No compromise if rules broken at ‘Justice for Zara' rally, say cops
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said failure to comply with police instructions during the gathering will result in immediate action. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police will facilitate tonight's 'Justice for Zara' solidarity gathering outside the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur, but participants have been warned against breaking the law. Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus told those intending to take part not to 'take chances and commit acts outside the law'. 'We will accommodate and make things easier (for the participants). However, failure to comply with instructions will result in immediate action, and there is no compromise,' he said. Dang Wangi police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said 40 police personnel will be deployed to monitor the rally. He said the officers will be stationed along the route to ensure the safety of both the participants and the public. 'For now, there will be no road closures or diversions around the Sogo area, but this will depend on the situation,' he said. Last week, hundreds of Sabahans gathered in several towns to demand justice for the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir. A livestream on Sandakan MP Vivian Wong's TikTok account showed a crowd outside Harbour Mall in her constituency, chanting 'justice for Zara' and 'murderer'. Similar gatherings were held in Lahad Datu and Tawau, with more rallies in solidarity with Zara planned in other locations in the coming days. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after she allegedly fell from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at the Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the next day. On Wednesday, Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar said the officer in charge of investigating Zara's death failed to follow proper procedure by not requesting a post-mortem. He said Zara's death occurred under suspicious circumstances, in which a post-mortem was warranted. Earlier, Zara's body was exhumed, under orders from the Attorney-General's Chambers, for a post-mortem to be carried out.

About 5,000 expected at 'Malaysia Bangkit untuk Gaza' rally tomorrow at Dataran Merdeka
KUALA LUMPUR: Around 5,000 participants are expected to take part in the Palestine solidarity rally, "Malaysia Bangkit untuk Gaza," scheduled for tomorrow at Dataran Merdeka. Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman said participants, comprising non-governmental organisations (NGOs), students, and the public, will gather at three main locations before proceeding to Dataran Merdeka. "The participants will gather at three main locations, namely, Masjid Negara, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, and Kompleks Sogo, before marching to Dataran Merdeka. "We anticipate traffic congestion heading towards the city centre due to the increased number of rally participants entering the area. "However, traffic control monitoring will be implemented to ensure the smooth movement of the public," he said in a statement today. He advised organisers and participants to comply with all regulations and laws during the assembly, in line with the constitutional right to peaceful assembly. Sulizmie Affendy said several actions are prohibited during the rally, including carrying sharp objects and dangerous weapons, as well as bringing or setting off firecrackers, fireworks, smoke bombs, or flares. "They are also prohibited from carrying or displaying placards containing elements of race, religion, or royalty (3R), making defamatory speeches, bringing children, causing riots, or disobeying authorities. "In addition, drone flying is banned in the assembly area as it may endanger the public and property," he said. He urged the public to cooperate with officers on duty and warned that strict action would be taken against individuals or groups causing disorder, riots, or extreme provocation. He said police are committed to ensuring safety around Kuala Lumpur while ensuring that daily activities and the economy are not disrupted. Earlier, Humanity for Gaza (H4G) said it would be organising the rally to voice the sentiments of Malaysians regarding the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime in Gaza. Its chairman Datuk Wan Mohamad Datuk Sheikh Abdul Aziz said the rally will present several demands as a clear message from Malaysians to the world.

Five magic gang suspects arrested for tricking tourists in KL
KUALA LUMPUR: Police have detained five foreigners suspected of being part of a 'magic gang' involved in stealing money from tourists using deceptive hand tricks in the city centre. Dang Wangi district police chief ACP Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects, all from Middle Eastern countries, were apprehended in separate raids on July 22 and 24. 'In the first raid, three men and a woman aged 20 to 50 were arrested near Jalan Sultan Ismail. 'Authorities seized foreign currencies from Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia worth over RM16,000,' he said. The second operation on Jalan Bukit Bintang led to the arrest of a foreign man in his 20s, with more than RM360 in cash confiscated. Sulizmie Affendy explained the group's method: 'They would feign interest in seeing the victim's currency, then use sleight of hand to steal some of the money while returning the rest unnoticed.' The suspects from the first raid were initially remanded for four days under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, followed by a 14-day extension under the Immigration Act. The second suspect faced similar remand procedures. Investigations revealed the suspects had been in Malaysia since September 2024, entering via Bukit Kayu Hitam but later losing their passports. The case is being probed under Section 379 of the Penal Code. Sulizmie Affendy added that over 50 police reports had been filed regarding such scams since last year, with authorities committed to ensuring tourist safety in Kuala Lumpur. – Bernama
