' he added. Meanwhile, at the reception, apart from incentives awarded to all the team members except Mohd Arif, who was absent, special recognition was also given to Mohamad Rafiq Anugerah, Ryan Lam, and Jamie Tan for their outstanding performances in the Individual categories. Hon said the incentives were aimed to encourage continued dedication and improvement among the players. Also present at the reception was district education department officer Bunsu Gaga, who was also the deputy head of contingent for the state school sports council golf team. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Haze unlikely to affect Borneo Games 2025, says Abd Karim
Abdul Karim speaking to reporters after the launch of the Air Supply 50th Anniversary Celebration concert. – Photo by Henrietta Liza KUCHING (July 25): The current haze situation affecting Kuching is expected to be temporary and unlikely to disrupt the upcoming Borneo Games 2025 set for September, said State Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. He said the haze was mainly caused by fires in Indonesia's Riau Archipelago, with the smoke drifting into Sarawak due to the shifting wind directions, particularly affecting the Kuching area. 'Now, because of the change in the wind, the direct flight is moving to Kuching, but the Riau Archipelago is not that big. 'Once they manage to control the fires, I believe we won't be seeing this kind of smoke or the effects that we are seeing today. 'So by the time the Borneo Games are going to be held, which is in September, same time as the Air Supply (concert), I think by that time it should be okay,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the 'Air Supply 50th Anniversary Concert' at The Spring Mall here today. When asked whether there are contingency plans to postpone the event should the haze persist, Abdul Karim said the organisers had been monitoring the situation closely but no postponement had been planned at this time. 'If the situation remains moderate and manageable, we certainly hope the championship can proceed without issue. 'As I mentioned earlier, it's very likely that when the students arrive during that period, the API (Air Pollutant Index) will still be within an acceptable range,' he said. On preparations for the Games, the state minister gave assurance that Sarawak was fully ready, noting that the state successfully hosted the Malaysia Games (Sukma) in August last year, and had the experience and capability to manage such events. 'With only five core sports and two traditional events in the Borneo Games, compared to over 30 in Sukma, this is relatively easy for us,' he said. He added that the organising committee, Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), volunteer teams, and officials from his ministry were already mobilised and committed to ensuring a successful event. As for the state's athletes, Abdul Karim said preparations are going well. He stressed that while medals are important, the true objective of the Borneo Games is to foster stronger ties and camaraderie among the provinces and states across Borneo. 'That's why we don't just focus on podium finishes – we look at how to create meaningful bonds through the games,' he added. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Borneo Games 2025 haze
