Czech midfielder Pavel Sulc joins Lyon in €7.5m transfer deal

CZECH attacking midfielder Pavel Sulc has completed his move to French club Lyon, signing a four-year contract until 2029. The transfer from Viktoria Plzen is valued at €7.5 million, with additional performance-based bonuses of €2.5 million. Rangers UCL opponents Viktoria Plzen set to lose star player as multi-million pound man's absence ‘a huge loss'

The attacking midfielder was last night finalising an expected £7.5 million switch to French giants Olympique Lyon. He failed to travel to Scotland and gutted Koubek said: "It's definitely going to affect us. "We have to work without Sulc and that's a big loss. "He's been absolutely amazing for us for the last three years in attack. "We have to deal with it and sort it out as a team. "What's important now is the strength of motivation for other players who in the past haven't played because he was on the pitch. "I'm hoping these other players will now have a chance to show their potential." Like the whole of Scottish football, Koubek couldn't help but pick up on Russell Martin's blast at his players on Saturday evening after Gers' disappointing display at Fir Park. Experienced boss Koubek, 73, believes the Light Blues gaffer was simply firing up his troops for tonight's Champions League duel. Koubek said: "I noticed some things in the media. Players are running the Rangers dressing room - Martin knows EXACTLY what he's doing "However, they have beaten Panathinaikos in the previous round, which is a really great success. "OK, they didn't have that success in their first league game. "But I wonder if the coach did it in a cunning way to motivate the players more for this match against us." Now in his third stint as Plzen boss, Koubek admits it will be a special moment in his lengthy coaching career to lead a side out at Ibrox. And while they have the same failsafe that Gers have of guaranteed Europa League football, the former Sparta Prague goalkeeper is still aiming for the Champions League proper. Koubek said: "I'm 74 years old soon and in my whole career I was looking up to teams like Glasgow Rangers. "I have seen them on TV and witnessed the atmosphere at Ibrox. "I never imagined I would lead a club like Viktoria Plzen, which I respect so much, against a team like Glasgow Rangers. "Yes, we have a certain guarantee now in terms of the Europa League. "But we have to be ambitious and the goal of every sportsman is to reach the highest level." Plzen skipper Lukas Hejda admits it will be strange to take to the field without talisman Sulc to drive the team forward. Like his gaffer Koulec, the 35-year-old stopper is determined to reach the latter stages of the competition. Hejda said: "I don't know how it's going to be without Sulc. "He has played in 90 percent of our games in the last three years, so it's difficult to know how different it will be. 3 "I would say it's easier now we know we have a Europa League spot guaranteed. "But as a team we want to fight for the opportunity to go to the Champions League. "That is our aim and we are here to get the best result we can." Hejda has already tasted football on Scottish soil after helping Plzen see off Hearts at Tynecastle in their Europa League play-off last season. The Czech international is hoping for a similar result tonight but thinks his pals face a much sterner task at Ibrox. Hejda said: "We have one win from Scotland already and we would definitely like to add a second one! "However, we can't compare the matches because the teams are very different. "The 3-1 win against Servette in the last round was a great result for us away from home. "But we can't expect anything like that here, because Rangers have different qualities." Plzen 'agree' €10m deal to sell key man before Rangers clash

The Ibrox club will take on the Czech giants in the third round of Champions League qualifying. The first leg takes place at [[Ibrox]] on Tuesday. Read more: Going into the game, Plzen have agreed to sell Sulc to French side Lyon, reports Fabrizio Romano. The deal could be worth up to €10m once add-ons are included. 🚨🔴🔵 Olympique Lyon agree deal to sign Pawel Sulc from Viktoria Plzen, all done. The midfielder will cost €7.5m plus add-ons up to €10m package, all agreed also on player side. OL beat an Italian club to the signing, now medical next - follows @hugoguillemet. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 1, 2025 Last season, Sulc scored 20 goals and assisted 15 for his side in all competitions. In the campaign prior to that, he registered 28 goal contributions. The 24-year-old has started this term strongly, too, scoring once and setting up a further three goals in his first four games in the Czech top flight. He won't feature against Rangers next week, though, as he is set to move to France. Plzen captain Matej Vydra reckons the pressure is all on Rangers ahead of the European showdown. He said: "We'll go there to Rangers and give it a go against them for sure. "It's really great that we're already assured of the Europa League now and we don't have to think about what will happen if we get knocked out. "We know that the certainty of the group stages is in our hands and we can be a little more relaxed because the pressure is off. "That could help us. "I'm incredibly proud of this team "We were down twice against Servette - after losing the first leg and then going 1-0 down in Switzerland, so to recover from that shows what we can do. "The joy in the dressing room after the match was unbelievable, I've probably never experienced anything like it here."

Bournemouth and Middlesbrough tracking Czech starlet with 35 goal involvements

Bournemouth and Middlesbrough have both made transfer checks on highly-rated Viktoria Plzen playmaker Pavel Sulc Bournemouth and Championship side Middlesbrough are among a list of clubs to have made initial enquiries for Viktoria Plzen attacking midfielder Pavel Sulc. The 24-year-old Czechia international is set to leave his current employers this summer after hitting 20 goals and registering 15 assists in 54 appearances in all competitions last season. Plzen are yet to receive any formal offers for Sulc to date but his representatives have been fielding calls over his availability and there have been requests to gauge the numbers involved in a potential transfer deal. ‌ Crucially, Sulc is now into the final year of his contract and Plzen are now anticipating a sale before the conclusion of the summer window. ‌ Andoni Iraola's Cherries and Boro, who recently appointed former Luton boss Rob Edwards, are among the clubs monitoring the player and they're not alone, as other unnamed English sides are also believed to be in the fray. There is also vast interest from Italy - namely from Lazio - Germany and Turkey, however, at this stage no deal is close and the race for Sulc's services remains well and truly open. Bournemouth are thought to be prioritising defensive reinforcements after raising £90million following the sales of Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to Real Madrid and Liverpool, respectively, but they're also keen to bolster their attacking options. Lille centre-back Bafode Diakite remains a primary target at the back but Lazio's Mario Gila and Bournemouth's Joel Ordonez have also been shortlisted. Sulc is a No.10 but he can also operate in a deeper midfield role and additionally, he possesses the skillset to play in other positions across the frontline. ‌ He was named the Czech First League's Player of the Season and Best Midfielder last term after firing 11 goals and also notching eight assists as Plzen finished runners up to Slavia Prague. Sulc, who has won 12 caps for his country, recently travelled to Westendorf, Austria for Plzen's pre-season training camp as they gear up for their Champions League second-round qualifying clash against Swiss outfit Servette later this month. By all accounts, Plzen do not expect him to be part of their squad for the forthcoming season as they're cautious he will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from January 1, 2026.
