Sultan Bin Ahmed commends UoS for earning ‘Platinum Rating'

Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah (UoS), affirmed the continued support, advancement, and global presence of the university among its prestigious peers in various academic, scientific, and other fields. This, he noted, contributes to the university's progress and solidifies its standing as one of the leading institutions of higher education both within and beyond the UAE. This came on the occasion of the UoS becoming the first university in the Middle East to achieve Platinum Rating under the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) administered by AASHE. The university received a full 100% score in the category of sustainable education and research, reflecting its strong commitment to sustainability across operations and planning, as well as its role in preparing a generation conscious of sustainable practices. This achievement aligns with the UAE's and Sharjah's strategic agendas on sustainability and carbon neutrality through education, research, innovation, and sustainable management and planning. The UoS now joins an elite group of only 15 universities worldwide to have received this top-tier Platinum rating – including 8 universities from the United States, 6 from Canada, and now 1 from the Middle East. His Highness congratulated the Board of Trustees, university leadership, academic, administrative, and technical staff, as well as students, on this new milestone, which adds to the university's impressive record of accomplishments over the years. These successes are the result of a well-defined strategy, vision, and the concerted efforts of the UoS community in providing every possible support to students, who remain at the heart of the university's educational mission. H.H. emphasised the university's commitment to offering students the best possible experiences by continuously enhancing the academic and research environment – from curriculum development, research opportunities, student activities, and innovation support, to the quality of faculty and staff. This is all done through the lens of sustainability in higher education, a global trend that is reshaping the future of universities and colleges. As such, the UOS continues to advance in global rankings across a range of academic and scientific fields. The University's award came following its assessment under the STARS rating programme, a transparent and comprehensive system for measuring and tracking sustainability performance in higher education institutions worldwide. The programme encourages institutions to pursue long-term sustainability goals, fosters continuous improvement, and builds more diverse and high-performing university communities committed to excellence in education. The UoS joined the STARS programme in 2021, earning the Silver rating in its first year, then becoming the first Arab university to receive a Gold rating in 2022, and now achieving the Platinum rating, the highest possible level – a clear affirmation of the university's leadership in sustainability.

The key provisions include: 1. A medical report must be submitted from an authorised medical body. 2. The care leave will last one year with full pay after maternity leave ends. 3. The leave may be extended annually for up to three years with the relevant authority's approval and a supporting medical report. 4. Should the child's health improve, the authority may terminate the leave based on medical recommendations. 5. Employee performance during care leave will be evaluated under the existing performance management framework. 6. If the leave exceeds three years, the case will be referred to the Higher Committee for Human Resources. 7. The care leave will be counted as part of the employee's total service. The council also issued a resolution regarding the executive regulations of Law No. (2) of 2021 concerning human resources for military personnel in Sharjah's regulatory bodies. The regulation includes comprehensive legal articles on terminology, application frameworks, job classification, recruitment, salary structures, allowances, promotions, and other employment benefits. It further outlines mechanisms related to internal transfers, secondments, training, educational leave, performance appraisals, job responsibilities and restrictions, end-of-service processes, and associated benefits, along with relevant annexes and templates. The council reviewed a detailed report on the performance of district councils and plans for expansion across cities within the emirate. Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed discussed the steps to achieve these goals through employee satisfaction and customer happiness, emphasising the need for best practices to be showcased to others, which creates a solid and transparent governance system. He pointed out that there was a request to increase the number of categories for the next edition of the award and announce them. However, he preferred to postpone this until the results and contributions of the first edition could be studied in depth. The Deputy Ruler of Sharjah insisted that the selection of winners in all award categories should remain with the judges and that no new category for special recognition should be added, which he personally selects for entities with outstanding practices. This was to confirm the award's transparency, integrity, and fairness, affirming that entities can improve their performance and compete for the award categories. The Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and the attendees watched a visual presentation titled 'Excellence is a Decision, a Renewed Vision, and an Ambition that Races Against Time,' which addressed the goals of the award and highlighted its key figures, the participation of institutions, and the efforts of the teams that tirelessly strived to showcase the excellence of the participating entities. The award had conducted six training workshops attended by over 300 individuals, providing knowledge and establishing a path focused on continuous development, along with eight awareness publications that promoted a culture of excellence. A survey targeting customer happiness was participated in by over 55,000 customers, in addition to a survey for employees that included more than 5,000 workers and over 530 evaluations for secret shoppers of service channels. The material also discussed the launch of the 'Tamayuz' platform, which facilitates participants in submitting their files clearly and transparently, with over a thousand documents uploaded to the platform and 500 reports for secret shoppers, managed by eight excellence teams consisting of 33 members.
